Homepage Domain not Ranking, only subpages is?
-
What do you think can be causing issues that my main homepage is not showing on search results for the main search terms, only my sub-pages are showing up like the reservations page.
ps. I did not get a manual penalty action email.
Thanks,

Thanks guys, I have fixed the problem. and got the Root Domain back on the search results. The issue was over optimization and unnatural anchor text link profile.
We really appreciate the community for all the response.

Hi there,
You have two good answers here already from Andy and Dennis. If possible, could you provide examples of the site and the terms for which the internal pages are ranking? Feel free to PM them to me if you would rather they not appear on the thread. This should help me look at whether the internal pages are just more relevant to the queries, or whether it's truly strange that the home page doesn't rank.
Cheers,
Jane

Like Andy said, it's hard to really say without seeing it.
From my experience, it's usually just one of these:
1. The sub page is more relevant since your internal linking structure dictates that it is relevant to that keyword (plus your brand authority helps that page, even without links)
2. Something went wrong somewhere, in HTML problems, redirects and of course, overoptimised links (like a lot of domains with blogrolls pointing to the homepage) innocent looking links but they sometimes cause problems.

Thanks for the Respond,
The Root Domain/ Homepage was ranking for the the main search term until Feb 9th, then after that the Sub Page was only ranking for the same search term.
1. There is no duplicate titles or pages.
2. The Homepage is indexed, as it still ranking for other search terms, and I also search in google site:www.mysite.com
and still there.
3. There are no canonical issues. everything is Redirect to the Https, and the Https was ranking as for couple months until Feb 9,
4. No duplicated through index.html, default.html
5. 70% of the links are point to the Homepage.
6. Our Anchor Text distribution has only branded keywords, city name and the website, there is no commercial keywords. Thanks

There are so many possibilities for this.
Is the content on your sub pages, better matched to the search terms? Does the homepage say more about what you do in a generic way, or is it very targeted?
Do you have duplicate page Titles, or ones that are very similar? This can lead to keyword duplication (cannibalisation).
Is the homepage indexed by Google? It isn't excluded through the Robots file? Are there good links leading through to the sub pages, but the homepage is missing out?
Are there any canonical issues, or does your homepage get duplicated through index.html, default.html, etc.?
Sorry if these are vague, but there really are so many possibilities, it would be hard to guess without seeing it.

I want to shift my website to a new domain name, with my brand name. Would Lose rankings
hi, Currently i have a 18 year old domain name "www.jaipurdentists.com". I wish to shift to a new domain name "www.thaperdental.com". primarily because of two reasons: 1. I have a same name competitor with domain "www.thaperdentalclinic.com", the site gets benefited because of the brand name domain. 2. The new domain name "www.thaperdental.com" is better to remember and pronounce. Even if I redirect all web-pages, properly to the corresponding web-pages on new site. Should I go ahead with this? will it result in drop in rankings!

Domain vs Sub Domain and Rankings
Hi All Wanting some advice. I have a client which has a number of individual centres that are part of an umbrella organisation. Each individual centre has its own web site and some of these sites have similar (not duplicate content) products and services. Currently the individual centres are sub domains of the umbrella organisation. i.e. Umbrella organisation www.organisation.org.au Individual centres are sub domains i.e. www.centre1.organisation.org.au, www.centre2.organisation.org.au etc. I'm feeling that perhaps this setup might be affecting the rankings of the individual sites because they are sub domains. Would love to hear some thoughts or experience on this and whether its worth going through the process of migrating the individual centre domains. Thanks Ian

Ranking not improving
Our site is now 3 months old (although the domain is older) but rankings don't seem to be improving at all. We've got some good quality relevant links coming into the site, and the content is unique and often updated. Is there something holding the site back? Am I being impatient? the site is www.help-my-mobility.org Thanks.

Redirect non www. domain to WWW. domain for established website?
Hey guys, The website in question has been online for more than 5 years but there are still 2 versions of the website. Both versions are indexed by Google and of course, this will result in duplicate content. Is it necessary to redirect the non-www domain to the www. domain. What are the cons and advantages? Will the www. links replace the non-www links when it comes to keyword rankings? Thanks.

Optimizing the homepage : should I have a h1 or not?
Hi everyone, I am launching a debate that may seem a bit basic for the most experienced of you 😉 In fact, after completing internships in two different agencies, I had quite opposite views of the optimization process for the homepage: View 1: The home page should be optimized on a keyword and should definitely have a h1. View 2: The home page is a branded page and should not necessarily have an h1 (unlike other pages). Bonus question: assuming that the view 1 is the right one, is it a good idea to put a h1 on the logo (only for the homepage) ? Thank you very much for your help

Domain redirect
Recently we launched a site under a new domain, the site is doing well under the URL. Client calls me today and would like to have another domain he owns point to the new site. The domain he has has no history and no content. He is under the impression that people are looking for him by typing in www.domainxyz.com. I attempted to explain otherwise to him, but I lost. Question, what are the drawbacks of taking this domin and doing a perm redirect via . Httpaccess file?

How can I use a keyword based domain to rank for my existing site?
Hi everyone, From my understanding if your keywords are in your domain name it can help you rank for the keyword. My site www.pixelchefs.com was affected from the latest Google Algorithm changes, as I used my main site as a testing ground for all my back linking. Our site was a single page with Jquery slide, late February the same time with the Google algo changes we uploaded our new site, larger site with lots of pages and info. Result of that was that home page has PR3 and all other pages PR0. Well I don't really depend on Google for any work as most of my work comes from referrals.......but While searching for names for my private page I came across the domain name www.DesignOrlando.com, The specific keyword gets 22,210 view per month according to Google analytics and also contains part of the keyword for all the keywords I am after. I want to use the domain name for my main site but i am not sure what is the best way to forward the domain so Google can start reading my site as DesignOrlando.com Any Suggestions will be very appreciated.

Homepage/Root domain de-indexed by Google
This morning I discovered that the homepage/root domain of our company site, http://www.collegeplus.org/, has been de-indexed by Google and Bing. Out IT dept. is claiming it's our fault because we changed the meta title on our homepage. But they will not give me access to GWT to see if there's any issues. I believe the issue lies within our robots.txt file - http://www.collegeplus.org/robots.txt I also don't believe we're suffering a penalty because all of our tier 2 pages are still indexed when any type of branded search is performed. We don't do things that can get a site de-indexed like this. Any ideas on what the issue may be? Or at least something to convince our IT dept. that simply changing a meta title won't get your homepage totally de-indexed? Thanks.
