Are footer links important?
-
We currently display a list of links in the footer of our site to help boost SEO. They were put in place years ago and in a recent discuss with our UX team they requested we remove them from the site. Do footer links have any value? Or is this an old dated practice that no longer works? If we remove the footer links should we expect to see if have an impact on our SEO traffic?
-
Michael, Philip is on the dot mass footer linking was an SEO trick of the past that does not benefit much in terms of an SEO boost. If its messy clean it up. Leave it ONLY if it makes sense from a user experience, and so optimize for a real human person as he would browsing the lower part of your site.
Hope this helps

Are the footer links internal links to other pages on your own site, or external links to other websites in your network? If they're internal, there's nothing wrong it. If they're external, you are basically passing almost no value to those other sites. They may even potentially be seen as spammy links.
- Do footer links have any value? Very little value. It's best to avoid trying to get a bunch of footer links.
- Is this an old dated practice that no longer works? Correct. Footer links is an old and dated practice.
- If we remove the footer links should we expect to see if have an impact on our SEO traffic? You shouldn't expect a drop in SEO traffic from getting rid of a footer link.

Links from a penalised site.
Hey Mozzers, Recently we have had a series of agencies in to pitch for work, one group mentioned that due to our association with a possibly penalised product review website, any links and activity associated with the brand would hinder our SEO. We currently have a good rating, but we are now no longer pushing our customers to the site as we move to a new platform. The current link back from this website is also no-followed. Any thoughts on how this could impact us? And how the agencies determined the site was penalised and causing us problems. Cheers Tim

Viewing search results for 'We possibly have internal links that link to 404 pages. What is the most efficient way to check our sites internal links?
We possibly have internal links on our site that point to 404 pages as well as links that point to old pages. I need to tidy this up as efficiently as possible and would like some advice on the best way to go about this.

14,000 links from affiliate
I have an active affiliate program and notice that webmaster tools is showing a huge number of links from one particular affiliate. The affiliate is called productwiki.co.uk and they are showing 14,413 links all pointing to my homepage in WMT. They don't seem to be no follow. What should I do about this? Is this a problem? I have had major issues with my organic traffic dropping right off. I appreciate any feedback

External links from banned websites
Currently working with a client that has seen his rankings diminish after the penguin update. I've manually analyzed all his 600 backlinks and identified approximately 85 external links from websites that have been banned by Google. How do these sites affect his current rankings? Should i just disavow all these links using the Google disavow tool? Any comments would be highly appreciated!

Should I link my similar sites together?
Hi I currently have two sites within exactly the same market. I've just purchased a third website from someone. Should I link these sites together? (i.e. in the page header should I cross link them or point two of them to the third?) If I do this will it harm them if they are on the same C-Class IP blocks? Is using private domains and different hosting companies considered dodgey in any way? Basically I'm a big wimp and don't want to do anything potentially that might potentially hurt my rankings;)

Client participated in Link farm.
Our client participated in link exchange activity between 2008-2009. The service they used was http://link2me.com/ Its an obvious link farm scheme and their drop in traffic/rankings correlates to panda release early this year. The site does have tons of unique content, their are no technical SEO issues. They DO have great inbound links from some very authoritative sites (ie: peta.org) They do not rank even for unique strings taken directly from their content. Rankings for some very n long tail terms are virtually non existant. So the question were trying to figure out is, did the domain get hit with a penalty bc of past link farm participation, if so how can we correct? -- killing the account with link2me has already been done Could the domain NOT be penalized, and since all those external links were penalized did our site lose authority?
