Domaim.com/jobs?location=10 is indexed, so is domain.com/jobs/sheffield
-
Whats the best way you'd tackle that problem? I'm inheriting a website and the old devs had multiple internal links pointing to domain.com/jobs?location=10 (plus a ton of other numbers assigned to locations) and so they've been indexed.
I usually use WMTs parameter tool but I'm not sure what the best approach would be other than that.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi,
To echo the comments above: you need to fix this by either:
-
Using the canonical tag on domain.com/jobs?location=10, pointing to domain.com/jobs/sheffield, or;
-
301 redirect domain.com/jobs?location=10 to domains.com/jobs/sheffield
(... and repeat with all the other instances where this has happened.)
The first method means that both pages will remain live, but Google will de-index the /jobs?location=10 page and credit the /jobs/sheffield/ page with a sizeable amount of that page's authority. The second method means that /jobs?location=10 will be inaccessible and will fall out of Google's index, to be replaced by /jobs/sheffield/. The /jobs/sheffield/ page will retain a sizeable amount of the other page's authority with this method as well.

Best idea is to fix the links so that they point to the correct url, then 301 the unwanted url to the good url.
If you simply use a 301 or a canonical you will be losing link juice on the redirect

Hi,
Well it all depends on your needs; here is a quick breakdown:
1. if you want these pages (domain.com/jobs?location=10) to remain accessible, but not crawlable, you can just use the rel cannonical in header (for those specific pages only) and point it to: domain.com/
----> you will lose some linkc juice here
2. if you dont need those pages to be accessible anymore, just redirect them (301 rediects) using header locations php code (no htaccess as it's a little tricky to do with rls with partameters)
----> You will preserve 90% of link juice here.
Hope it helps

Indexing is live what about rankings ?
I noticed that when I request indexing in the webmaster tool my new content is live within minutes. Does it take longer to update the ranking or is the ranking updated as soon as the new page has been indexed. Thank you,

Is there a benefit to changing .com domain to .edu?
Hey All! I'm wondering if there is any benefit (or if benefit could possibly outweigh the cost) to changing a domain from .com to a new .edu domain. The current .com domain has decent credibility already, and the .edu will have never been used before.

Staging/Development Site Indexed?
So, my company's site has been pretty tough to try to get moving in the right direction on Google's SERPs. I had believed that it was mainly due to having a shortage of back links and a horrible home page load time. Everything else seems to be set up pretty well. I was messing around and used the site: Google search operator for our staging site. I found stage.site.com and a lot of our other staging pages in the search results. I have to think that this is the problem and causing a duplicate content penalty of the entire site. I guess I now need to 301 redirect the entire site? Has anyone every had this issue before and have fixed it? Thanks for any help.

Top-10 ranked site dropping in/out of Google index?
I work for a company that makes an important product in a category. The company has a website (www.company.org); the product is at www.company.org/product. We recently (early May) redesigned and rearchitected the product site for SEO purposes. The company site talks about the category a bit (imagine the Colgate site; it talks about "toothpaste" a bit). The blog (blog.company.org/product) also talks about the category quite a bit (and links to the company site of course). The product is a major product in the category, among the top 3. The site and blog have been around for 15+ years. The site has appx. a billion backlinks, most branded links to the product. It's in the top 50 highest ranked sites among all sites on the internet in the ahrefs rank index. Imagine you are searching for our product category, "category". If you search for "category" in Bing today, my company's site is the 3rd result, and it's the 1st result from a company that makes a product in this category. If you search for "category" in Google today, our site is not in the top 150 results. In fact, the site keeps dropping out of Google's index. (See attached for what that looks like in the search console.) What might cause a site to jump from "ranked in top 10" to "not ranked" in Google -- back and forth every couple of days? Penalties? Our recent (early May) site rearchitecture? We're not making giant, index-shifting changes every day. wE0Bn

Domain Authority
Hi I wanted to find out if anyone knew how to discover why DA may have dropped? Ours has gone from 26 to 25 - I know it's not much, but I wanted to find the reason. One thing which happened was our developer company wiped redirects, which did impact rankings - would this also have affected domain authority or do I need to review our backlinks again? Thank you

Merging Domains
Up until last week, we had separate domains for each of our 3 products. We've now merged two products to sit under one URL. The merge coincided with a CMS upgrade which effectively killed all of our old URLs save for the homepage. Is it best for me to 301 the old homepage to it's new place, as well as the rest of the old site's top pages to according pages on the new site? Or is there a better solution?
