Title tags seem to be going against Rand and suggestions here, what can I do? Can you help me please?
-
Hi to all,
Ok so I have been beating myself up trying to figure out how to create a good ranking title for my websites homepage.
My competition uses commas in its title tags
But these are 100% against what Rand and many posts say here. I watched his whiteboard where he says don't use commas. There are posts that say, don't use commas.
The biggest one is mortonbuildings(dot)com - followed by - lesterbuildings(dot)com
They basically have the same title tags with commas.
So what's the catch here? What am I missing? of course these sites have Great Domain Authority, but I swear what they are doing is going against what Rand and many other seo professional's are preaching.
I thought it should read better for visitors? But to me it looks like keyword stuffing with a brand name?
Any help is greatly appreciated to let me know if these commas and strategies are good to do? or bad news?
Again thank you for your time to help a small business.

Yea right, with the sharks eating up the smaller guys, and growing bigger and bigger.
The reassuring thing is that Google is generally on your side, and will tell you to play by the rules because it has stated that there is a lot of spam to fight, but it is tackling it one big spam tactic at a time.

Thank you for all of the help.
I feel like a fish in the ocean sometimes.
The sharks are swimming all around, yet I am trying to get from point A to point B the correct way.
I consider Moz the authority on seo practices, yet I see so many sites that go against these different principles and out rank almost everyone in their industry, that I am like - well do you go with the pack and hope for the best, or do you stand your ground and do what's right,? kind of like that whole "If your friends were jumping off a bridge would you?" type of thing.
Thank you for pulling me back off the ledge.

Hi Chris,
You are correct in thinking that commas can be problematic. I tend to get around this by creating a short phrase that doesn't require any and then either use a pipe " | " or hypen " - " to separate this before my company name.
Try not to focus too much on what the competition are doing and stick to good-old best practice. You don't want a spammy sounding title and instead something that creates a short phrase. For example, you don't really want something that would say "Link Building, Linkbuilding, Linkbuilding Services, Linkbuilding Professionals". Instead, create something like "Link building services and co-citation creation - iNet SEO Ltd".
The more you can make it read like a short sentence, the better.

Hi Chris,
You are correct that keyword stuffing is no longer a legit SEO practice, and it is not ideal for user readability. Can you still get away with it sure. However, it is not a long term strategy as at any moment Google can pull its plug on you and de rank or penalize these efforts.
A better approach is to rank one keyword per page, you can rank for all the terms and potentially even higher then trying to rank one page for 3 terms. This is a better approach for users and Google alike.
To step into the shoes of the competitors. There was a time when the competition was low and ranking for multiple keywords per page was doable and so you had limited pages, and many words to rank for, so that is what you went after. Back in the day keyword stuffing was the way to go. As a result, companies such as Morton Buildings could easily rank for them. Currently they have built up the authority and the traffic for these terms, and so they are easily ranking top position for short tail (two word) competitive keywords. So in their eyes, they may even have in-house SEOs that understand that keyword stuffing is a no-no; however, they are currently ranking for these terms, and they may not want to touch and change what is not broken in their eyes. As soon as Google or other search engines take action on this, they will have to take appropriate measures to change and fix things up.
Again, for someone starting out in small business, at this point, going for multiple keywords per page is not a realistic approach. You have much better shot going after one keyword per page. Even a long tail keyword such as "small wooden horse barns" vs competitive "horse barns" to try to rank competitively.
Hope this helps!

Can anyone help me diagnose an indexing/sitemap issue on a large e-commerce site?
Hey guys. Wondering if someone can help diagnose a problem for me. Here's our site: https://www.flagandbanner.com/ We have a fairly large e-commerce site--roughly 23,000 urls according to crawls using both Moz and Screaming Frog. I have created an XML sitemap (using SF) and uploading to Webmaster Tools. WMT is only showing about 2,500 urls indexed. Further, WMT is showing that Google is indexing only about 1/2 (approx. 11,000) of the urls. Finally (to add even more confusion), when doing a site search on Google (site:) it's only showing about 5,400 urls found. The numbers are all over the place! Here's the robots.txt file: User-agent: *

Tags and Categories Ranking
Hello A few times I have come across tags and categories ranking for some relevant search terms. This seems strange as all category and tag pages would have 0 external links back to them - whereas pretty much every other page on the site would have external links. In most cases thy seem to rank along with the page, for example: for the search term "voiceover recording xxxxx" The voice over recording page will rank, followed by a similar tag page... If I make the tag links 'nofollow' would that help stop this? Cheers

Pagination Tag and Canonical
Once and for all - I would really like to get a few opinions regarding what is the best method working for you. For most of the all timers in here there's no need to introduce the pagination tag. The big question for me is regarding the canonical tag in those case. There are 2 options, as far as I consider: Options 1 will be implementing canonical tag directing to the main category page: For instance: example.com/shoes example.com/shoes?page=2 example.com/shoes?page=3 In this case all the three URL's will direct to the main category which is example.com/shoes Option 2 - using self-referral canonical for every page. In this case - example.com/shoes?page=2 will direct its canonical tag to example.com/shoes?page=2 and so on. What's the logic behind this? To make sure there are no floating pages onsite. If I'll use canonical that directs to the main category (option 1) then these pages won't get indexed and techniclly there won't be any indexed links to these pages. Your opinion?

Redirect help
I work for a company that has a domain that is something like www.neat-stuff.com but most people just use www.neatstuff.com without the dash. The redirect for the homepage works fine. We recently launched a new site and if you use www.neat-stuff.com/category it redirects from the old site to the new site just fine. However if you use www.neatstuff.com/category it does not properly redirect to www.neat-stuff.com/category. How do I fix that?

Are we being Penalized? Can someone Assess Please!
We have two eCommerce sites. Both the sites can broadly be divided into 3 pages 1. Home Page. 2. Detail Page. 3 Category Pages (Altogether our site has approx 3 Million pages each) These are the site URLs http://bit.ly/9tRZIi - This is targeted for USA Audience http://bit.ly/P8MxPR - This is targeted for UK audience The .com domain which was launched earlier in 2011 is doing okay with decent organic traffic Precautions Taken: To avoid content being duplicate on both the sites we are using: a. Geo-targeting through Google webmaster tools b. rel=alternate tag on printsasia.co.uk Problem 1. The .co.uk domain which was launched in May 2012 started gaining organic traffic slowly but then suddenly dropped to almost 0 after September 18. 2. When we use operator site:printsasia.co.uk and apply a filter on past week/month we don't see any result. While when same operator used for "any time" we see some results. 3. According to webmaster tool, Google has indexed 95% of our URLs in the sitemap Our concern: Is our UK site penalized for some reasons? If yes, what could be the possible reason(s) for this penalty and possible steps to get out of it? Would request if experts here can review our site and help us.

Am I keyword stuffing my titles?
I run a site where I answer questions. As I answer each question I choose a title for the page. I have been trying to get good keywords in my titles, but now I am wondering if I have been keyword stuffing them and perhaps I should be more succinct. So, let's say I had a question about a sore back. Here would be the title tag I would use: Why is my back sore? I have spinal pain and need relief and help. | My Main Keyword That's a fictitious example, but the idea is that I would be trying to get the keywords "back", "sore", "spinal", "pain", "relief" "help" and my main website keyword into the title. As I'm writing this I'm seeing the folly in this. I think it would likely be much better to simply have a title of Why is my back sore? So, I have three questions: 1. Is it better to have a succinct title targeting one keyword/keyword phrase than to get lots of keywords in my title? 2. Should I be putting my main keyword after each of my title? Shortly after doing this on 1700+ pages I was #1 for my main keyword. But, I was also doing other things as well to boost my presence for this keyword. 3. If I decide to do more succinct titles, how would you suggest I go about running a test to see which is better? Looking forward to your responses! Thanks!
