Homepage & Subdomain Love Story...
-
Hi,
Here's the situation:
There's this website URL.com which is a search engine for a certain purpose (android developers).
In fact, the homepage and maybe the "about" page are the only pages sitting on URL.com, all of the other inner pages (hundreds of thousands) are generated within one main Sub-Domain - X.URL.com
Also, the analytics is tracking only X.URL.com because those inner pages are the only ones to attract organic traffic.
So, in Analytics we see URL.com as referral traffic to X.URL.com
Also, in WebmasterTools under "Links to your site" we see like half a million links from URL.com to X.URL.com
Is this situation normal, do you think it may impact SEO in any way?
Last remark, organic traffic is growing in a great way to the inner pages generated by the search engine, which as said sitting under x.URL.com
Thanks

Hi Yoav,
I doubt this impacts your SEO as long as it isn't being seen as manipulative. I doubt that though, since the set-up is very transparent. If you want to exclude URL.com as a referrer, check out this guide.

Google treats 'most' subdomains as separate websites, GA allows you to use the same account to monitor more than one domain/sub-domain, however Google sees them as separate. What Google also checks is where the domains are hosted if they are on the same range of IP Addresses etc.
I can't see Google penalising you for having the x.domain.com pointing to the main domain as it's all to one page, if however you had the main domain pointing to all pages from a single sitemap style page Google would think that you're trying to spam it and would penalise you heavily possibly even ban.
I have 10 different websites within the group to look after most of the pages all link back to http://www.eriks.co.uk to pass juice back to the most important site

Dark Traffic & Long URLs - Clarification
Hi everyone, I've been reading the 2017 report by Groupon and the 2017 article by Neil Patel r.e. dark traffic. Both of these articles work on the assumption that most long URLs are not direct traffic because people wouldn't type a long URL into their browser. However, what happens to me personally all the time is that I start typing a URL into the browser, and the browser brings up a list of pages I've visited recently, and I click on some super long URL that I didn't bookmark but have visited in the past. That is legitimate direct traffic, but it's a long URL. I'm just wondering if there's something flawed in my reasoning or in the reasoning of Patel and Groupon. Maybe most people aren't relying on browsers like I am, or maybe things have changed a lot in the past 3 years. What do you think? And are there any more recent resources/articles that you would recommend r.e. trying to parse out dark traffic? https://neilpatel.com/blog/dark-traffic-stealing-data/ Thanks!

Within the Q&A forum, is it spam to include a website in our signature?
Hello Mozzers! I've seen several contributors that end their questions and responses with a website. Just for the sake of the argument, this is an example: -- Some text about the response/question --- Hope I've helped. Gaston Riera www.domain-Gaston-company.com To clarify more, the URL does never have a link. I've always considered that this is a place to share and help other by ours/others expertise not to self promote implicitly our company.

So, my question is related to the rules and best practices in the forum: Is it spam to include a website in the signature of a message? Does Moz's community staff take some action about those? Thanks!

Creation of Landing Pages. Subdomain or something else?
Hi, I have an issue deciding how my landing pages should be like and I would like to ask for your help. Currently my landing pages are configured and presented like this: http://www.example.com/fra/Landing75.php?t_src=example&t=AFF&t_cre=keyboard-price&t_trm=160o600&B=1496&A=371&TargetURL= I would like to know if making a subdomain landing page is advised, maybe something like this: http://LandingPage.example.com/Landing75.php?t_src=example&t=AFF&t_cre=keyboard-price&t_trm=160o600&B=1496&A=371&TargetURL= Or if you suggest doing something else with my landing pages - I would like to know that as well. p.s. - How I tell the webmasters (my affiliates) to make a clickable button that won't be a direct link to my landing page but will be some form of non-visible redirect? Thanks in advance 🙂

UK & Ireland Websites displaying same page differently in serps
Hi there, I have a Magento Enterprise store based in the UK and we have an Irish version which we created after finding an increasing amount of traffic from Ireland. One thing that I don't understand, is that if I search for one keyword on Google, the websites are displayed differently, when effectively they are identical websites. Here is how a result looks like for my UK store: http://i.imgur.com/NKSt4Qq.png And here is how a result looks like for my IE store: http://i.imgur.com/Cynv8Mz.png They both have the same Meta description, barring a few geographical words and terms. Both have on page descriptions as well as products. Yet the IE results display the description and the UK results display products and a tiny snippet of the description. Any ideas on how I can make my UK pages display like the IE one? Or, just why they are both displayed differently? Thanks

Meta description of homepage, changing to latest post
Here's something strange I noticed. The meta description for Engadget when doing a Google search is their latest blog entry. However, if you land on the homepage and view source the page, the meta description is a standard one for their homepage. My first impressions : Wha? How? and Wha? Could it be because it is a "news" site, Google goes "go on, have custom meta descriptions of your latest entry.." Thoughts?

Testing Your Homepage Title Tag
It can be a scary thing to change your homepage title tag to get the best results in the SERP while also maintaining your rankings. You obviously want to be irresistible and clickworthy… so how much time do you give before changing it up to test again?

Google Is Displaying An Alt image tag as my homepage's page title
Google is randomly displaying the alt image tag as the page title for my homepage. It happens when you search for the brand name, but the page title appears as "BrandName Logo" (obviously not "BrandName"). Has anybody seen this happen before?
