Site structure for multi-lingual hotel website (subfolder names)
-
Hi there superMozers!
I´ve read a quite a few questions about multi-lingual sites but none answered my doubt / idea, so here it is:
I´m re-designing an old website for a hotel in 4 different languages which are all** hosted on the same .com domain** as follows: example.com/english/ for english example.com/espanol/ for **spanish ** example.com/francais/ for french example.com/portugues/ for portuguese While doing keyword search, I have noticed that many travel agencies separate geographical areas by folders, therefor an **agency pomoting beach hotels in South America **will have a structure as follows:
travelagency.com/argentina-beach-hotels/
travelagency.com/peru-beach-hotels/
and they list hotels in each folder, therefor benefiting from those keywords to rank ahead of many independent hotels sites from those areas.
What **I would like to **do -rather than just naming those folders with the traditional /en/ for english or /fr/ for french etc- is take advantage of this extra language subfolder to_´include´_ important keywords in the name of the subfolders in the following way (supposing the we have a beach hotel in Argentina):
example.com/argentina-beach-hotel/ for english
example.com/hotel-playa-argentina/ for **spanish **
example.com/hotel-plage-argentine/ for french
example.com/hotel-praia-argentina/ for portuguese
Note that the same keywords are used in the name of the folder, but translated into the language the subfolders are.
In order to make things clear for the search engines I would specify the language in the html for each page.
My doubt is whether google or other search engines may consider this as ´stuffing´ although most travel agencies do it in their site structure.
Any Mozers have experience with this, any idea on how search engines may react, or if they could penalise the site?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the article Keri, very refreshing and interesting regarding GA, much appreciated!

Don't forget to think about how your boss might react when asked for how many visits all of your pages in French got for the past 60 days. With the /francais/ in the URL, it's a snap. Other structures it might be a little more challenging. It's something to at least think about ahead of time.

Thanks a lot Ryan, I appreciate the fast and detailed answer! Will go ahead with your recommendations!

My doubt is whether google or other search engines may consider this as ´stuffing´
Your approach is definitely not considered key word stuffing. Search engines will be absolutely fine with it and they would not penalize your site.
When creating a new physical folder structure, try to plan your server out as if it will last 20 years. The ideal folder structure wont change because you switched from html to xhtml, nor because Joe left your company, nor because your company decided to support another language. Your structure requires careful planning and thought.
Also remember your physical folder structure does not need to match your virtual folder structure. Your server can show a path such as /en/hotels but you can create a route to offer those files by navigating to /argentina-beach-hotels.
Your are offering your users a clear, readable folder structure. There is nothing black hat nor bad about that in any way.

How to deal with disproportional content investment for a ccTLD for a multi-language country,
We have a website for the Belgium market, serving content and products on be/nl (Dutch/Flemmish Belgium) and .be/fr (French Belgium). However, as a Dutch-based company you can see our primary focus and objective is to serve content to Dutch Belgium rather than French Belgium. I wonder if, and so, what are the downsides are of only investing in half of the site?

Does it hurt my general .be Google rankings if we put a lot of effort in .be/nl but far less in .be/fr ? (we used to have a ccTLD .fr as well, but pulled the plug because it wasn't profitable.
our belgium website is profitable for Dutch speaking part of Belgium but now we would like to expand, and enhance rankings. We're investing heavily in (local) brand awareness and partnerships, and content marketing for the Dutch part.0 -
Using a top level domain name and directing it to a subfolder
Hi, we have a large international network. Our main website sits on .com domain and is used by the UK market. We have an international site in a subdirectory .com/dk/ for Denmark for example. We have also purchased the domain name www.ourcompany.dk/. Should we be forwarding the domain name (www.ourcompany.dk/) to point to the subdirectory www.ourcomany.com.dk/ so in the browser it shows up as www.ourcompany.dk or should we be displaying it as www.ourcompany.com/dk/? Are there any pros and cons to this method? Which one is best and are there any benefits in SEO. Ideally we want the .com domain name to have the best domain authority so would this impact it in any way? Any tips would be great.

Country subfolders showing as sitelinks in Google, country targeting for home page no longer working
Hi There, Just wondering if you can help. Our site has 3 region versions (General .com, /ie/ for Ireland and /gb/ for UK), each submitted to Google Webmaster Tools as seperate sites with hreflang tags in the head section of all pages. Google was showing the correct results for a few weeks, but I resubmitted the home pages with slight text changes last week and something strange happened, though it may have been coincidental timing. When we search for the brand name in google.ie or google.co.uk, the .com now shows as the main site, where the sitelinks still show the correct country versions. However, the country subdirectories are now appearing as sitelinks, which is likely causing the problem. I have demoted these on GWT, but unsure as to whether that will work and it seems to take a while for sitelink demotion to work. Has anyone had anything similar happen? I thought perhaps it was a markup issue breaking the head section so that Google can no longer see the hreflangs pointing to each other as alternates. I checked the source code in w3 validator and it doesn't show any errors. Anyway, any help would be much appreciated - and thanks to anyone who gets back, it's a tricky type of issue to troubleshoot. Thanks, Ro

How to handle rel canonical on secondary TLD's - multi regional sites.
I currently have a .com domain which I am think of duplicating the content on to another tld, CO.UK (and regionalize some aspects like contact numbers etc). From my research, it seems that in gwt you must then indicate which country you wish to target, in the co.uk case the UK. My question is how should I handle rel canonical in the duplicated site. should it rel canonical back to the .com or the co.uk? Any other pointers would also be appreciated. Thx

Country specific domains pointing to a .com site
Hello, I am new to seo so please be easy if this happens to be a "silly" question. My company has a .com site. We are expanding into global markets, focusing on specific countries right now. General question: Would I be penalized for duplicate content if I purchased country-specific domains and pointed them to the .com site? Thanks, Jim
