Merging 3 websites into 1
-
Hi
I was wondering if someone can give me a bit of advice - outside of my full time job I run three websites - all in the same area, but all do three different things
1. Directory (DA19)
2. Blog (DA 23)
3. Products (DA35)
I want to merger all three website into one and all be on one website (rather do it now than keep working on three websites). I have included the DAs of each site ( I know they are not amazing, but i've only recently started working on two of them), but I want to place all three websites under the Blog url.
Regarding 301's of the pages, would I be better doing at the top level and 301 all the pages to the home page, or spending the time and 301 the old product page for instance to the new product page - this is a much bigger project, but what are the potential gains.
Is there anything else I should consider when switching the sites - all three are wordpress sites (I know it has its limitations but they are easy to create).
Thanks in Advance
Andy

Hi,
Going to agree with Fuel Interactive here - the best practice is to redirect page-by-page if you are combining sites, unless you are set on deleting / consolidating content from the merged sites into one smaller, tidier website. In that case, it's still best practice to redirect to the most appropriate page if one exists, rather than just to the home page.
It can be a real pain to go through a consolidation / redirection process like this, so only do this if it's really necessary and will likely cause a big uplift in either performance or your ability to manage each area of the business.
Dave is right that IIS can do a URL by URL redirect for you, or you can do this in your .htaccess file if you are using an Apache server as opposed to a Microsoft IIS server.

From a user stand point and a search engine stand point, I feel it would be better to take the time to redirect each product page from the old site to the corresponding product page on the new site. I am not sure if there is an easy way to automate this, but it is definitely the route to go versus just sending all of the pages to the home page. Think of it from a user point of view. If there was a link to a product on the old site out there and someone clicks expecting more information on that product and then gets redirected to a homepage they will not find what they are looking for and might just bounce off the site. However, bringing them to the appropriate page will keep the user on the site longer and might ultimately end in a conversion (not sure what vertical you are in, I associated products with retail). This would ultimately send positive signals to search engines on the placements of those redirects. Though it might not seem like an issue for a single page or even a few pages, implemented across the board this could make a huge difference.
Hope that helps.

On IIS you have the ability to redirect the whole domain with a HTTP ReDirect 301 which also takes care of URIs with something like :-
Redirect requests to this destination : http://www.eriks.co.uk/$S$Q
This then takes anything that follows and re-maps to the same URI on the new page. (assuming and providing the URI's are going to be the same!)
The other option would be 301 redirects to avoid the SEO hit being as harsh.
I have combined a number of sites in the last 12 months in this way.
Good luck!

Hi Andy,
Interesting project. So you want a Wordpress multisite or do you want to move all your content to a single domain? It would help if we could get your URL to see what's going on. Moving sites is painful, especially because you will undoubtedly take a hit in the rankings for awhile.
After thinking about this for just a few minutes, I wonder why you need to put all the content from each site under blog. Why not keep products, directory and blog? And just after writing that question, now I know I need more details in order to give you sound advice. Post back with specific domains if you still need help.
Cheers!

Delay to rank for authority website versus new website
Hello, I have a website that has been existing for years. How long does it take if I have a good content on a page for it to rank ? I read here and that that it can take 4 to 6 months but it never says if it is for a brand new website or a old website that has an authority and some links. I also read that some people publish content and rank within a week on competitive keywords. So who is right, what is there to read in between the lines ?

Duplicate content on recruitment website
Hi everyone, It seems that Panda 4.2 has hit some industries more than others. I just started working on a website, that has no manual action, but the organic traffic has dropped massively in the last few months. Their external linking profile seems to be fine, but I suspect usability issues, especially the duplication may be the reason. The website is a recruitment website in a specific industry only. However, they posts jobs for their clients, that can be very similar, and in the same time they can have 20 jobs with the same title and very similar job descriptions. The website currently have over 200 pages with potential duplicate content. Additionally, these jobs get posted on job portals, with the same content (Happens automatically through a feed). The questions here are: How bad would this be for the website usability, and would it be the reason the traffic went down? Is this the affect of Panda 4.2 that is still rolling What can be done to resolve these issues? Thank you in advance.

2 eCommerce stores that are identical 1 for US 1 for CA, what's the best way to SEO?
Hello everyone! I have an SEO question that I cannot solve given the parameters of the project, and I was wondering if someone could provide me with the next best alternative to my situation. Thank you in advance. The problem: Two eCommerce stores are completely identical (structure, products, descriptions, content) but they are on separate domains for currency and targeting purposes. www.website-can.com is for Canada and www.website-usa.com is for US. Due to exchange rate issues, we are unable to combine the 2 domains into 1 store and optimize. What's been done? I have optimized the Canadian store with unique meta titles and descriptions for every page and every product. However I have left the US store untouched. I would like to gain more visibility for the US Store but it is very difficult to create unique content considering the products are identical. I have evaluated using canonicals but that would ask Google to only look at either the Canadian or US store, , correct me if i'm wrong. I am looking for the next best solution given the challenges and I was wondering if someone could provide me with some ideas.

Coupon websites as affiliates
We recently started using shareasale.com for affiliate marketing and have received literally hundreds of applications from coupon websites wanting to become affiliates. Most we have not approved as the quality of the sites is poor. However, a few sites seem more legitimate. Could having these types of sites harm our seo in any way?

Problem with SEO for my Image based website.
My website focuses on movie posters. I'm having a little debate on what is the best way to have images linked to. The current image location is stored like this: /movie-name/poster-1.jpg
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | thedevilseeker
/movie-name/poster-2.jpg Is it best to leave it like that or change it to : /movie-name/movie-name-poster-1.jpg
/movie-name/movie-name-poster-1.jpg The reason I ask, is that I read today that Google uses the image name to help detect what the image is about. At the same time, if the movie name is the in folder structure, along with the image name... wouldn't it start to look like keyword stuffing?0 -
Website stuck on the second page
Hi there Can you please help me. I did some link building and worked with website last couple of months and rank got better but all keywords are on the second page, some of them are 11th and 12th. Is there anything I did wrong and google dont allow the website on the first page? Or should I just go on. It just looks strange keywords are on the second page for 2 weeks and not going to the first page for any single day. The website is quite old, around 10 years. Anyone knows what it is or where I can read about it?

$1,500 question
I have $1,500 to spend to promote 8 years old website. Almost no SEO work was done for the site in the past 3-4 years. The site has a couple hundreds (around 300) external backlinks pointing to the homepage, and around 30 backlinks pointing to internal pages. It gets around 60% traffic from referring sites, 30% direct, and 10% from SE. The homepage has PR 4. It ranks around 70th place in Google rankings for one of the main keywords. No keyword research has been done for the site. Looking for long term benefits. What would be the best way, in your opinion, to spend this money?
