Google is squashing my rankings, insight please?

Last year with penguin, our rankings took a hit. We have worked hard, tirelessly, to recover. Last june we had no social media. We had an old website. We completely updated our website to responsive design, over 500k pages. We post daily fresh content, we expanded into social media. We now have 100k followers on Facebook. We are seeing thousands of Google + in the last few months, and not by hiring a single SEO consultant, and we use no ad-words or any paid advertising (except for adsense, limited on our site). We got thousands of Google +1's simply by sharing content in different circles and they liked us the old fashioned way. And yet our rankings have actually decreased. Just Saturday night, suddenly rankings that were on page 2 of Google dropped to page 5. Rankings on page 5 dropped to page 13, over night. Mind you, last year (prior to the penguin update), those page 2 and page 5 rankings were in the top 3 spots on page one. So its been quite a fall. We are doing something wrong, and I don't know what it is. The overnight rankings drop did not correspond with anything we did whatsoever. They just literally dropped abruptly.
here is our site: (redacted for privacy, thanks for answering my question!)
here is a sample of a fallen ranking. Friday, for example, we ranked on page one of google in this search:(redacted)
and now we are on page 3.I am open to ideas, suggestions. I want to raise our D/A and have worked hard over the last year to do so, but it doesn't seem to be working too well. Do i have bad inbound links? Is our site not a quality enough user experience? Outside advice is well received. Thank you to anyone who can lend their insight.

When you submit the resubmission request, be honest and descriptive in your reply. State clearly what you have done to repair the manual penalty placed agaist your site, and that to the best of your knowledge, the issue is taken care of.
-
The thing is, his site has no penalty on the site, only on the bad links, removing the bad links that are already being ignored will do nothing
"we are taking targeted action on the unnatural links instead of on the site’s ranking as a whole"
-
Hello Marshill,
If you ask me I would say Yes, this could be one of the reason why your rankings are dropped and not coming back even after the extensive efforts you have put on the content. My advice here is to remove as many of these kinds of links as possible, submit the rest to disavow file and send it to Google for reconsideration request (now as you have mentioned that you have a manual penalty, you have to do this!)
Once Google will look in to your effort they most probably will lift your penalty and then good links will slowly take your rankings back. Incase Google reject your reconsideration request you have to go through the removal and disavow process again.
Hope this helps!
-
i actually have room to be optimistic. when i submitted the reconsideration request, Google knew about my manual action and said if I was clear, they would remove the manual action...so who knows
-
thanks Alan. I appreciate the help from the folks here, although I'm dismayed you said I might be out of luck. At the very least, I will be unrestrained to rebuild my rankings for those pages right? I mean, nothing will be holding them down anymore?
-
you need to explain that to them, and outline your efforts
-
since some of my 'bad links' are on blogspot and wordpress that an seo consultant created years ago, I have no access to remove them. Does Google expect me to try to confiscate those accounts on Blogspot or can I just disavaow them?
-
none, but don't expect much.
-
well it is a manual penalty. i will do the right thing and ask for mercy, what choice do I have?
-
some good news and some bad news.
Links got long ago can come back and bite you any day.
The fact that google said that they have not penalized your site, but rather just the links, is not all good news. it means that they have ignored the links, that why your site has dropped, removing them will not lead to a rise in rank, it means that where you rank now isa where you will rank without those links, removed or ignored.
At least that is how I understand it. I would still remove them in case I am wrong
-
Bingo! You are right! I see the message from Google: I had no idea...well that solves it. i will get right on it. I should use the disavow tool?

Unnatural links to your site—impacts links
Google has detected a pattern of unnatural artificial, deceptive, or manipulative links pointing to pages on this site. Some links may be outside of the webmaster’s control, so for this incident we are taking targeted action on the unnatural links instead of on the site’s ranking as a whole. Learn more. |

Hi Moosa. Thanks for pointing those out! Yea those links happend several years ago when i did hire an SEO company to help us. Google is not "surprised" by those links since they have been around a while (and I'm going to remove them now that you showed them to me). But would those links be the reason I dropped recently? Do you have any advice on building domain authority? did you find the website easy to navigate and use? We really want a good user experience. Yes we got our FB likes completely legitimately, we did spend some money on FB ads within facebook (didn't spend anything in Google), not to mention we got lucky with a FB post that was viral and had 30,000 shares. plus we put out great stuff on FB, every day, so the likes naturally happen. I'm just waiting for Google to see our hard work and put us back in the green...:(
-
do you have any actions against you in WMT?
How did you get 100k likes on Facebook? That's a lot, did you get them legit?
-
You explained pretty much everything on what happened and your reaction to that update since last year. You have done quite an extensive work on design and content but penguin update usually refers to the links that are pointing back to your website.
I quickly get in to your link profile and found tons of links that are coming from blog comments or article websites. Here are few of the examples…
- http://www.science20.com/news_articles/3500yearold_mummies_prove_ancient_origin_heart_disease (Keyword used: the therapist)
- http://www.searchenginejournal.com/microsoft-to-revamp-msn-portal-to-fully-integrate-bing/11263/ (Keyword used: the therapist)
- http://www.fatmanunleashed.com/weekly-check-in-31-body-fat/ (Keyword used: the therapist)
What you should be doing?
- Remove as many links to irrelevant sites as possible
- Try not to get link with exact match anchor text
- Say a big no to links that are coming from Blog Comments, Forum Signatures, Article websites and more.
My advice here is to audit your link profile in detail and see how many bad links you can remove and at the same time build as many quality links as possible. Submit the Reconsideration request to Google and you probably will be get your rankings and traffic back.
Hope this helps!

User intent and ranking
Hello, I was doing search to see who ranks on the keyword "bike tours" i noticed a lot of website rank without content "text". Is it because they fulfil the user intent with a search box where you can search by date and destination, trip type and price that google ranks those webpages ? It is the same for the keyword Paris bike tours https://www.fattiretours.com/paris How do they rank with so little content (once again is it because the fulfil the user intent ) Thank you,

Google Update? Anyone seeing a drastic change in rankings?
Hey everyone, Has anyone seen a drastic change in clients Google Rankings, we have one which has dropped from 9.5% visibility to 5.4% in one month.. It's extremely worrying as I have never seen a drop like this before since I've managed the account, in fact rankings have increased month on month since we took over the account. I've also looked at google, no penalty showing, I've started removing spammy sites who link to us and also added no follow to some of the links on the site which linked out to try and keep some link juice in the site. Anything else I can try / do?

Silly Question still - Because I am paying high to google adwords is it possible google can't rank me high in organic?
Hello All, My ecommerce site gone in penalty more than 3 years before and within 3 months I got message from google penalty removed. Since then till date my organic ranking is very worst. In this 3 years I improved my site onpage very great. If I compare my site with all other competitors who are ranking in top 10 then my onpage that includes all schema, reviews, sitemap, header tags, meta's etc, social media, site structure, most imp speed, google page speed insight score, pingdom, w3c errors, alexa rank, global rank, UI, offers, design, content, code to text raito, engagement rate, page views, time on site etc all my sites always good compare to competitors. They also have few backlinks I do have few backlinks only. I am doing very high google adwords and my conversion rate is very very good. But do you think because I am paying since last 3 year high to google because of that google have some setting or strategy that those who perform well in adwords so not to bring up in organic? Is it possible I can talk with google on this? If yes then what will be the medium of conversation? Pls give some valuable inputs I am performing very much in paid so user end site is very very well. Thanks!

Ranking Suggestions
Hi There, I am currently working on this site: completesteamclean.ca to rank as high as possible for "carpet cleaning windsor" on Google.ca and I can't seem to make any head way against the other websites ranking. I've optimized the page, created social media accounts for activity, even invested in Google Adwords and Facebook ads to try to boost my presence. Does anyone have any suggestions on any tactics/revisions I can make that may help boost my site?

How to leverage Google Images?
My Google search rankings are improving rapidly at the moment, but a lot of my rankings are for images (presume that means the images are appearing near the top in Google Images). How do I capitalise on that? It's not really much help to me that my images are popular unless it results in traffic to the pages where those images are used. I am running Wordpress so I have the option to have images embed as "no link", "link to attachment page", "link to original image", etc. Is there any advantage of using one of these over the other? I'd really like to set it up so that when a Google Images user clicks "View Image" it loads the attachment page or the host content page rather than the image. Bad SEO? I'm not sure if the fact that I'm using Jetpack Photon CDN image hosting will make this more complicated or not. Tony

Is there a way to contact Google besides the google product forum?
Our traffic from google has dropped more than 35% and continues to fall. We have been on this forum and google's webmaster forum trying to get help. We received great advice, have waited months, but instead of our traffic improving, it has worsened. We are being penalized by google for many keywords such as trophies, trophies and awards and countless others - we were on page one previously. We filed two reconsideration requests and were told both times that there were no manual penalties. Some of our pages continue to rank well, so it is not across the board (but all of our listings went down a bit). We have made countless changes (please see below). Our busy season was from March to May and we got clobbered. Google, as most people know, is a monopoly when it comes to traffic, so we are getting killed. At first we thought it was Penquin, but it looks like we started getting killed late last year. Lots of unusual things happened - we had a large spike in traffic for two days, then lost our branded keywords, then our main keywords. Our branded keywords came back pretty quickly, but nothing else did. We have received wonderful advice and made most of the changes. We are a very reputable company and have a feeling we are being penalized for something other than spamming. For example, we have a mobile site we added late last year and a wholesale system was added around the same time. Since the date does not coincide with Penquin, we think there is some major technical driver, but have no idea what to do at this point. The webmasters have all been helpful, but nothing is working. We are trying to find out what one does in a situation as we are trying to avoid closing our business. Thank you! Changes Made: 1. We had many crawl errors so we reduced them significantly 2. We had introduced a mobile website in January which we
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | trophycentraltrophiesandawards
thought may have been the cause (splitting traffic, duplicate content, etc.),
so we had our mobile provider add the site to their robots.txt file. 3. We were told by a webmaster that their were too many
links from our search provider, so we have them put the search pages in a
robots.txt file. 4. We were told that we had too much duplicate content. This was / is true, as we have hundred of legitate products that are similar:
example trophies and certificates that are virtually the same but are
for different sports or have different colors and sizes. Still, we added more content and added no index tags to many products. We compared our % of dups to competitors and it is far less. 5. At the recommendation of another webmaster, we changed
many pages that might have been splitting traffic. 6. Another webmaster told us that too many people were
linking into our site with the same text, namely Trophy Central and that it
might have appeared we were trying to game the system somehow. We have never bought links and don't even have a webmaster although over the last 10 years have worked with programmers and seo companies (but we don't think any have done anything unusual). 7. At the suggestion of another webmaster, we have tried to
improve our link profile. For example,
we found Yahoo was not linking to our url. 8. We were told to setup a 404 page, so we did 9. We were told to ensure that all of the similar domains
were pointing to www.trophycentral.com/ so we setup redirects 10. We were told that a site that we have linking to us from too many places so we reduced it to 1. Our key pages have A rankings from SEOMOZ for the selected keywords. We have made countless other changes recommended by experts
but have seen no improvements (actually got worse). I am the
president of the company and have made most of the above recent changes myself. Our website is trophycentral.com0 -
Well Ranked National Site - Need Local Rankings
We are a virtual company doing business in 30 states nationwide. All our business is done via the phone, fax, email and express mail. Back in 2008 I optimized our small 8 page website for our key terms and was able to rank the site #1 nationally for our main keywords. (I did a 6 month consulting gig for the company). The site remained #1 in Google until last year when some serious competitors entered the space and knocked us down to the middle of page one. Then with the Panda update #1 & #2 we have seen our traffic drop 50% mostly due to not receiving the City + Keywords rankings any more. I have now been hired full time to bring us back but my question is this Do I need to build out city specific pages on the existing website? Do I need to buy keyword specific domains and create microsites? Do a combination of both? I would love to do both but I have to prioritize my efforts. Any thoughts would be great.

Google swapped our website's long standing ranking home page for a less authoritative product page?
Our website has ranked for two variations of a keyword, one singular & the other plural in Google at #1 & #2 (for over a year). Keep in mind both links in serps were pointed to our home page. This year we targeted both variations of the keyword in PPC to a products landing page(still relevant to the keywords) within our website. After about 6 weeks, Google swapped out the long standing ranked home page links (p.a. 55) rank #1,2 with the ppc directed product page links (p.a. 01) and dropped us to #2 & #8 respectively in search results for the singular and plural version of the keyword. Would you consider this swapping of pages temporary, if the volume of traffic slowed on our product page?
