Duplicate title tags being caused by upper case and lower case version of urls'
-
Hi
GWT is reporting lots of duplicate titles for a clients new site.
Mainly these are due to 2x different versions of the url, one with words starting with an upper case character and the other all lower case.
Clients dev saying this has something to do with windows server and is ok!
Is this correct or should i be telling them to delete and then 301 redirect all upper case versions to the lower case (since lower case better practice) and that will deal with the reported dupe titles ?
All Best

Hi Tom
Sorry to be a pain but please can you confirm re my latest question/comment reply to yours, i.e. does your advice still stand if client on a windows server (since i dont think have .htaccess files or do/can they?)
And if not then is there a similar course of action that can be taken ?
Cheers

That great Tom thanks alot for your advice !
Clients on a windows server, am i right in thinking they dont have htaccess files since they are just on apache ?
If so is principle/code the same and just done in a different file ? if so any ideas what that file is ? or am i mistaken and windows do have htaccess files ?
Cheers

Hi Dan
I wouldn't want to leave anything to doubt and would prefer to have 1 version of each URL available.
Fortunately, a fairly simple solution can be put in place in your htaccess file. As always, please backup and test before trying any implementation - I can't tell you how many times I've made a simple mistake in the htaccess file that causes big problems!
Anyway, the code you'd want to enter at the top of the file is:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteMap lc int:tolower
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} [A-Z]
RewriteRule (.*) ${lc:$1} [R=301,L]That code will basically rewrite any URL containing uppercase letters to the same URL using only lowercase.
Redirects are quicker and more reliable than canonical tags in my experience and this doesn't take long to get implemented, so best not leave anything to chance.
Hope this helps.

GWT sometimes takes a while to register the change. It just actually happened on one of my clients pages where there was a bug in the code made by the developer and they got 30,000 duplicate title and description errors. It was fixed about 2 months ago and while the errors have dropped to 2000 or so, it is still not at zero yet, so it does take some time depending on how often Google crawls the site.
If the developer says they did it, I would recommend the first thing you do is simply check that they did it. Go to one of the pages in question, both one with capital and without, and do a view source on both to check that the rel="canonical" tag is there and is correct. Programmers don't always know much about SEO so they may be implementing them wrong.

Thanks Raymond
The developers are saying they have done this
Does that mean that if its showing in GWT it hasnt been done ?
Cheers

As a simpler solution, why don't you just add a rel="canonical" tag to each page specifying the one you want? That should take care of any duplicate content issues.
I hope this helps.

Which Version Url to Use for Canonical Tags and in General for Homepage.
I want to put canonical tags on the homepage of a site. cant figure out the version of URL of the homepage should be with a / at the end or without the / ( www.example.com of www.example.com/ ) if I put into the google the URL with / I get the URL without the / in my browser, and it isn't showing as a redirect in my moz extension or other tools. But when I copy the URL from browser and paste elsewhere it pastes with a / I have two questions 1 - in general how does it work with URLs of homepages - I see this happening with lots of sites? 2 - which URL should I set as the canonical version of my homepage? Thanks so much

How do you 'close down' a website?
Hello all, If a company acquires a smaller company and 'absorbs' its products and services into its own website, what is the protocol with closing down the smaller company's site? So far we added our branding to the site alerting their visitors to the imminent takeover, and 301 redirected certain pages - soon we'll be redirecting all the pages to their counterparts on the main website. Once that's done, should we noindex the old site? Anything else? Thanks, Caro

What's the best format for a e-commerce URL product page
We have over 2000 non branded experiences and activities sold through our website. The website is having a face lift with the a new look and a stronger focus on SEO. As part of this, I am keen to establish what the best practice is for product based URLs. I've researched the market and come up with a few alternatives that are used: domain/category/subcategory/activity_name domain/activity_name/category/subcategory/activity_reference domain/generic_term/activity_reference/activity_name domain/category/activity_location/activity_name Activities are location based but the location can change (say once every 2 years). Activity names, category, subcategory and activity_reference rarely change. Are there any thoughts/ research on the best method? (If there is one) Many thanks in advance for your insights.

Why do I get duplicate content errors just for tags I place on blog entries?
I the SEO MOZ crawl diagnostics for my site, www.heartspm.com, I am getting over 100 duplicate content errors on links built from tags on blog entries. I do have the original base blog entry in my site map not referencing the tags. Similarly, I am getting almost 200 duplicate meta description errors in Google Webmaster Tools associated with links automatically generated from tags on my blog. I have more understanding that I could get these errors from my forum, since the forum entries are not in the sitemap, but the blog entries are there in the site map. I thought the tags were only there to help people search by category. I don't understand why every tag becomes its' own link. I can see how this falsely creates the impression of a lot of duplicate data. As seen in GWT: Pages with duplicate meta descriptions Pages [Customer concerns about the use of home water by pest control companies.](javascript:dropInfo('zip_0div', 'none', document.getElementById('zip_0zipimg'), 'none', null);)/category/job-site-requirements/tag/cost-of-water/tag/irrigation-usage/tag/save-water/tag/standard-industry-practice/tag/water-use 6 [Pest control operator draws analogy between Children's Day and the state of the pest control industr](javascript:dropInfo('zip_1div', 'none', document.getElementById('zip_1zipimg'), 'none', null);)/tag/children-in-modern-world/tag/children/tag/childrens-day/tag/conservation-medicine/tag/ecowise-certified/tag/estonia/tag/extermination-service/tag/exterminator/tag/green-thumb/tag/hearts-pest-management/tag/higher-certification/tag/higher-education/tag/tartu/tag/united-states

High number of Duplicate Page titles and Content related to index.php
It appears that every page on our site (www.bridgewinners.com) also creates a version of itself with a suffix. This results in Seomoz indicating that there are thousands of duplicate titles and content. 1. Does this matter? If so, how much? 2. How do I eliminate this (we are using joomla)? Thanks.

Duplicate Page Content and Title for product pages. Is there a way to fix it?
We we're doing pretty good with our SEO, until we added product listing pages. The errors are mostly Duplicate Page Content/Title. e.g. Title: Masterpet | New Zealand Products MasterPet Product page1 MasterPet Product page2 Because the list of products are displayed on several pages, the crawler detects that these two URLs have the same title. From 0 Errors two weeks ago, to 14k+ errors. Is this something we could fix or bother fixing? Will our SERP ranking suffer because of this? Hoping someone could shed some light on this issue. Thanks.
