Remove unwanted web pages
-
Hi All,
I have a number of web pages that yield little or no traffic. I have analysed the traffic data in both normal SERPs and Google Adwords over a year. All low traffic pages rank on the first page.
Redirecting these poor performing pages to the main content page would provide the user with a richer experience. Why do I need to remove these pages?
Cost, time and duplicate content issues is causing untold problems.
Removing the existance of the low/no traffic pages will allow me to provide fresh content on the main content pages.Question
Each main content page has about 20 low/no traffic pages associated with it.
I have about 30 instances of the main page scenario.Would carrying htacces page redirects hurt my ranking or worse?

Hi Jane & Spencer,
Thank you for the additional information.

Hi Mark,
Redirection and an updated XML sitemap will be enough to ensure this change is acknowledged properly by Google.
Cheers,
Jane

Hi Spencer,
Thank you for you reply.
My logic was telling me the same.Redirect 301 /no-traffic-page.html www.mywebsite.co.uk/main-content-page.html
Question
Whilst using a 301 redirect within my .htaccess file, removing the the instance of the page on the physical server and within my XML sitemap, should i be doing anything else?Regards Mark

Obviously any rankings for the pages that you are getting rid of would be negatively affected because you are removing the pages, but the 301 redirects will pass along value from any links pointing to the removed pages, which may have positive ranking effects on the main content pages.

URL structure - Page Path vs No Page Path
We are currently re building our URL structure for eccomerce websites. We have seen a lot of site removing the page path on product pages e.g. https://www.theiconic.co.nz/liberty-beach-blossom-shirt-680193.html versus what would normally be https://www.theiconic.co.nz/womens-clothing-tops/liberty-beach-blossom-shirt-680193.html Should we be removing the site page path for a product page to keep the url shorter or should we keep it? I can see that we would loose the hierarchy juice to a product page but not sure what is the right thing to do.

Tricky: Should I remove this extra navigation?
Hello there, I am working on a website in which the owner has written navigation links manually at the end of all pages/posts. Example. Page/Post Entry content. Go to home click here,

Menu item 2
Menu item 3
Menu item 4 etc We already have navigation links for that on the main menu and additionally on a sidebar. But we are two years in, and they have always been there. Is there a chance removing all these links will better internal pagerank distribution? Website has millions of views/month so I want to be sure - if I should just leave them as is or remove them all.
Or what extra questions should I be asking myself about this.0 -
Landing pages, are my pages competing?
If I have identified a keyword which generates income and when searched in google my homepage comes up ranked second, should I still create a landing page based on that keyword or will it compete with my homepage and cause it to rank lower?

How to deal with everscrolling pages?
A website keeps showing more articles when pressing a "load more" button. This loads additional category pages with a page parameter (e.g. ...?page=1, ...?page=2, etc.), as suggested by Google to get all pages indexed. The problem is that this creates thousands of additional, duplicate pages, with a duplicate title, header, and very unfocused content. They also show as duplicate content in Moz. The pages are indexed by Google, but none of them is ranking. What do you guys think: add a no-follow to the load-more button, so search engines will never see them? Thanks for your input!

If we have swopped the keyword (leaflet printing) from this page http://www.fastprint.co.uk/leaflet-flyer-printing/ and moved it to http://www.fastprint.co.uk/ But the inner page is still ranking for the keyword is there a way to tell Google?

What to do with WordPress generated pages?
I'm an SEOmoz Newbie and have a very specific question about the auto generated WordPress Pages. SEOmoz caught and labeled the auto generated WP pages as Crawl Warnings like: Long URL - 302 - Title Element to Long - Missing Meta Description Tag - Too Many On-Page Links So I have learned the lesson and have now made those pages "no follow" / "no idex." HOWEVER, WHAT DO I DO WITH THE ONES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN INDEXED? Do I... 1. Just leave them as is a hope they don't hurt me from an SEO perspective? 2. Redirect them all to a relevant page? I'm sure many people have had this issue. What do you think? Thanks Dominic

Page titles
Hi Guys, Hope your all well and business is good. I have been going through and changing page titles for my site which is currently huge attracting massive amounts of traffic. However from my pro membership i have notice a lot of the rankings in Google search engine has decreased. I have been using a strategy that i read on SEOMoz which is; example Keyword | Page heading | company name Is this why? if so what is the best method? I have changed nothing else so far.
