Want to move site to wordpress and keep links without using redicrects
-
I have an old cluny site that has been around for about 56 years. It is on the homestead platform. I want to move the site to a thesis theme 2.1 wordpress platform without losing my links. I would prefer not to do 301 redicrects. With thesis I can specify the URL for each page of the wordpress site, however the wordpress site is hosted on hostgator as a subdomain of another site and the other problem is that wordpress adds a back slash that is not present on the old site. I can, however add .html to the URL's for pages on the wordpress site to conform to the URL's on the old html site. Will this work?
thx
Paul
p.s. the URL for my old site is www.affordable-uncontested-divorce.com

What about links that aren't going to the home page but to other pages on my old site Can those also be redirected after the old site is taken down? The hostgator plan that I have puts the first site as the main domain and subsequent sites that I create and/ or host with them are subdomains. I read somewhere that for seo purposes it makes no difference.

I agree, the best way would be to use 301 redirects.
You will lose some benefit of links, but you will gain this with better internal linking that you can get if you setup Wordpress correct.
-
Hi,
As long as you have the domain then you have control over the redirects. The hosting is just a place that your domain lives in. So you can host your domain anywhere you wish and redirect the traffic within your new hosting account.
Also as I asked earlier what did you mean by 'the wordpress site is hosted on hostgator as a subdomain of another site'?
-
Also, forgive my ignorance but my old site is hosted on "homestead" and after I transfer my domain I will take down the old site. Don't the redirects have to be done on the pages of the old site, so when i take down the old site there won't be any more redirects? Otherwise put do I have to ekep the old site up and pay for hosting for it?

Are 301 redirects "permanent" meaning do they, over time, pass less and less link juice?

To remove the / at the end you'll want to go to settings and then to permalinks in wordpress and you need to change the url structure to look like the attached image. This is assuming that you are using post types as your urls.
I would still highly advise that you just use 301 redirects and remove the html because it sounds sounds a$$ backwards to add it back in intentionally, but that's more of a personal preference then anything that is actually seo beneficial.
As Dean asked, you should explain what you mean by it being hosted as a subdomain of another site. Either way it's setup you should be able to configure dns settings to set it as it's own domain even if it is technically sitting in a folder on another website.
P.S. Always remember to back everything up when making changes. In this case remember what setting the permalinks were on before or copy down what is currently in the custom structure area just in case for some reason it doesn't work out how you would like it to.

Just to add some info, I recently moved a site with lots of pages from blogger to Wordpress and just added 301 redirect from .htaccess and it didn't hurt the rankings.

To keep your links you need to:
-
Point the domain
-
In your hostgator Cpanel, go to "AddOn Domains" and create an entry for affordable-uncontested-divorce.com. In Document Root you need to add your Wordpress directory.
-
Go to Godaddy and point your domain to Hostgator Name Servers (it's in the left pane in your Cpanel under Name Servers)
-
Use Permalinks and keep the same URL structure when creating your Wordpress content.
-
In Wordpress go to Settings-> Permalinks and select the "Custom Structure". In the textfield insert /%postname%.html. This will solve the .html problem for posts but for pages you need to use rewrite rules. There is an old plugin that do it , but I don't know if it works with 3.9 http://www.introsites.co.uk/wordpress/html-on-pages-plugin.html.
-
Your "Home" page is http://www.affordable-uncontested-divorce.com/Index.html. Create a page called "Index" and add your home content to that page. In "Reading Settings" define that page as your "static home page"
-
For the other pages, just create it with the same name that you're using now. Just under the title of the page in Wordpress Editor, change the permalink to the same URL of the old site.
If you need any help let me know...

Disavow links and domain of SPAM links
Hi, I have a big problem. For the past month, my company website has been scrape by hackers. This is how they do it: 1. Hack un-monitored and/or sites that are still using old version of wordpress or other out of the box CMS. 2. Created Spam pages with links to my pages plus plant trojan horse and script to automatically grab resources from my server. Some sites where directly uploaded with pages from my sites. 3. Pages created with title, keywords and description which consists of my company brand name. 4. Using http-referrer to redirect google search results to competitor sites. What I have done currently: 1. Block identified site's IP in my WAF. This prevented those hacked sites to grab resources from my site via scripts. 2. Reach out to webmasters and hosting companies to remove those affected sites. Currently it's not quite effective as many of the sites has no webmaster. Only a few hosting company respond promptly. Some don't even reply after a week. Problem now is: When I realized about this issue, there were already hundreds if not thousands of sites which has been used by the hacker. Literally tens of thousands of sites has been crawled by google and the hacked or scripted pages with my company brand title, keywords, description has already being index by google. Routinely everyday I am removing and disavowing. But it's just so much of them now indexed by Google. Question: 1. What is the best way now moving forward for me to resolve this? 2. Disavow links and domain. Does disavowing a domain = all the links from the same domain are disavow? 3. Can anyone recommend me SEO company which dealt with such issue before and successfully rectified similar issues? Note: SEAGM is company branded keyword 5CGkSYM.png

Thanks for your help!

Page Indexing increase when I request Google Site Link demote
Hi there, Has anyone seen a page crawling increase in Google Web Master Tools when they have requested a site link demotion? I did this around the 23rd of March, the next day I started to see page crawling rise and rise and report a very visible spike in activity and to this day is still relatively high. From memory I have asked about this in SEOMOZ Q&A a couple of years ago in and was told that page crawl activity is a good thing - ok fine, no argument. However at the nearly in the same period I have noticed that my primary keyword rank for my home page has dropped away to something in the region of 4th page on Google US and since March has stayed there. However the exact same query in Google UK (Using SEOMOZ Rank Checker for this) has remained the same position (around 11th) - it has barely moved. I decided to request an undemote on GWT for this page link and the page crawl started to drop but not to the level before March 23rd. However the rank situation for this keyword term has not changed, the content on our website has not changed but something has come adrift with our US ranks. Using Open Site Explorer not one competitor listed has a higher domain authority than our site, page authority, domain links you name it but they sit there in first page. Sorry the above is a little bit of frustration, this question is not impulsive I have sat for weeks analyzing causes and effects but cannot see why this disparity is happening between the 2 country ranks when it has never happened for this length of time before. Ironically we are still number one in the United States for a keyword phrase which I moved away from over a month ago and do not refer to this phrase at all on our index page!! Bizarre. Granted, site link demotion may have no correlation to the KW ranking impact but looking at activities carried out on the site and timing of the page crawling. This is the only sizable factor I can identify that could be the cause. Oh! and the SEOMOZ 'On-Page Optimization Tool' reports that the home page gets an 'A' for this KW term. I have however this week commented out the canonical tag for the moment in the index page header to see if this has any effect. Why? Because as this was another (if not minor) change I employed to get the site to an 'A' credit with the tool. Any ideas, help appreciated as to what could be causing the rank differences. One final note the North American ranks initially were high, circa 11-12th but then consequently dropped away to 4th page but not the UK rankings, they witnessed no impact. Sorry one final thing, the rank in the US is my statistical outlier, using Google Analytics I have an average rank position of about 3 across all countries where our company appears for this term. Include the US and it pushes the average to 8/9th. Thanks David

Is it something really obvious or is off-site link building all thats missing?
I'm trying to get a client ranked for the keyword Quaich and its like pulling teeth 😞 This keyword performs brilliantly for adwords but I've never got it ranked at all in googles SERPs. Last November I created this page: http://kiltmakers.co.uk/quaich Which ranks as A with seo-moz but still nothing. I'm still a newbie to SEO work but can someone point me in the right direction? Is it just the domain authority that the issue - should I switch my focus to link building off-site?

How is my competition causing bad crawl errors and links on my site
We have a compeditor who we are in a legal dispute at the moment, and they are using under hand tactics to cause us to have bad links and crawl errors and i do not know how they are doing it or how to stop it. The crawl errors we are getting is the site having two urls together, for example www.testsite.com/www.testsite.com and other errors are pages that we do not even have or pages that are spelt wrong or have a dot after the page name. We have been told off a number of people in our field that this has also happened to them and i would like to know how they are doing it so we can have this stopped Since they have been doing this our traffic has gone down by half
