Issue with Cached pages
-
I have a client who has a three domains:
budgetkits.co.uk
prosocceruk.co.uk
cheapfootballkits.co.ukBudget Kits is not active but Pro Soccer and Cheap Football Kits are.
The issue is when you do site:budgetkits.co.uk on Google it brings back results. If you click on the link it goes to page saying website doesn't exist which is correct but if you click on cached it shows you a page from prosocceruk.co.uk or cheapfootballkits.co.uk. The cached pages are very recent by a couple of days ago to a week.
The first result brings up www.budgetkits.co.uk/rainwear but the cached page is www.prosocceruk.co.uk/rainwear
The third result brings up www.budgetkits.co.uk/kids-football-kits but the cached page is http://www.cheapfootballkits.co.uk
The history of this issue is that budgetkits.co.uk was its own website 7 years ago and then it used to point at prosocceruk.co.uk after that but it no longer does for about two months. All files have been deleted from budgetkits.co.uk so it is just a domain.
Any help with this would be very much appreciated as I have not seen this kind of issue before.

I'm not sure. It could be that on the other domain the brand name or some similarity existed, and that is what Google is using to tie them together.
Along with using the 410, make sure to place the proper robots data on the page, meaning use "no-archive" so the search engines always keep display the most recent result.
- NOINDEX tag tells Google not to index a specific page
- NOFOLLOW tag tells Google not to follow the links on a specific page
- NOARCHIVE tag tells Google not to store a cached copy of your page
- NOSNIPPET tag tells Google not to show a snippet (description) under your Google listing, it will also not show a cached link in the search results

Many thanks for responding
The issue with the domain is it has a lack of trust and I think it has been spammed in the past so doesn't want it affecting the other domains.
I am happy to do a 410 and I have explained this to the customer so you have clarified what I was thinking.
Do you know why the third result would cache cheapfootballkits.co.uk even though these two domains have no connection.

I understand that the client may not want that, but it may need to be explained that redirects are probably a good idea.
I have a few questions:
1. Do the old domains have links pointing at them, or any type of domain authority, domain age, etc? Might be worth it to park the domains on top of your new one, and do a redirect so Google doesn't index them both.2. Why does the client not want the old domains pointed to the new one? If you still own the old domain, you can install the 410 code on the page, and request that it gets removed from Google in webmaster tools.
A brief update on what a 410 is:
"The Web server (running the Web site) thinks that the URL requested by the client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) is no longer available from that system. This is not a 'never heard of it' response, but a 'does not live here any more' response.""The 410 error is primarily intended to assist the task of Web maintenance by notifying the client system that the resource is intentionally unavailable and that the Web server wants remote links to the URL to be removed. Such an event is common for URLs which are effectively dead i.e. were deliberately time-limited or simply orphaned. The Web server has complete discretion as to how long it provides the 410 error before switching to another error such as 404. "
We had to use this on pages that kept showing up for a local contractor. Once they were submitted to Google, we saw them removed within a week.
"When to use a 410 gone – error code?
If you intend to remove a page or file from your website and you very deliberately want visitors and search engines to know that it is really gone, you should use the 410 gone – error code. If you do not, and rather just delete the page or file, the visitors to your site will get a 404 – not found error which means that the URL you requested has nothing there. This should really ONLY be used if you are sure your intention is to tell the world this file is no longer here and to tell the search engines to take it out of their index."

The client doesn't want this domain pointing so that is why we have not done any 301's. The strangest part is that the third result goes to cheapfootballkits.co.uk and these two have not been pointed to each other or had any connection.

Hi Paul,
Is there a specific reason why you won't redirect the pages from www.budgetkits.co.uk/rainwear to it's new location. What I think is happening here is that Google thinks that these pages could still come online after a while as it's not giving a proper response code. If you would redirect the old pages to the new one (301), then they probably will stop indexing them and turn to their new location.

An informational product page AND a shop page (for same brand)
Hi all, This is my first foray into e-commerce SEO. I'm working with a new client who sells upscale eBikes online. Since his products are expensive, he wants to have informational pages about the brands he sells eg. www.example.com/brand. However these brands are also category pages for his online shop eg. www.example.com/shop/brand I'm worried about keyword cannibalization and adding an extra step/click to get to the shop (right now the navigational menu takes you to the information page and from there you have to click to get to the shop) I'm pretty sure it would make more sense to have ONE killer shopping page that includes all the brand information but I want to be 100% sure before I advise him to take this big step. Thoughts?

Similar pages on a site
Hi I think it was at BrightonSEO where PI DataMetrics were talking about similar pages on a website can cause rankings to drop for your main page. This has got me thinking. if we have a category about jumpers so: example.com/jumpers but then our blog has a category about jumpers, where we write all about jumpers etc which creates a category page example.com/blog/category/jumpers, so these blog category pages have no index put on them to stop them ranking in Google? Thanks in Advance for any tips. Andy

150+ Pages of URL Parameters - Mass Duplicate Content Issue?
Hi we run a large e-commerce site and while doing some checking through GWT we came across these URL parameters and are now wondering if we have a duplicate content issue. If so, we are wodnering what is the best way to fix them, is this a task with GWT or a Rel:Canonical task? Many of the urls are driven from the filters in our category pages and are coming up like this: page04%3Fpage04%3Fpage04%3Fpage04%3F (See the image for more). Does anyone know if these links are duplicate content and if so how should we handle them? Richard I7SKvHS

On-Page Problem
Hello Mozzers, A friend has a business website and the on-page stuff is done really bad. He wants to rank for: conference room furnishing, video conference, digital signage. (Don't worry about the keywords, it's just made up for an example.) For these three services he has a page: hiswebsite.com/av AV stands for audio and video and is the h1. If you click on one of the service, the url doesn't change. Like if you click on video conference, just the text changes, the url stays /av. All his targeted pages got an F Grade, I am not surprised, the services titles are in . Wouldn't it be a lot better to make an own page for every service with a targeted keyword, like hiswebsite.com/video-conference All this stuff is on /av, how will a 301 resirect work to all the service pages, does this make sense? Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Duplicated rel=author tags (x 3) on WordPress pages, any issue with this?
Hi,
Technical SEO | | jeffwhitfield
We seem to have duplicated rel=author tags (x 3) on WordPress pages, as we are using Yoast WordPress SEO plugin which adds a rel=author tag into the head of the page and Fancier Author Box plugin which seems to add a further two rel=author tags toward the bottom of the page. I checked the settings for Fancier Author Box and there doesn't seem to be the option to turn rel=author tags off; we need to keep this plugin enabled as we want the two tab functionality of the author bio and latest posts. All three rel=author tags seem to be correctly formatted and Google Structured Data Testing Tool shows that all authorship rel=author markup is correct; is there any issue with having these duplicated rel=author tags on the WordPress pages?
I tried searching the Q&A but couldn't find anything similar enough to what I'm asking above. Many thanks in advance and kind regards.0 -
Pages not being cached have a negative effect?
Hi all! I look after a website where it's been discovered a section of the website has the noarchive robots meta tag active on it causing it to not get cached but has been indexed. Out of curiosity has anyone seen any negative effects from Google for having pages that aren't cached? It's not the strongest section on the website so makes it tricky to judge myself but interested if anyone had any thoughts on the matter. Cheers,

Canonical Issue?
Hi, I was using the On Page Report Card Tool here on SEOMOZ for the following page: http://www.priceline.com/eventi-a-kimpton-hotel-new-york-city-new-york-ny-1614979-hd.hotel-reviews-hotel-guides and it claims there is a canonical issue or improper use of it. I looked at the element and it seems to be fine: <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.priceline.com/eventi-a-kimpton-hotel-new-york-city-new-york-ny-1614979-hd.hotel-reviews-hotel-guides" /> Can you spot the issue and how it would be fixed? Thanks. Eddy

Wrong Page Ranking
Higher-level page with more power getting pushed out by weaker page in the SERPs for an important keyword. I don't care about losing the weaker page. Should I: 404 the weaker page and wait for Google to (hopefully) replace it with the stronger page? 301 the weaker page to the stronger page? NOTE: Due to poor communication between content team and myself, the weak and strong pages have similar title tags (i.e, "lawsuits" and "litigation")
