ECWID Ecommerce Sites. No Custom URLS?
-
Is there any way possible to be able to name product urls in website that use ECWID for their ecommerce? They have long and "dirty" urls. For example this running boards site: http://www.runningboards4less.com/general-motors#!/~/product/category=6593890&id=28043027
Isn't this hurting the overall SEO of the site? Especially product pages?

I would suggest Prestashop, but I am not partial by any means. I develop exclusively with it and I am one of their moderators. Magento is also good too. I think one of the biggest considerations is what the store does in business, how many products, and what features do they need that are not in the default package of the e-commerce program. All platforms have good features, but everyone has features others do not.
-
What would you suggest as an alternative to ECWID? One of the web design companies we partner with uses them. I am seeking alternatives to recommend.
-
Honestly I don't know. I really thought development had stopped on it a couple of years ago, but apparently it hasn't. I honestly don't know if they have the ability to change it since it would be a huge core modification for them.

Thank you for taking a moment to answer my question. I gave you a thumbs up and "Good Answer". Why do people use ECWID with such a disadvantage? You would think that ECWID would change that. Oh well. I guess I will just have to go on being frustrated. It would also be nice if you could have descriptions under items for ECWID pages. "Short" descriptions on the multi product pages. But with ECWID it only allows a link and Sku....

I would consider it important, but unfortunately Ecwid does not support it because of how the software uses ajax to build pages. The best tip I can give is to try to rewrite the urls manually and see if the software still works.

I want to create a 301 redirect on a WordPress site, nothing's working...
Hello all, I'm hoping someone out there can give me a hand with this. I'm trying to modify my .htaccess file so that the site will go from maxcarnagemusic.com to www.maxcarnagemusic.com and also, so viewers will be redirected to www.maxcarnagemusic.com/home when they try to access the site. I've tried a few different things, including adding the 301 redirect plugin for Wordpress, but nothing seems to work. Can someone out there show/tell me how to create an htaccess file that will execute as much. I apologize in advance, my Apache experience is very, very limited. Thank you all in advance!

Do Google Fonts Slow Down Your Site?
Hi Guys,
Web Design | | jeeyer
I just did a webpage speed test on http://www.webpagetest.org to see how our site is performing.
I noticed that an exteral URL called fonts.gstatic.com has a "huge" impact on our sites loading time. See a screen here: http://monosnap.com/image/z6drzC2ELoJ48d1rM0Tmtuszl3pFpH#
An overview can be seen here: http://monosnap.com/image/9hofUpr5Ld8D7mi7zyaJmGFIGhpBsY# All our scores are green and A (finally!) but I was a bit concerned when I saw the outcome of the pagespeedtest regarding the fonts.
When I load a page on my pc I indeed notice that the text content is usally quite slow in showing up, pops up afer a few seconds. Is this a know problem and Is this something I need to fix? If so what is the best approach? Looking forward on your thoughts!

Why do site links appear under one keyword and not another? Any ideas?
Hi everyone, I have a client whose website is doing the strangest thing. When I search the branded keyword (the company name), Google doesn't show any site links under the result. However, when I search for the company name plus Inc., I do get site links. Now, the website is ranking first in both searches, so that's not the issue. And, as near as I can tell, the site only contains one or two uses of the company name plus the word "inc." Most of the text on the page and all of the meta data only uses the company name, and most of the links that connect to the site use only the company name as well. Even the Who Is for the site doesn't use the term "inc." And ideas what might be going on? I know Google says that the process is still automated but for the life of me I can't figure out what kind of automated process would result in these results. Thanks! Megan (Rebecca's minion)

ECommerce and microdata
Last year I rolled my own online shop and I included schema.org microdata for all the products. My Google ranking continued to improve during that period, but I was doing a number of improvements, so I can't say how much was due to the microdata. My store continues to grow so I moved to an eCommerce solution. I opted to go with Volusion. Much to my surprise, about the only SEO feature they have implemented is SEO friendly URLs. They have not implemented microdata, which is pretty surprising given that all their sites are geared towards products. I would think it would be very easy for them to span the product name, description, price, etc, with a product schema. I called CoreCommerce, a Volusion competitor, and they have not implemented microdata either. Why are these large eCommerce providers ignoring microdata? Are there eCommerce solutions that have implemented microdata? Do large online retailers like Amazon and Buy use microdata? Is there any data that shows the SEO benefits of implementing microdata for an online store? Best,

Bar Codes for Event Sites
A client is requesting bar codes for simple tracking of event attendees. Their need is to be able to verify at the door someone has registered and then have that data link to the registrant to show who did/did not attend, etc. We looked at QR code solutions (seems bar code makes more sense at this point) and now are at a point where we need input from any who have experience with either system and could potentially make a recommendation. A person would sign up for this once a year event (no charge, informational) on the site and be able to print off their registration ticket to bring to the event. If it could also be downloaded to iPhone/Android that would be a plus as well. When they come through the door the code is scanned and registrant is in. Simple. They currently keep a database of past attendees and only use it for general area the attendees are from and how many show over time, etc. Since we do not want to reinvent the wheel, we were hoping a mozzer might have insight. thanks, Robert

E Commerce Product URL SEO
Hi, first question here. In response to Paddy's wonderful article and Rand's related article from 09 I've found myself asking this question. "www.home.co.uk/product" or "www.home.co.uk/category/product" As I'm currently reviewing the structure for so many of our e com sites the article comes at a great time. I'm going for home/category/product so I can optimise for a category, as category based searches are quite high and competitive. Yes some products can appear in 2 categories but I'm combating it with 301's or image based links. What are your thoughts.

Why is site not being indexed by Google, and not showing on a crawl test??
On a site we developed of which .com is forwarded to .net domain, we quit getting crawled by google on about the 20th of Feb. Now when we try to run a crawl test on either url, we get There was an error fetching this page. Error description For some reason the page returned did not describe itself as an html page. It could be possible that the url is serving an image, rss feed, pdf, or xml file of some sort. The crawl tool does not currently report metrics on this type of data. Our other sites are fine and this was up to this date. We took out noodp, noydir today as the only thing we could think of. Site is on WP cms.
