E-commerce customer registration fields during account sign up
-
I work for an online print company and recently we were considering adding a field titled "industry" so that we could figure out what industry our customers are coming from. Has anyone seen anything either in favor or against adding this field during the customers account registration process. We understand that less is best however feel that it is important to better serve our customers. Any information on this subject would be very useful.

A different thought here. Since you are doing printing as the service, would some things (especially business cards) be able to give a good clue as to industry without having to ask people?
-
I agree with Andy on the matter of completing your entire profile. The only way a customer would complete a profile is if, completing the profile would be beneficial to them in some shape or form.
Regarding the industry field on the sign-up form I would go ahead and give it a shot. You will have plenty of data on sign-ups without the field and be able to compare the results. I would advise looking at your current sign-up form conversions before you advance further.
Personally I have used the industry field for webinar sign-ups and find no difference in conversions with or without them. Also, I would use a drop down unless you a ton of options. In that case I would implement an auto-complete field.
I use:
- First Name
- Last Name
- Industry
- Company (Not Always Used)
Short is better but the only way to find out what is too short is to test!
All the best,

I don't know if this is possible, but couldn't you offer 5% off your next order if you complete your profile.
This way you get a second order and a complete profile of your customer.
This way you are not reducing the chance of people not completing, increasing the number of repeat purchases and get the information and potentially more information that just sector.
I would be willing to complete my profile if there was an incentive, but as don't know the platform you are using, I don't know if this is possible in your case.

My thought was that if we had it on the initial sign up as an option/not mandatory that maybe they would fill it out as opposed to if it is in their account they may never fill it out and just forget it all together.
when you do come across this filed {Industry} do you fill it out or select the industry via drop down or would you skip it?

Hello,
Neil Patel has written an in-depth article about it here,
http://www.quicksprout.com/2013/01/31/how-to-optimize-contact-forms-for-conversions/
Summary: Less form field = Higher conversion rates.
Maybe a good idea to split test the form over a 2 month period and check the results.

I would agree less is better, I've seen numerous reports over the years which say the more you ask, the higher the drop off.
Couldn't you get the customer to complete this field after purchase. Either at the end of the checkout, or follow up email.
Why not on the confirmation email ask them then, or in their account section. Anyone who doesn't complete it, leave it as general, and for everyone else you can target specifically.
I would highly recommend, putting the absolute minimal on the sign up form.

Custom HTML or WordPress, it's Time to Decide
Today I start the face to face interviews with website companies. So far most have pushed WordPress, few have offered either and one insisted on Joomla. Our 50+ products and services are primarily customized, so we sell -10 on our shopping cart. We rely primarily on organic Google rankings, SEO and content is critical. What do you, my fellow Mozzers, recommend for our next website platform for our mobile world and Google friendliness? TY, KJr

Online Catalog (E-commerce like) Wordpress Themes?
I'm currently looking for a Wordpress theme similar to e-commerce/shopping websites like ebay. I'm planning to put up a buy and sell site for shoes where people can upload shoe listings on their own.. The site we're planning doesn't have a buy/checkout button and paypal integration so it will look like more of an online catalog and not a shopping cart. We will just add a contact number/email in the product listing so a buyer can contact and personally meet the seller. Let me know if this can be done in Wordpress + e-commerce plugins. I would also like to know if there's a WP plugin that will allow users to use Facebook or Twitter to login/sign up in our website/platform. Let me know if this is possible in Wordpress by installing a plugin. Thanks in advance!

E-Commerce Website Architecture - Cannibalization between Product Categories and Blog Categories?
Hi, I have an e-commerce site that sells laptops. My main landing pages and category pages are as follows:
Web Design | | BeytzNet
"Toshiba Laptops", "Samsung Laptops", etc. We also run a WP blog with industry news.
The posts are divided into categories which are basically as our landing pages.
The posts themselves usually link to the appropriate e-commerce landing page.
For example: a post about a new Samsung Laptop which is categorized in the blog under "Samsung Laptops" will naturally link somewhere inside to the "samsung laptops" ecommerce landing page. Is that good or do the categories on the blog cannibalize my more important e-commerce section landing pages? Thanks0 -
Question #2: All of my INTERNAL links in OSE are being indexed from http://www.e.com/default.asp, and all my EXTERNAL links are linked to http://www.e.com/ am I getting a fraction of the link juice because of that?????
Hey guys, sorry for the really long question, but it appears that I am losing between 50 and 75 % of my link juice to my internal pages. In OSE all main category links (left sidebar) are being indexed from the URL that includes default.asp, even though NONE of my external links include that: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommonthread.com%2FSulky-Thread-s%2F78.htm If you check the PA for http://www.uncommonthread.com/: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommonthread.com%2F You see that it is practically double the PA of http://www.uncommonthread.com/default.asp: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommonthread.com%2FDefault.asp **Also, non of my internal menu links are being indexed. ** Look at the menu on this page: http://www.uncommonthread.com/Sulky-Thread-s/78.htm and then look at the OSE information here for the "invisible thread" item from the menu on the page above^^^: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uncommonthread.com%2FSulky-monofilament-s%2F54.htm Thanks SOOO much! Pre-thumbs and thanks to anyone that can lend me a seconds worth of advice! Thanks again for your time, Tyler A.

How many sites on one hosting account?
How many sites is safe to house on one hosting provider? I use BlueHost and they advertise unlimited domains, but I'm not sure what the negative side effects might be from hosting too many on one hosting service. If it matter at all, I'm using WordPress to build my sites. Pros and Cons?

Custom 404 Page Indexing
Hi - We created a custom 404 page based on SEOMoz recommendations. But.... the page seems to be receiving traffic via organic search. Does it make more sense to set this page as "noindex" by its metatag?

Does listing my customer's address, phone number, and a contact form on "every page" count as duplicate content that they'd be penalized for?
I work with small local businesses (like Tree Farms, Feed Stores, Counselors, etc) doing web design, seo, etc. I encourage them to have their contact information visible at all times on their websites. I'm also delving into the world of contact forms. I want to have this info on every page - is this detrimental? Here's an example: http://www.trinityescape.net/marriage-couples-counselors-therapy-clermont-florida/ Thank you!
