Do XML sitemaps need to be manually resubmitted every time they are changed?
-
I have been noticing lately that quite a few of my client's sites are showing sitemap errors/warnings in Google webmaster tools, despite the fact that the issue with the the sitemap (e.g a URL that we have blocked in robots.txt) was fixed several months earlier.
Google talks about resubmitting sitemaps here where it says you can resubmit your sitemap when you have made changes to it, I just find it somewhat strange that the sitemap is not automatically re-scanned when Google crawls a website. Does anyone know if the sitemap is automatically rescanned and only webmaster tools is not updated, or am I going to have to manually resubmit or ping Google with the sitemap each time a change is made?
It would be interesting to know other people's experiences with this

Hi
We submit our xml site maps daily automatically anyway. Leave a copy on the site to be crawled, but by submitting the site map it ensures that the Google Index is upto date without waiting for it to be crawled.
There are plenty of bolt on sitemap generators which will automatically send the sitemaps, without manual intervention.

Need explanation of Schema
Can someone explain me what it is and what is it used for. From my understanding it is something used by computers to understand language. In other words it is what you can say about an entity. For example a person works, is born somewhere but if I write Mr X flies to as human we do understand but as a computer the computer doesn't understand. Is that what schema is for ? telling me what I can say about an entity using specific verbs so that computers can understand. Thank you,

Do I need to do 301s in this situation?
We have an e-commerce site built on Magento 2. We launched a few months ago, and had about 2K categories. The categories got indexed in Google for the most part. Shortly after launch, we decided to go with SLI for search and navigation because the native search/navigation was too slow given our database. The navigation pages are now hosted navigation pages; meaning, the URLs have changed and they are now hosted by SLI. I have done 301s for the most popular categories, but I didn't do 301s for all categories as we have to go through each category one-by-one and map it to the correct navigation page. Our new category sitemap only lists the new SLI category URLs. Will the fact that we have not 301'd all of our former categories hurt us as far as SEO? Do I have to do 301 redirects for all former category pages?

Sitemap and content question
This is our primary sitemap https://www.samhillbands.com/sitemaps/sitemap.xml We have a about 750 location based URL's that aren't currently linked anywhere on the site. https://www.samhillbands.com/sitemaps/locations.xml Google is indexing most of the URL because we submitted the locations sitemap directly for indexing. Thoughts on that?  Should we just create a page that contains all of the location links and make it live on the site? Should we remove the locations sitemap from separate indexing...because of duplicate content? # Sitemap Type Processed Issues Items Submitted Indexed --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- 1 /sitemaps/locations.xml Sitemap May 10, 2016 - Web 771 648 2 /sitemaps/sitemap.xml Sitemap index May 8, 2016 - Web 862 730

Have thousands of 404s with backlinks. Should I redirect them all at once or over time?
These error pages are being redirected to the most relevant page, not mass redirected to the home page. Thanks for reading!

Using author on every page of website?
I'm currently get to grips with schema and one thing im using is author on my blog posts and seeing my photo etc on organic searches which are related. I see one of my competitors is using author on every page on their website, not just blog posts etc. Are there any recommendation when it should be used? Should it be site wide or is it really intended for blog posts etc? Would it be wrong for me to use on every page of my website as one of my businesses is myself as a lone person? This is what you get when searching for driving lessons in just about any town! https://www.google.co.uk/#gs_rn=15&gs_ri=psy-ab&tok=LS_DOrAHswmHC9_8AJZEJA&suggest=p&pq=driving instructor brighton&cp=20&gs_id=1k2&xhr=t&q=driving+lessons+crawley&es_nrs=true&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&oq=driving+lessons+craw&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47244034,d.d2k&fp=45c2f917e11bca99&biw=1680&bih=843 Any comments welcome! Need some feedback on organize media
I work at a large church and we have an unique problem we're trying to solve. We have a lot of media on our site. We have messages from every Sunday, plus mid-week services, and other events all on our website. We have the messages organized into series, but would like to somehow organize these messages into topics as well, or some other way to organize them better. We have over 5000 pieces of media! Here's a link to our current media page....does anyone have any experience working with this much content, and how we can do better? By the way, SEO / organic traffic is secondary to helping users on our site find content better. We are also in the process of changing over our site search to google search to help give users better search results. But our end game is to help user find our content better. Thanks for your help!

How to stop pages being crawled from xml feed?
We have a site that has an xml feed going out to many other sites.Â

The xml feed is behind a password protected page so cannot use a cannonical link to point back to original url. How do we stop the pages being crawled on all of the sites using the xml feed? as with hundreds using it after launch it will cause instant duplicate content issues? Thanks0 -
Are there certain times of the day that it is better to update content or blogs? How do I find out what time is best for a particular site?
Trying to figure out how to best optimize timing of new content... including blogs and other on page content?
