Optimum Word Count for Home Page Text
-
We operate a commercial real estate web site (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) in New York City. Our home page text is about 500 words. Currently the home page text is of a promotional nature and not very engaging.
We are attempting to write a check list for companies that are seeking to lease commercial space and make the text very useful, practical and engaging. However we are having difficulty covering all the bases with less than 1,000 words. If the home page text has 1,000-1,300 words is that detrimental from an SEO point of view? On the plus side I would think this would allow us to include several secondary keyword terms and to add plurals and variations of the two or three top phrases.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks, Alan Rosinsky

I'm in agreement with Chris on this one as well.
That said, your checklist is an excellent idea, just don't put it on the home page. Instead use the home page to explain why your company is different from all the competitors you have alluded to, and direct them to a separate page with the checklist. Make it compelling. "Get real-world, practical advice in the form of a checklist" or "Avoid over-spending using our requirements checklist" or something else that clearly states what's in it for them.

I like your checklist approach and think it adds value for users of your site. Could you use it to generate leads? A "call to action" widget of some type that would send your checklist to users who leave their email. It's a pretty common scheme and maybe worn out, but I still go for it if the information sounds intriguing enough.
I know that doesn't answer your keyword question but I tend to agree with Chris that too much text on a home page can be overwhelming and cause a viewer to check out. I think you use the homepage as an overview an to "set the hook".
Nice site!

Thanks.
Curious about your reasoning. If the new text is useful and incorporates the right keywords what is the down side of replacing the existing content?
In terms of brand I can't very well compete against companies that are spending a million dollars a year on SEO and have a staff of 25.
Offering some very practical advice in a general sort of way on the home page may be a way to differentiate myself as no one else is taking that approach.
I would think if the new text is useful rather than generic it would increase engagement. However I am a real estate broker, not an SEO expert so I can't say.
Any thoughts???
Thanks, Alan

my feeling is that you're better off with what you have now. Maybe put the checklist on its own page.

Hi Chris:
My firm is competing against many large companies with very developed brands such as www.42floors.com, www.mrofficespace.com and www.propertyshark.com.
As a one man band it is a challenge to compete.
I am trying to differentiate myself by creating a brief "My Office Space Checklist" on the home page. Offering visitors practical advice; a series of pointers on Manhattan commercial real estate that will give the visitor a flavor of what the interior pages contain. I am hoping to make the information useful enough that visitors will want to read it. No one else is taking this approach so I am hoping it will generate interest, improve ranking and differentiate me.
Attached is a very rough draft, only conceptual, needs, lots and lots of work.
Do you think this could be effective?
Thanks, Alan

Alan,
More text on the home page certainly won't be detrimental to your SEO but it might be said that 1000 words is too much for the visitor to absorb. Even 500 words on the home page is more than most will read. Typically, the home page is seen as more of a starting point on a domain where the visitor can be told about the brand and given direction on where information lies within the site.

Is it ok to repeat a (focus) keyword used on a previous page, on a new page?
I am cataloguing the pages on our website in terms of which focus keyword has been used with the page. I've noticed that some pages repeated the same keyword / term. I've heard that it's not really good practice, as it's like telling google conflicting information, as the pages with the same keywords will be competing against each other. Is this correct information? If so, is the alternative to use various long-winded keywords instead? If not, meaning it's ok to repeat the keyword on different pages, is there a maximum recommended number of times that we want to repeat the word? Still new-ish to SEO, so any help is much appreciated! V.

How long will old pages stay in Google's cache index. We have a new site that is two months old but we are seeing old pages even though we used 301 redirects.
Two months ago we launched a new website (same domain) and implemented 301 re-directs for all of the pages. Two months later we are still seeing old pages in Google's cache index. So how long should I tell the client this should take for them all to be removed in search?

Home page vs inner page?
do you believe that the advantage of targeting a search term on the home page is now worse off than before? as I understand it ctr is a big factor now And as far as i can see if two pages are equal on page etc the better ctr will win out, the issue with the home page is the serp stars cannot be used hence the ctr on a product page will be higher? I feel if you where able to get a home page up quicker (1 year instead of two) you still lost out in the end due to the product page winning on ctr? do you think this is correct?

Different text position on mobile and desktop page
Hi there, We have product category descriptions in our webshop, with one smal difference: desktop: the first paragraf is at the top above the products with a scroll down to the other paragrafs below the products mobile: the whole text is below the products I am wondering whether it is allright in regards of the mobile first index, or should we have exactly the same paragraf split on the desktop and mobile version? Eg. dadum.pl/zabawki Thanks in advance for your opinions. Isabelle

Merging Pages and SEO
Hi, We are redesigning our website the following way: Before: Page A with Content A, Page B with Content B, Page C with Content C, etc
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | viatrading1
e.g. one page for each Customer Returns, Overstocks, Master Case, etc
Now: Page D with content A + B + C etc.
e.g. one long page containing all Product Conditions, one after the other So we are merging multiples pages into one.
What is the best way to do so, so we don't lose traffic? (or we lose the minimum possible) e.g. should we 301 Redirect A/B/C to D...?
Is it likely that we lose significant traffic with this change? Thank you,0 -
Duplicate page content on numerical blog pages?
Hello everyone, I'm still relatively new at SEO and am still trying my best to learn. However, I have this persistent issue. My site is on WordPress and all of my blog pages e.g page one, page two etc are all coming up as duplicate content. Here are some URL examples of what I mean: http://3mil.co.uk/insights-web-design-blog/page/3/ http://3mil.co.uk/insights-web-design-blog/page/4/ Does anyone have any ideas? I have already no indexed categories and tags so it is not them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Should I merge these pages
I have this business and am not sure if I should have a separate page for all of the different roofing subservices or if i should put them all on one page. Even though they are separate, but related services, I feel they could end up competing against one another If I merge them I will also have more related and keyword rich content on one page that I could focus my efforts on.

How do I best optimise a page with 3 keywords that all contain 1 common word?
I am new to this so still getting to grips with a few things. I have a page here that I want to optimise for 3 keyword phrases. Towels, Egyptian Cotton Towels, Personalised Towels http://www.towelsrus.co.uk/towels/catlist_fnct561.htm SEOmoz reports a huge number of instances of the word towels overall. Title 3 URL 1 Meta Desc 5 H1 3 H2-4 1 Body 83 B / Strong 1 IMG ALT 11 Total Keyword Usage for this Page = 108How could i restructure meta tags and descriptions to still rank for these terms but reduce the level the word towels? Similarly as this is a category how can I reduce the term towels from other on page links? Also any extra advice regarding on page optimisation would be greatly appreciated to help our efforts
