404s effecting crawl rate?
-
We made a change to our site where we all of a sudden we are creating a large number of 404 pages. Is this effecting the crawl/indexing rate?
Currently we've submitted 3.4 million pages, have over 834K indexed but have over and 330K pages not found. Since the large increase in 404s we've noticed a decrease in pages crawled per day. I found this Q & A in Webmasters (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/05/do-404s-hurt-my-site.html) but it seems like the 404s should not have an effect. Is this article out of date?
What do you think fellow Moz-ers? Is this a problem?
-
It's not a problem, just fix those as soon as you can. And yes, it does affect crawl rate from what I've seen.
-
That article you mention is very up to date.
but if you got "hit" by Google bot several times a day for those pages that now you return a 404 response code you will see a decrease in pages crawled per day since once Google sees a 404 response code it will not visit / hit that page that often aftre that...
-
Yes i've seen this numerous of times. Is it just 404's are are there also things like DNS playing along?
But if the amount of 404's jump up really high then for sure google turns down the speed. i guess this gives you some air to fix it in time.

Geo ip filtering / Subdomain can't be crawled
My client has "load balancing" site traffic in the following way: domain: www.example.com traffic from US IP redirected to usa.example.com traffic from non-US IP redirected to www2.example.com The reason for doing this is that site contents on the www2 contains herbal medicine info banned by FDA."usa.example.com" is a "cleaned" site. Using HK IP, when I google an Eng keyword, I can see that www.example.com is indexed. When googling a Chi keyword, nothing is indexed - neither the domain or www2 subdomain. From Google Search Console, it shows a Dell Sonicwall geo ip filtering alert for www2 (Connection initiated from country: United States). GSC data also confirms that www2 has never been indexed by Google. Questions: Is geo ip filtering the very reason why www2 isn't indexed? What should I do in order to get www2 to be indexed? Thanks guys!

How do I handle soft 404s on category pages?
I have a site that provides a service where listings are displayed on site for 30 days, then they expire. These listings are categorized by type. On occasion, categories have no listings available, and Google Webmaster Tools is listing them as Soft 404 errors. It's not possible to remove these categories and 301 redirect to another page. Any suggestions on how to work around the soft 404s?

I have 3500 pages crawled by Google, - why is SEOMOZ only able to crawl 400 of these ?
I added my site almost two weeks ago to the PRO DashBoard, and so far only 404 pages has been crawled, - but I know for a fact that there is 3500 pages that should be crawled. Other search engines has no problem in crawling and indexing these pages, so what can be wrong here ?

SEOMoz Crawling Errors
I recently implemented a blog using WordPress on our website. I didn't use WordPress as the CMS for the rest of our site just the blog portion. So as an example I installed Wordpress in http://www.mysite/blog/" not in the root. My error report in SEOMoz went from 0 to 22e. The Moz bot or crawler that SEOMoz uses is reporting a ton of 4xx errors to strang links that shouldn't exist anywhere on the site. Example: Good link - http://www.mysite/products.html Bad link reported by SEOMoz - http://www.mysite/blog/my-first-post/products.html I've also noticed that my page speed as become much slower as reported by Google. Does anybody know what could be happening here? I know that typically it's better to install WordPress in the root and use it to control the entire site but I was under the gun to get a blog out. Thanks
