Will a cool mapping app be a good idea?
-
We have come up with an idea to add a cool mapping app to our website. This will enable users to find locations to be able to play a range of games in their local vicinity, such as pool/table tennis/pinball/arcade games/foosball.
Players and venues will be able to add locations to our mapping system. They can add a review, details, what machines/equipment is there, add photos. The owner can add any special offers or events.
Potential benefits:
- Community - finding places to play these games is hard. This would be great for everyone who loves these games to find new places to play them
- Engagement - visitors to our site will find this really useful and show us more love and respect
- SEO - this is the tricky bit...
If we ask venue owners to show a "We're listed!" logo on their homepage linking back to our mapping system will this be beneficial to us SEO wise?
Potential positives:
- lots of relevant homepage backlinks to us
- lots of relevant visitors to our mapping system who may choose to peruse the rest of our website
Potential issues:
- will this type of backlink be viewed poorly by Google?
- will the relatively low DA of the sites that will be linking to us weaken our link profile?
This will be a massive project for us to undertake, both financially to build the app but also for us to populate our maps by contacting all the relevant locations to invite them to participate.
Any insight, views or experience the Moz community can share with us on this would be gratefully received!

Not a problem! Good luck!

That's great feedback Monica! Thanks for your insight.
Our view was also that if it's good for the user then it should be good for SEO. It feel like the right thing to do.
We're hoping that word will get round each of these communities that we are trying to locate every location and they will pull together and help us out trying to find as many places as possible.
We hadn't thought about including the USA, but I guess we could! We'll see what would be involved.
Thanks again for your response.

I think that is an awesome idea. It is a very user friendly idea. Back in the day, the first mortgage company to add a mortgage interest rate calculator to their site experienced a tremendous increase in organic traffic and page rank. Tools like this are so helpful, therefore the engines like them. What is good for the seacher is good for the search engine.
To address your concerns -
• I don't believe you need to worry about a weakened link profile. There are two reasons for that, the first being these are going to be local businesses and that is never a bad thing to have. Secondly, even low quality links serve purposes. As long as these links generate traffic for your sight they are doing their job and you have nothing to worry about.
To address your positives-
• This is something I myself would use. You are right, unless you already know where the dwindling arcade is located, you can hardly find places like this.
• Getting local businesses to take part in this opportunity could significantly increase your traffic, which inevitably will increase your rankings. More impressions, more clicks, more traffic, = better rankings. The link juice passed from these other sites will help boost your authority. Sounds like you have a really great idea here. You will have to tell me when the app is ready, and if it will be available in the US
We added a generator sizing calculator to our site in September. We have several manufacturers who link to it and sometimes direct people to go to our site to use it. We have seen a 15% increase in organic traffic since. Apps, calculators, widgits, all great SEO tools.
Good Luck!

Weather providers in search results - any idea how to become one?
Hi, as google are displaying more and more weather forecasts within results, we'd like to explore whether there's a possibility of exposing our api to google to allow them to use us as one of the providers for the data. At the moment it appears they use weather.com, weather underground and maybe also accuweather (although I've not seen them mentioned for a while on there), but I'm not sure if this is some sort of commercial agreement, or whether it's simply that google have been given access to the api's from those providers in return for the link in the weather panel in the search results. Does anyone have any information about this sort of thing (I assume weather isn't unique in this respect), or know of any way to contact google and find out at all please? Thanks

Local SEO & Google Maps Question - 1 Company with Multiple Google Pages
Hey Mozzers! I'm working with a client who has 2 websites (different URLs completely), which one is for all parts and the other is for accessories only. They have multiple brick and mortar locations throughout the US and have done a nice job creating Google My Business pages for each and all verified. Their question is will it benefit them to create and verify another GMB page with same address, but place in "Suite B", a new phone number and apply the other URLs for the accessories site. The business name would also be different, but similar meaning Business 1 = ABC where as Business 2 = ABC Accessories. Their goal would be to try to have both rank or display to improve their local SEO. In theory it sounds like it will work given NAP would be satisfied within the GMB, but wanted to get the Moz community thoughts on this first before moving forward. Look forward to the replies. If I kill off the franchisee websites and create a corp SEO monster...will my Company's SEO suffer? Pros and Cons?
Our 25 franchisees sell one product of our 7 within the Corporate porfolio. We getting ready to release a brand new corp website employing all the best possible SEO practices. Since the franchisee's barely maintain their 3-page website...we are thinking of killing them off. We will create some market pages on the Corp side and continue to use HubSpot to pass along leads to the individual franchisees. Corporate has robust Content Marketing strategy in place. Any suggestions? Cases studies?

Will a 301 alter URL structures?
Hi all, I'd like to re-direct page A to page B. The problem is, under page A, I have a number of other pages. So, for example - www.website.co.uk/A/fake/website If I re-direct www.website.co.uk/A/ to www.website.co.uk/B/, would the sub-pages then become unusable as a URL? Or would they stay intact because I'm not changing the location of the pages, merely applying a re-direct to the folder that it's in. Cheers, Rhys

Is using emoji's in meta descriptions a good or bad idea ? - I haven't seen it used much hence my query
Hello Mozzers, We need to redo some of our meta descriptions as our CTR's are not to good. I've noticed one of my competitors using emoji's which I personally think looks pretty good. They are using the Phone icon and ticks - as calls to action etc However, I can't see hardly anyone else using them on general serps ...so I am wondering , is it a bad idea ? thanks Pete

Local Printing Company Moving to a new IP - Will Our Rankings Change
I operate a local print and direct mail company located in Houston called Catdi Printing (www.catdi.com)We do very well with our local rankings and rank 2 or 3 in our main keywords ( Houston Printing , Direct Mail Houston & eddm Houston ) We are looking to upgrade our online quoting and ordering system. The software is very expensive and the only way we can incorporate this new system is to move our site and redirect our domain. The new hosting provider is located in California and might even be hosted by Google but im not certain on this point. Our current host provider is Hostgator and they are based in Houston so im not this provides any benefit. I guess my main question is will this new change affect our overall regular and local rankings? I would hate to see our positions and ranking fall because of this change. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks CATDI

Adwords: Great ideas on low hanging fruit for hypnosis center
Hi, I want to start a very limited in funds adwords campaign to get signups for my newsletter, an example signup form is on the right of this page. I've advertised with adwords before. One additional thing I need is a spend $25 get $100 coupon, but I bet I can do a google search for that. The campaign will only be for the area in and around Boise, ID. It will only be for women who want to lose weight. My main investment is facebook ads to a landing page with a video to sign up for my newsletter, but is there some way to harvest the low hanging fruit easily in adwords where ads lead to signups in my niche? I have a lot of technical background and am looking for kickass ideas. Thanks! 126fajdkql
