HTTP vs HTTPS

What are the pros and cons of each? Looking for more information about this.
Thank you ahead of time.

Hi there,
One of the most important reasons is:
Google Starts Giving A Ranking Boost To Secure HTTPS/SSL Sites
Google has announced that going HTTPS — adding a SSL 2048-bit key certificate on your site — will give you a minor ranking boost.
Google says this gives websites a small ranking benefit, only counting as a “very lightweight signal” within the overall ranking algorithm. In fact, Google said this carries “less weight than other signals such as high-quality content.” Based on their tests, Google says it has an impact on “fewer than 1% of global queries” but said they “may decide to strengthen” the signal because they want to “encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web.”

Here's my quick thoughts on this:
http:
Pro:
- Quick, fast and easy
- No SSL fees
- Super fast
- Most content pages don't really need to be encrypted
Cons:
- Anyone snooping on your connection at a coffee shop can see what you're seeing.
- NSA can read what you're doing
https:
Pro:
- Nobody will be able to see that you're reading a blog post about how to cure your herpes.
- Google was pissed off at the NSA, and is now using sites that have SSL as a ranking signal (but it's not a silver bullet). Here's an article I wrote about that: http://www.customerparadigm.com/google-boosting-ssl-encrypted-sites-in-their-search-results/
- Done right, it's nearly as fast as non-secure pages
Cons:
- It's expensive to buy an SSL certificate (although there may be a non-profit starting next year that will give them away for free)
- It's a pain to generate keys, install intermediate certificates.
- It sucks when your SSL certificate expires on your site, even if you're not using it anymore (Google will show a big error to many users: http://www.customerparadigm.com/how-an-expired-ssl-certificate-can-drive-traffic-away-even-if-youre-not-using-it/)
- It can be slower, because of the math required to encrypt and decrypt information.
- You have to be better at coding sites, because if you have things like non-secure images, css or other resources on your secure page, it will throw an error.
Hope that helps...
-- Jeff

Blog Post Relevance vs Traffic
Hello Moz community, I have a website (lets say that I am selling tshirts), and want to create a blog (www.website.com/blog). With that blog, I would like to post about random topics including travel, leisure, events, new products etc. I want to do this for 1. to get affiliate commissions, 2. to increase web traffic, 3. to potentially increase my domain authority. I would like to know if this blog with random posts would negatively affect my website ranking and keyword ranking (for t-shirts), as it is not relevant to the products that I am selling (and the keywords that I am ranking for). As Google currently understands that my website is a webstore selling t-shirts (and I am ranking for the tshirt keywords), but the algorithm get confused if I start posting about travel and random topics? Your help greatly appreciated in the matter.

Should you Move To HTTPS? Google Thinks So!
Just wanted to share some information that HTTPS is now a positive ranking factor. Here is an article about the fact that it can give a small boost in Rankings: http://searchengineland.com/explainer-googles-new-ssl-https-ranking-factor-works-200492 Here is also a video by Google Saying they think "every site should have a security certificate" and how to employ it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBhZ6S0PFCY People may already know about this; just thought it was important to share and couldn't find it thoroughly addressed anywhere on the site.

What are you doing to change their stars?
I read on PCWorld a piece by John Rebeiro (@JohnRebeiro) about Google's employee diversity. In it, Google in the US is 70% male and 61% white. There is more data and it's worth a read. My question for those of you who may employ more than a 2 to 3 people is are you actively engaged in doing anything to change the stars of young women, minorities, lower income children, etc.? Why do I ask? Because early on in my Mozziness I saw someone ask for some help with a site around children and autism. From Rand to every mozzer on Q&A there was an outpouring of help. I was truly moved. I would love to learn from others who are further along in these types of efforts.

Google does make an effort in that they have RISE awards to assist with those who are working to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) with girls and minorities. These awards are from $10K to $100K to help expand these types of programs. We have had paid interns for some time now and we get as much or more than we give from that effort (boastful disclosure: Our head of development today was our first intern!) We put on a one week Code Camp (go to our site/code-camp) a few months ago and it was amazing - for me and for our team. But, to see kids eyes open up as they realize they have found something they never even thought they would have an interest in is mind blowing. We decided we would give a $25 gift card to Best Buy for the student who was most engaged and pushed the most to learn more, etc. That winner had never thought of coding as something SHE would have an interest in and she was an unbelievable sponge. She pushed our dev staff to give her more and more and it was truly fun and rewarding for them. Yes, we had to spend some time and money, but the break from the day to day of a marketing firm for our team truly invigorated them. I just want to know what others might be doing in the areas of trying get more diversity in the ranks of those who work in our world? It would be great to share ideas and resources. I will tell you that if anyone needs tips, what we learned, etc. I would be more than happy to share all.3 -
Long copy/articles vs short copy/articles
Hi i'm after data which shows having long articles (e.g. 3000 words) outperforms a much shorter article like 1000 words (assume they are both the same quality of articles) for SEO and even conversion. So far i have seen these articles. http://moz.com/blog/why-content-goes-viral-the-scientific-theory-and-proof including the PDF which links to it. http://moz.com/blog/what-kind-of-content-gets-links-in-2012 Can anyone recommend any other sources which backs the claim that long articles are normally better than short articles. Cheers, Matt
