How do I setup sitemaps for an international website?
-
I am adding translated versions of my sites to a subdomain for example es.example.com. Will I add each subdomain into Google Webmaster Tools? Will each need its own sitemap?
-
Hi Niners,
I wouldn't use subdomains for international website. Instead I'd use subfolders. Subdomains can be considered as totally separate websites, while using subfolders you "gather" the link juice in a more efficient way. But that is a personal opinion.
Regarding your question:
- I'd create a profile in Google Webmasters Tools for each of the subdomains/subfolders
- Do not forget the international targeting for each of the profiles
- I would submit to each of these profiles it's own language based sitemap
- if you are talking about an international website, I'd consider using Hreflang markup.
I hope this has helped.
Gr., Keszi

Xml sitemaps giving 404 errors
We have recently made updates to our xml sitemap and have split them into child sitemaps. Once these were submitted to search console, we received notification that the all of the child sitemaps except 1 produced 404 errors. However, when we view the xml sitemaps in a browser, there are no errors. I have also attempted crawling the child sitemaps with Screaming Frog and received 404 responses there as well. My developer cannot figure out what is causing the errors and I'm hoping someone here can assist. Here is one of the child sitemaps: http://www.sermonspice.com/sitemap-countdowns_paged_1.xml

Website not ranking for noncompetitive terms
Hi, We've took over a website last July and no matter what we do we just can't get it ranking in Google, even for noncompetitive terms. here is the website in question: http://www.alignandsmile.co.uk Ideally the client would like to rank for Canary Wharf but that location is competitive, the site doesn't even rank for 'Dentist New Providence Wharf E14' despite it being included in the title tag on the home page and in the content throughout the website. Directories with Align and Smile's business information do rank however. I opened a case with google through Webmaster tools and they 'reviewed your site and found no manual actions by the webspam team that might affect your site's ranking in Google.' So I'm a bit stuck. The site ranks top for the keyphrase in Bing and Yahoo...we are really struggling with Google! Any help would be much appreciated. many thanks Marcus

New Website and Domain Question
Hi all, I am launching a new website around the end of October and I have purchased a great domain to use for it. My question is should I put some kind of holding page up to try and start building up some domain authority in preperation for launch? Or maybe a blog at www.domain.com/blog and then keep all the blog content at the same location when the full site goes up? Or is it best to wait and just launch the site when the first version is complete? Thanks, Ben

Xml Sitemap
Hi mozzers, I am about to submit a sitemap for one of my clients via webmaster tools. The issue is that I have way too many urls that I don't want them to be indexed by Google such as testing pages, auto generated pages... Is there way to remove certain URL from the XML sitemap or is this impossible? If impossible, is the only way to control these urls is to "No index" all these pages that i don't want the search engine to see? Thanks Mozzers,

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further technical difficulties. Best regards, Now they have not said if they are going to do anything about this and to be honest i am getting fed up with the hosting company because i am being told that the slow speed i was receiving for my website www.in2town.co.uk was down to it taking a long time to reach my server before reaching my site. Now not sure if this is correct or not but with all the help i have received off semoz i have managed to increase the speed to my site but now i have found this problem. Can anyone tell me if i am being played and also can anyone recommend a professional UK hosting company. Also is this site affecting my spped and my site performance.

External Microsite VS Internal Folder
We would like to create either a new website or a new section of our existing website that will feature (in time) a lot of content including a forum, video training, tutorials and downloadable resources. Logistically, it would be much easier to create this in a new site (we'll call it newproduct.com) and refer people to the new site. We would, however, like to keep all of that content on our existing site for the sake of content building and SEO. Should we: Duplicate the content and use no index no follow and/or rel canonical? Host all of the content on our site and set up a vanity domain (www.newproduct.com) to point people to the deep linked area (www.mainsite.com/product/newproductinfo)? Host the content only on an external site with the occasional link back to our main site? I realize there are other options but they're mostly variants of the above. Our main objectives are to make it easy for people to get to while leveraging the new content for SEO purposes. What are the pros and cons of these different approaches? What seems to make the most sense? Thank you!
