Discontinued Product on a Ecommerce site
-
To create a better customer experience, rather then remove discontinued product from a site, we remove many links from the page, and remove it from the navigation of the site, but we keep the url and show that the product can no longer be purchased. This keeps the links, keeps the content, and gives customers the opportunity to find other products we have. But I often wonder if we should allow this items to just 404 and be done with them. Here is an example. http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-dyn-bm5a-list. Any advice?

Thanks all, I'm glad 75% of you agree with my method. Thanks for the input!

Great advice from Massimilano and Monica - always consider customer experience in the equation as a major factor alongside your on-page ranking factors.
Avoid the 404's and retain the traffic by suggesting alternatives that are relevant to their original query and you won't go far wrong.
Cheers and best of luck moving forward!

I couldn't agree with Massimilano more. That page still has value because it can potentially bring traffic to alternative products. I am not a fan of redirecting or 404ing a page that still brings traffic. And as a consumer I don't want to automatically be redirected to what I am not looking for. If I were chances are I would leave the site.
I would definitely add the page back to the navigation and make sure you don't remove anymore links. Then I would state the product is discontinued and add links to similar products. Here is an example of a page that I did on my site.
-
I think showing information about the product, making clear the product can no longer be purchased and encouraging the visitor to buy alternatives is the right thing to do.
404 is out of question, it means you are removing it from SERP, why do that? You want to have as much pages in SERP as possible.
Think about those visitors, they got on that page looking specifically for that product. If you redirect/301 them to something else, you do not serve them the information they were looking for, and you may redirect them to content they are not interested into.
The only case where I would do a 301 is if the discontinued product page has tons of backlink and a terrific page authority, in other words an incredible amount of page juice to transfer.
Checking the example you linked, that page has PA 1 and zero backlinks, so there's no advantage in doing a 301.
One final notice, I am not an expert of music supply but I think you can do a much much better job at suggesting alternatives, if I look at that page I can't see any alternative product, I would suggest alternatives prominently on top of the page with a short reference+link where you state the product is no longer available, or something like that.

Hi,
I personally would create a 301 redirect to the closest relevant page (for example their category), and if the website has a blog, I would create a new entry telling my customers that unfortunately we have discontinued Product X.
This way I'd keep the link juice gathered by that specific product page, and distribute it towards a relevant page.

Main Site and eCommerce Site URLs for SEO
My client currently has a main website on a url and an eCommerce site on a subdomain. The eCommerce site is currently not mobile friendly, has images that are too small and are problematic - and I believe it negates some of the SEO work we do for them. I had to turn off Google Shopping ads because the quality score was so low. That being said, they are rebuilding a shopping cart on a new platform that will be mobile friendly BUT the images are going to be tiny until they slowly replace images over several months. Would you keep the shopping cart on a subdomain, or make it part of the main website URL? Can it negatively impact the progress we have made on the main site SEO.

Direct To Site Traffic Decline
Hi Everyone, My company's site went from Http to Https and responsive design last year. After 6 months passed, we noticed a 40% decline from direct visits but revenue saw an increase. Could the 301 redirects from Http to Https cause the drop in direct traffic? Thanks!

What to do next with my site gamblingsites.co
So I have this site gamblingsites.co, which I launched about a year ago (I think.) This used to be internetgamblingsites.net (a domain I bought, but never managed to get in the index, and it appeared to violate the T/Cs after asking in GWMT) and before that the site used to be casinowarehouse.eu. After moving to gamblingsites.co, the pages were indexed almost instantly. I kept a 301 in place until today as I had some links pointing to internetgamblingsites.net. Now, until a few weeks ago, everything was fine. The site was ranking top 10 for gambling sites (8-10) and I had some traffic everyday. This site wasn't my top priority, so besides adding new unique content, I didn't do much with it. In each case no shady link building or what-so-ever. On February first of this year, however, it lost all of its rankings, and I have no idea why. Much worse site appear in the top 50, where a sub page of my site appears somewhere on the 9th SERP for keyword 'gambling sites.' Last week I started contacting some people and asked them to update my links. I also used my own sites (all on unique hosting accounts) to build some branded links, i.e. 'GamblingSites.co' and similar terms to down tune the exact match. I also decreased the instances of the exact match on the homepage, to avoid over optimization. Finally, I removed the 301 from internetgamblingsites.net, since the better links have been changed (or are about to get changed soon.) Now, couple of days later... no changes, but it's probably to early to judge. My question to you: "What would you do next, to try to save the site and at least get some traffic to it?" Thank you for your help, Giorgio PS: Feel free to ask for more information.

Google.ca is showing our US site instead of our Canada Site
When our Canadian users who search on google.ca for our brand (e.g. Travelocity, Travelocity hotels, etc.), the first few results our from our US site (travelocity.com) rather than our Canadian site (travelocity.ca). In Google Webmaster Tools, we've adjusted the geotargeting settings to focus on the appropriate locale, but the wrong country TLD is still coming up at the top via google.ca. What's the best way to ensure our Canadian site comes up instead of the US site on google.ca? Thanks, Tory Smith
