Should I Kill the Old Domain or Work Through the Redirect?
-
Our IT department wasn't able to create a new directory on the current domain name for whatever reason and so we had to create a new domain name called ww2.domain.com to build the new site. So now we have the new site up and appartly some PDFs and pages are being directed to the from the old site. www.domain.com but 10,000 pages /PDFs are still indexed in Google and are not redirected. So when you open the page you get the old www.domain.com instead of it redirecting to ww2.domain.com. It's sort of a mess! My question is can we just kill the old domain name and move the ww2.domain.com back to the old domain? We also want to do away with the ww2.domain.com and go back to www.domain.com. I know it's confusing as heck!
What would you recommend?

In other words they/you don't care about traffic, so what's the point of having a website?

Thanks guys for the input. I am thinking then about killing the one domain www and then re-institute the name www over the ww2. That sounds like the best oprion for what this situation is. The ww2 has about 600 pages indexed (which is the new website) and the www (which is the old site) has 10k pages indexed but at this point just to clean it up, then this sounds like a good way to go. Also the directory structure is not the same. Lead gen unfortunately is not part of the digital strategy so I guess losing link juice may not be as important. Eventually the new site pages/pdfs will be ineeded.
thanks for the feedback. Just wanted to reconfirm my thinking.

Hello Darren,
I'm not sure if I understand the question but I will try to answer based on what I think you mean.
From what I understand, you have 301 redirected the old domain to the new domain but not many pages (the 10,000 you mentioned). You can, of course, 301 redirect (re-redirect, as it were) the ww2. domain to the old www. as long as you are willing to risk a small loss in "link juice" which normally results from such an action.
You can also kill the old domain name and re-institute the new domain name over it in www. format - I'm not sure why your IT department didn't do this in the first place to save you a lot of hassle, although they should have known if redirecting 10,000 files was going to be an arduous task for them.
Alternatively, you can just cancel the original 301 redirect and resume with the original domain name while erasing the new version - this might not solve your "directory" issue, but it would help to clean the situation up. I would focus on addressing the root cause of the issue rather than attempting to meddle around with the technical SEO aspects of your website - you only want to be making adjustments that help your marketing efforts.
As a last resort, you could also bring in a consulting firm to address the original issue. If your IT department isn't up to the task, there is no shame is getting help from experts in the field.
Hope this helps!

I am not sure I fully understand, but when you publish a new website you must secure all old urls have a match in the new website, otherwise is bad, very bad.
The second problem is that since you publish something somewhere it get indexed and once it's indexed if it disappear is bad.
The good news is to generate 10k redirect is not a big issue.
The basic principle is urls should never disappear, they should always exist, maybe redirect, but never disappear.

Directing a domain.com/BLOG to a different host
Hello,
Web Design | | SharonEKG
i cant seem to figure out how to approach this matter. we have a website and a domain setup in one place and we wanted to setup a blog for that website on a different hosting, what do i have to do to link between the two to make it so when a user type domain com /blog he will get to our blog that is hosted on a different hosting plan? with the blog hosting plan we received a temporary domain that does not expire but i have been told that if i redirect to that temporary domain it wont work correctly also, if we do manage to go through that process will accessing the blog will the URL show domain com/blog or will still show the temporary given domain? is my only option is buying a new domain and just link between the two? Thanks!0 -
Drupal Domain Access SEO Issues
I'm working with a new developer to redesign several Drupal sites and have 3-4 sites with similar designs and modules. The developer is keen on using Drupal Domain Access to make maintenance and sharing user information easier. Each site currently has a unique domain and content (although the sites are in related niches). Are there issues from an SEO perspective with the Drupal Domain Access Module? With only one instance of Drupal on the backend will Google somehow not view these as independent sites? Thanks for any info!

Should I do multiple 301 redirects?
We launched our website less than a year ago. We had another domain name and business name. I created 301s from the old domain to the new domain, that are still in place now. We are in the process of restructuring our current site which would result in pages getting a new title and URL to match. Essentially it would look something like this:
Web Design | | MAVENTRI
-- olddomain.com/page1 --> newdomain.com/page1 --> newdomain.com/newpage I recently checked the analytics and it looks like we are still getting traffic redirected from the old domain. What is the best way to handle these redirects? Should I redirect a redirect?0 -
Do more links from sub-domains to domain (website) hurt rankings?
Hi all, If there are multiple sub-domains like abc.website.com, 123.website.com, etc...and if the top pages of website are linked from multiple sub-domains via top menu or footer links; will this hurts? Will too much interlinking of few top pages of a website from it's sub-domains dilute link juice? How many links ideally we can add to website from a sub-domain? Thanks

Many errors from previous ecommerce site. Domain is now just a localized wordpress site.
Many errors from previous ecommerce site. Do I need to redirect every single page that no longer exists at this domain? loveyourcabinets.com used to be loveyourkitchenandbath.com but we have since changed course. We want loveyourkitchenandbath.com to be our local site on Long Island and NYC. Loveyourcabinets.com will be an ecommerce project that I'll be revamping in the coming months. I think Moz as well as Google still has all of the old ecommerce pages indexed. And of course, Moz is shooting me a bunch of error all regarding pages from the ecommerce site that used to be on loveyourkitchenandbath.com. Any thoughts? Commentary? Thx

Show root domain (that is 301 redirected) in SERP?
Hi, If I have the domain name www.businessname.com.au pointing (using 301 redirect) to a particular page on a business directory site (eg www.bizdirectory.com.au/businessname), is it possible to have the URL www.businessname.com.au displayed in the Google search results rather than the destination page of www.bizdirectory.com.au/businessname? Thanks in advance,

Do I need to redirect soft 404s that I got from Google Webmaster Tools?
Hi guys, I got almost 1000+ soft 404s from GWT. All of the soft 404s produce 200 HTTP status code but the URLs are something like the following: http://www.example.com/search/house-for-rent (query used: house for rent) http://www.example.com/search/-----------rent (query used:-------rent) There are no listings that match these queries and there is an advanced search that is visible in these pages. Here are my questions: 1. Do I need to redirect each page to its appropriate landing page? 2. Do I need to add user sitemap or a list of URLs where they can search for other properties? Any suggestions would help. 🙂

How does the "first link" rule work with the "reasonable surfer patent" when it comes to the main navigation for a website?
In trying to figure out navigation for a new website, I am struggling with the first link rule vs. the reasonable surfer patent where the first link rule implies that Google "counts" the first link to a page including navigation, and the reasonable surfer patent that implies that navigation links carry less weight than body copy links. What is the best solution for creating main navigation so that it doesn't take away from the body copy links?
