How do you manage Wordpress URL hierarchy with permalinks?
-
I have quite a few website in Wordpress but I continuously run into the same issue.
With permalinks it is not recommended to use /%category%/%post_name%/ because it puts an undue load on your bandwidth, server and makes the crawler crawl a ton of duplicate content pages. On one site changing to that hierarchy even crashed some of the pages (probably a permissions error).
I would like a correct information hierarchy, but this doesn't seem like correct play.
What do you use as your URL hierarchy?
Do you have any plugins or fixes for this issue? Thanks
-
That certainly works from a functional perspective.
Based on the original question and the avoidance of any numbers in the current URL, it seems that would be quite undesirable.
Many people want to avoid all numbers in URLs as it looks quite ugly. Including the post id allows a balance between minimizing numerical use, and functionality.
-
- another advantage of this structure is the flexibility to change post titles without breaking links.
Well, I think that changing your title would break links and leads to another indexation. /12345.oldtitle/ is a different URL then /12345.newtitle/ or isn't it?
-
I would use the following
/%year%-%monthnum%-%day%-%postname%-%post_id/
/2010-08-04-titleofthepost-276762Reasons:
Date for visitors, usually visitors need a clue whether your content is recent or not.
Postname for obvious reason
and ID for internal tracking and analysisFurthermore using this structure makes it easy to analyse a site later in excel by text to column functions etc.
Plugins: I reccomend All in one SEO pack

I am in the process of setting up my first wordpress site now. I have given a lot of thought to the URL structure. I decided upon the following structure:
/%post_id%.%postname%/
My reasoning is as follows:
-
including the post id offers the advantage of proper scaling as the site grows. As you mentioned, there are issues when not using a unique numeric identifier, especially when performing searches. These issues will impact your entire site with slow performance.
-
another advantage of this structure is the flexibility to change post titles without breaking links. Consider the case where you create an article called "Google social service goes live" then later determine your article will do better in search engines with a title of "Google Facebook service goes live". If you change the title with your current structure you will break links and have to 301 the pages. If you include the post id in the URL, you can pull articles solely off the post id and all old links would work without the use of 301s.
-
I was debating whether to use categories or not. Categories do provide clear structures, but categories can change over time and many articles could be included in multiple categories. What led me to my final decision of not including categories is wikipedia's model. Wikipedia's flat structure works on a very large scale without categories.
You are welcome to consider any or all of the above reasoning. I hope it helps your decision-making process.

Spaces (actual spaces) in URL
Hi all, Is there a huge loss of SEO performance if a URL shows spaces with an actual space (i.e. %20) in the URL rather than a "-" (or indeed a "_")? I know the preferred option is to have a "-", but I am just wondering if it is worth our effort to manually change the "%20" to a "-" in all the instances? Thanks 🙂 Diana

Using category pages in Wordpress
In our niche we have one main keyword, which represents the entire category. We are using wordpress. I am trying to understand the best URL structure and wonder if the below is a good approach: http://domain.com/keyword This category page will be written to contain an article on the subject. The posts that are put into that category will subsequently appear on this page, below that article. Each of those posts would be targeting a related keyword. e.g. I would write a post which has, as the main target keyword: "MainKeyword training" and another post, which would be targeting "MainKeyword techniques" ... (and so on). Thanks for your advice. Andrew

SEO url best practices
We're revamping our site architecture and making several services pages that are accessible from one overarching service page. An example would be as follows: Services Student Services Essay editing Essay revision Author Services Book editing Manuscript critique We'll also be putting breadcrumbs throughout the site for easy navigation, however, is it imperative that we build the URLs that deep? For example, could we simply have www.site.com/essay-editing rather than www.site.com/services/students/essay-editing? I prefer the simplicity of the former, but I feel the latter may be more "search robot friendly" and better for SEO. Any advice on this is much appreciated.

How can I see the SEO of a URL? I need to know the progress of a specific landing-page of my web. Not a keyword, an url please. Thanks.
I need to know the evolution on SEO of a specific landing-page (an URL) of my web. Not a keyword, a url. Thanks. Muchas gracias)

Does having mulitste wordpress with same templaes hurt you?
Ok seo guys, don't get crazy here I am not trying to build a link wheel or anything black hat that's why I am asking. I want to create several sites that are within my niche but cannot be on the same site because it just wouldn't make sense. So for the purpose of branding a company can we have multi sites with similar templates or does google not want this. I am not trying to rank these for the sole purpose of back linking but I want them all on a mulit site so they can have the same buddy press network. Let me know what you guys think.

Wordpress SEO Errors - Any advice?
Hi all! My site is on the WP platform and I'm having a crawl error. Wondering if you guys could possibly help me figure out what's going on? I have a good number of 404 errors where the links seems to be appended and I can't figure out why. I've scoured my individual posts and cannot seem to find the broken link? The crawl error looks a bit like this: http://preciousthingsphotography.com/2007/12/10/chicago-family-photographer-welcome/http:%2F%2Fpreciousthingsphotography.com%2F2007%2F12%2F10%2Fchicago-family-photographer-welcome%2F You can see that my original link is somehow being doubled with the slashes being replaced? This is happening on all of my posts. Any ideas as to what could be going on? Thanks so much!
