What is better for web ranking? A domain or subdomain?
-
I realise that often it is better put content in a subfolder rather than a subdomain, but I have another question that I cannot seem to find the answer to.
Is there any ranking benefit to having a site on a .co.uk or .com domain rather than on a subdomain? I'm guessing that the subdomain might benefit from other content on the domain it's hosted on, but are subdomains weighted down in any way in the search results?

Glad I could help
Best wishes,

Thanks for the clarification Don - much appreciated

I think the answer is basically the same.
The answer is they will be treated differently. You won't see a direct benefit from latching on to the main domain.
In some cases it does make sense to use sub-domains for example, forums.domain.com. This gives the user both keywords forums & domain name (an indirect benefit). It makes it easier to manage content in a CMS by having the forums on a sub-domain. Heck Google does this for many of its products as does Amazon. In most cases these are services offered by the main domain. For example: Google->Ad-Words, Google->Translate, Amazon->Seller Centeral etc..
However if they are completely different items or services I would just use a different domain completely. I would point to my work for an example. I work for a custom rubber manufacturer who's primary focus is working on new product development and manufacturing for OEM's . But some of the products on our website were generating a lot of interest and phone calls from smaller opportunities. Instead of ignoring this option and potential revenue we built a distribution site (On a different domain) to handle these smaller opportunities. Had we done this on a sub-domain we could have confused larger OEM clients by thinking we are a retailer or middle man, when in fact we are a manufacturer.
I hope that clears things up, really evaluate the reason for the sub-domain if it is a sub-product / service by the main domain and there is no clear conflict for making it a sub-domain then okay, otherwise and in most cases it will likely make more sense to use a different domain completely.
This is my thoughts I hope it helps,
Don

Thanks for your response Donford and for the link.
The question I am asking is slightly different (I think!). If you were setting up a completely new website, would that website rank better on it's own separate domain.
For example, if I setup a website called www.widgets.com would Google prefer that to widgets.maindomain.co.uk? Or is there no difference at all?
I guess what I'm trying to find out is whether there is any difference at all between setting up a new website on a subdomain or domain, or whether Google treats these as the same.

Hello,
A subdomain is treated as its own domain and will rank separately from the main domain. There are a couple of reason I can think of to use a sub-domain but by in large it is more productive to use the main domain.
Matt Cutts (Google) talked about this several years ago here is a link for you: https://www.mattcutts.com/blog/subdomains-and-subdirectories/
The notable thing in Matt Cutts blog post is how they treat domains and sub-domains separately. This is actually important for sites that host others content. Think blog domains for example.

Unrelated subdomain hurts domain rankins?
Hi All, One of our subdomains has lot of content created by different users and mostly they are outgoing links from landing pages. Moreover the top ranking content is about "cigarettes" which is nowhere related to our niche. Will this hurt our domain rankings?

My main site is www.isacleanse.com.au (Obviously targeted to Australian Market) and also www.isacleanse.co.nz targeted to NZ. The main Keywords im targeting are 'Isagenix' for both and also Isagenix Australia, Isagenix Perth, Sydney (Australian cities) and Isagenix NZ, Isagenix New Zealand, Isagenix Auckland etc.. for NZ The Australian site gets a lot more traffic and Australian market gets a lot more searches - I also have a section www.isacleanse.com.au/isagenix-new-zealand/ on the Australian site. The question is am I best off redirrecting the .co.nz domain completley to the Australian Domain to give it extra SEO Juice?0 -
Client wants a seperate .tv domain for their media/videos instead of a subdomain/subfolder. What is the best way to pass of link equity to a new domain?
We have a client that wants to place their video content on a .tv tld instead of a subfolder/subdomain in their .com website. They believe that the .tv domain will better represent the media experience of their business. We can understand this client's position however we are concerned about their .tv domain will lose out on the link equity if it were no longer placed in the .com's subdomain/subfolder. Here are our questions: 1. What would be the best way to pass of link equity from .com website to a new .tv domain? Should we just have a video link on the .com website that 301 directs to the new .tv domain? 2. Is there any SEO benefit of having a .tv domain for Google Video queries or even Youtube? 3. Is there any long term value of having two different websites? For link equity purposes we understand that it would be better if everything was in a .com. However is a .tv domain ideal for a better representation of their media content? We appreciate any feedback.

Sub Domain
Hi everybody, My competition has started to use the sub-domains vastly. He has created one sub domain for every single city and keyword. Is it something that I should be worried of? Is it a good idea I start doing the same thing? Thanks for your help.

Multiple domains?
I do own a domain for my business right now, and would have a few questions, regarding the increase or traffic for my website and getting new business 1. Is it worth to purchase multiple domains, keyword search relevant, to my business? 2. If so how is the best way to use it? : have them redirect to my own website? a specific type of redirect? do I make a separate website for each of them? 3. for ex if the keyword is " tile and grout". I figured would be best to own "tileandgrout.com". How about "tile-and-grout.com"? thank you in advance

Ranking
Hi All, I have been working on a car insurance site which targets US market. we have been doing all types of links to the site like - good related directory links, related blogpost and reviews. the site is updated daily with a fresh unique content. what more is needed to get it to the first page. we are currently ranking in the range of 40 - 50 on the page 4 or page 5. we have also recently done a redesign with a new cms, done a good press release but not seeing much of changes. please if anyone in the same industry or with some experience can suggest us. we are using all white hat seo & I can understand the amount of competition in this niche. Thanks
