Keyword targeting
-
Hi guys,
Are there any restrictions around targeting for keywords? For eg: a competitors name can we target for that keyword?
Would appreciate some advice around this
Thanks

Hi Justin, Ahhh the bias of the Google keyword tool. I once read an experiment where a guy built a site, based on a hunch, around a keyword that had zero search volume.
After ranking 1st for that keyword for a month, he checked his analytics only to find that his site had received a 1000+ visitors that had all arrived via his main keyword. (This was when analytics used to show your main keyword)
For cases like this, I'd just go with my gut instinct Justin, as that's sometimes the best keyword tool. Even your instinctive keyword tool search volume varies a lot, depending if you've had your morning coffee or not.
For any keywords with search volume under 1000, I don't pay too much attention to the keyword tool. I have a few home renovation sites targeted to specific areas. All keyword research on these keywords is usually zero searches per month. These are keywords such as 'Home Renovations (Suburb)'. After I rank first for those medium density suburbs with the keyword 'Home Renovations (Suburb)', I usually get about three calls a month for that service. Remember these are home renovation jobs at $20K+ a job, so they turn out to be pretty lucrative jobs leads I can give to my clients. And all from '0' searches per month!
Perhaps you'd have better luck asking the physic for next months search volume ... lol.

Hi Justin,
First of all that would be difficult if you want to rank for 'celebrity' name. Now coming to your question yes you can target "celebrity" name to rank for a keyword but If you you’re using competitor brand terms on your own pages – a risky proposition from a legal standpoint.
So try to avoid to use exact name on webpage content. Rest there are no restriction.
Thanks

Hi Alick300
Thanks for your feedback. Is there a restriction using a "celebrity" name to rank for a keyword...
I know you mentioned trademark and I don't think her name is a registered trademark?
Thanks

Lol hey Richard,
Thanks for your response Great feedback and good to know the legality behind this kind of situation. I have been doing some extensive keyword searching for long tail keywords and noticed there is a low search volume in NZ for the keyword Psychic Readings, Online Psychics, or even online psychic readings and I'm wondering why the search volume is so low.
I know NZ is a small place, but I know there is a particular psychic medium in NZ that has a huge following, on fb her fan base is 100k most of those people are based in NZ so surely the search volume for google can't be that low?
I go over and search terms in Australia for that same keyword, only to find they have alot more search volume. My only guess is the population is alot more then NZ, but I find it hard to believe that only 10 people on average search for the keyword Online Psychic Readings in NZ each month with the competition being HIGH according to google keyword tool...
So this boggles my mind....
Your advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Justin, It all depends on whether or not that business has that word, phrase or term trademarked. If they don't have their name or 'money term' trademark protected, then feel free to use it as you see fit.
Trademarked terms and business names are used to prevent you from gaining a financial advantage from their branding and marketing efforts, and to prevent brand confusion in the marketplace.
Even without a trademark, the biggest infringement you can make in this situation is to attempt to trick the potential customer into believing that they are dealing with the official brand or business. Provided you don't do that, you can use the terms or words as much as you want legally. Am I going to see you ranking for 'Apple Computers' tomorrow?

Hi,
No there is no such restriction in SEO. There is some restriction in paid advertising(Google Ad Words) only, you can't use competitors keyword/brand name in Ad copy but you can add those keywords in Ad Words Ad group.
In short you can target competitors keyword even in Google Ad Words Campaign.
I am quoting Google "Google will not investigate or restrict the use of trademark terms in keywords, even if a trademark complaint is received."
Thanks

One word Keywords
Hey as you know that as a seo we are, we always optimize keywords which are at least 2 words, and lets say I'm trying to optimize a page for terms like "man clothing, man london clothing, man great collection, man stylus collection" and as you can guess I optimize this pages for this keywords by inputting them into title heading tags and body.

So my question is , what if google takes "man" phrase from my 2 words keywords, and pretend as a my keyword. (I mean what if google thinks my keywords is man because as you can see in all of the keywords "man" is in all of them.)
And what if Google thinks the density of "man" probably would be %20 which is astronomic number.? Sorry for my bad english.0 -
Going after multiple similar keywords, which is the better approach?
Let's say I have a page targeting a keyword, "New York Restaurants". There are also several "very close" variations of this keyword which I could also target. Here are the volume estimates: New York Restaurants - 100
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | jcgoodrich
Restaurants New York - 40
Best Restaurants New York - 30
Best Restaurants in New York - 20
etc. Given this, which of the following is the better overall approach? A) Have one page and work all of these keywords so the page targets all of them. For example here try to weave in "Best" in different ways. B) Have multiple pages and use 301 redirects. Create one page only targeted at "New York Restaurants" and then create additional pages with the other terms in the URL and Headline, which 301 redirect to my "New York Restaurants" page. This is similar to how wikipedia does redirects, for example "Bourne 2" 301 redirects to "Bourne Supremacy". Thanks! | New York Restaurants | 12,100 | Medium | $0.93 | 0% | ACCOUNT |
| Restaurants New York | 2,900 | Medium | $1.00 | 0% | ACCOUNT |
| Best Restaurants in New York | 3,600 | Low | $0.69 | 0% | ACCOUNT |
| Best New York Restaurants | 2,400 | Low | $0.80 | 0% | ACCOUNT |
| New York's Best Restaurants | 260 | Low | $0.76 | 0% |0 -

How do 302 redirects from Akamai content targeting impact SEO?
How do 302 redirects from Akamai content targeting impact SEO? I'm using Akamai content targeting to get people from countries and languages to the right place (eg www.abc.123 to redirect to www.abc.123/NL-nl/default.aspx where folks from the Netherlands get their localized site in dutch) and from the edge server closest to them. As far as I know Akamai doesn't allow me to use anything but a 302. Anyone run across this? is this 302 a problem? I did a fetch as googlebot on my main domain and all I see is the Akamai 302. I can't imagine this is the first time Akamai has run across this but I would like to know for sure.

Any resources for targeting sites towards long-tail keywords or broad match traffic?
I've been looking around, but haven't had much luck finding info or case-studies on targeting long-tail keywords or broad match traffic. So, for example, trying to target a site about used toyotas. (Not my term, but provides a decent example) Theres more motivated traffic searching "2002 Toyota Camry" than "Used Toyotas". While Used Toyotas make more sense for a site theme from a visitor perspective, I would rather have an article on my site rank for the easier keyword of say Blue 2002 Toyota Camry. I make more money from long tail keywords than Used Toyotas. Any thoughts or references about increasing those rankings would be appreciated. Thanks.

Keyword as domain- worth buying it?
Hi, I just noticed that a top keyword for our industry is available as a domain, but for around $2,500.00 USD. For example, www.chicagoplumber.com. If we already have a pretty well established online identity as, let's say, www.chicagopipes.com, would it be worth buying the new domain and making it our primary? Thanks for your feedback! -Will

Keyword-Rich Domains - Redirect?
Hi, Mozzers- I have a client that has a bunch of pretty nice keyword-rich domain names. Their traffic and rankings are good. They provide legal services in the Chicago area. I have lots of good content that I could use to start a blog using a domain like keyword,keyword-blog.com. Good idea? Currently I have a resources area on their website but feel like this area could be getting a little bloated and some news-related stuff isn't really appropriate. 2 Questions: Should I use one of the decent domains for a blog and build up the rankings, traffic, and link to the main site? Or is this lots of work for little payout? Both sites would be hosted in the cloud. Some of the domain names are related to their name, others are keyword or geo-targeted. Would it be wise to setup 301 redirects going to their website? Pros/cons? If you need additional info, please PM me for details. Thank you, friends! LHC
