Promoting our blog posts. Effective ways and planning.
-
Hi Guys. I work for TOAD diaries, we make personalised journals and diaries.
So we've taken a dive into blogging recently to help with brand awareness/ loyalty and increase traffic to our site. We don't have much of a social media following. So I'd like to know about other effective ways to promote them.
The advice seems to range from extremely obvious and generic on the one hand i.e) post it to your Facebook, twitter etc, to seriously in depth, using a multitude of tools I've never heard of. I mean it's pretty overwhelming
So I'd like to focus down on 5 or 10 ways I can 'get it out there' effectively.
Any thoughts? What are the essential tools/ techniques/ jobs I should be doing? Etc etc.
Note on our blogs: They are very different from one another, so far we've done how to make an origami boat and paper vs digital: part 1. We're also working on a time management piece at the moment. So they're all to do with paper, stationery, organisation, planning ect. But like I say each blog post is quite varied. Thus the target market varies too.
Also, do let me know what you think to the blog posts
Any area's we can improve upon?
Cheers guys.
Isaac.

Links are nofollow and are brand-name-based.
In my opinion a link that generate referral traffic is always good link, also in the eyes of Google
I would not worry about it

Hi there! This forum is so useful, thanks so much.
Can I just clarify a few things?
Using our customers as a springboard with a promotion. Do you mean we could do a giveaway to encourage people to share our content on social media? Or something like that?
As for marketing content, I totally understand we would need to segment. But how would you go about building the marketing list? What are your go-to tools to build that list? Mainly Twitter?

Hi There.
Thanks so much for your response. Really appreciate it.
That's a lot of traffic you're gaining! Just one question (might be a little naive). Will having a lot of links in comments on blogs look spammy from Google's perspective? Even if you're joining the conversation meaningfully? (And even if they are nofollow)
Isaac.

Because your business and target market is varied, I recommend picking an area of focus while you develop a process, evolve personal best practices, and learn. You have some good suggestions above. Pick on or two areas you can learn the most from, develop a plan, implement it, measure success and progress, and evaluate what's working, what's not working and where there's room for improvement. Adapt and go from there.
In terms of where to start, consider focusing on the product/services and customers you know best. Look to an area that already has established competitors so you can review what they've done well and no so well and learn from them.

Hi Isaac,
The others have already provided some great feedback.
A few other ideas we had include:
1.) Guest blogging on relevant, high-quality websites or inviting other relevant businesses / bloggers to guest blog on your site.
2.) Similarly, reach out to industry leaders / related persons who already have a good following and see if they will do a short interview, give a few tips, etc.
3.) Share articles in newsletters / email blasts
4.) Share your articles via social (which you have already heard) but also consider paid advertising if you really want to invest in traffic. Most social sites have pretty granular targeting so you can reach a really specific audiences and tailor your ads to that specific niche.
5.) Consider trying different blog formats (video, for example) to see if those resonate with your audience more and perform better.
Hope some of these are helpful!

I would use your current customers to expand your influence. Do you have a mailing list built up? Like one person can have hundreds of Facebook friends, one customer can have many more friends that you can tap into. I say use them as a springboard, and run a promotion to get them to share your message and build your follower base several times over. It's pretty simple, quick, and leverages the relationships you already have.
Then, I'd put together some great content you can give away, and start building your list to market to. You seem to have a few different segments here, so I'd strongly recommend marketing to them differently. The business planning-time management crowd likely won't respond the same way as the crafty-fun crowd, so tailor your offers, segment the types of users using different lists, and market appropriately.
Looks like a fun product to market. Enjoy!

One thing I would recommend you is to write comments in the top blogs from your niche, most of thoses blogs allow you to link your website in your name.
The comments need to be good, so that the people that read the comment will join your website to know a little more about you
I´m doing this in my personal blog and im getting 600-800 users per month and those visitors are really interested on my niche, proof of it is the low bounce rate they have
Hope this helps
P.D: Despite you get a link, it doesn´t have to do anything with link building ( link will be nofollow most of the times ), it´s just a practice to gain visibility which is actually working

Facebook Reach on Post Just Spiked!
Yesterday I put a post with a photo on our company Facebook page Normally our reach on a post is 500-600 out of a list of 77,000 followers. However, since posting this one yesterday afternoon, our reach has hit almost 9,000! The only thing different with this post vs. any others we've done is that I put a text link for the company name back to the same Facebook page that the post was put on. I didn't intend to do this, it's just that when I started typing in our company name, Facebook suggested making it a link, so I thought, why not? I'm thinking somehow that made it appear in more people's timelines than usual. We posted it the same time in the day as every other post, and this was the only thing unique about it. Any thoughts?

What percentage of linking root domains is safe for guest posting
Hello, From what I've been experiencing and learning lately, link building seems to be good only in moderation and content marketing - stellar targeted authoritative content - attracting links and pushing it on social channels seems to be much safer. My question is, high quality guest posting - quality sites with good anchor text profile 3+ PR (hopefully more) and one link back from the body of the content to the home page or an article you're pushing - seems good but only in moderation. For high quality guest posting, what would you recommend our percentage of linking root domains to allocating to guest posting. I'm looking for a safe percentage that will hopefully not get devalued any time soon, and any additional advice on making this a good long term balanced strategy. Thanks.

Post Privacy Settings
Facebook says roughly 12% of your friends see your posts. Facebook has privacy settings. Naturally the setting is "public." If you change the setting from public to "Selected List," do you think more of that group of people will get the message? If your public setting has 1,000 friends, and the list contains 200 people, do you think it will generate the post to 12% of the list? Is there anyone interested in testing this? It would make a GREAT blog post! I would certainly read it. If you have any tips to help hit more people on Facebook let me hear it please!

Why would Google+ send posts as 'messages' to people outside of your circles?
A day ago I uploaded a photo of a US Navy ship mooring at Bell Harbor marina, which is across from my office (near the conference center site of SMX Advanced Seattle). A rude comment was posted by someone from Germany accusing me of sending this to them personally, offended because he's anti-military: "Don't spam people pal." I blocked him. So, since it was uploaded to my public stream and shared to my circles, I have no explanation as to how this could happen. If someone in my circles shared it to him, I suppose it could look like I sent it to him, but I haven't seen that happen before. Anyone else see behavior like this? UPDATE: because this person was within one of the circles to whom I shared this photo, he received a notification that I'd shared it "directly" with him. See comment below.

An interesting way to deal with comment spam? (just 4 fun)
About two weeks back I set up a new website called www.gamsatsamplequestions.co.uk. It's a blog where, once a day, I post a set of verbal comprehension-style questions to help students prepare for the GAMSAT (the graduate entry to medicine exam used by universities in UK, Ireland and Australia.) Along with rising traffic, I've recently started to receive spam comments. Before going ahead and activating Akismet or some other spam-blocking app I thought I might have a bit of fun with them.. I took my favourite spam comment (one allegedly about SEO) and wrote up some questions to turn it into a sample GAMSAT reading comprehension It's not the most efficient way of moderating spam comments, and my not-so-subtle bitter rantings are unlikely to deter any future spammers, but I nonetheless had a little bit of fun doing it.. So, my question is, has anybody else experimented with interesting or unique ways of dealing with comment spam? E.g. created a directory of all the people who spam commented you / donated their email addresses to hordes of email marketers / replied with a kindly worded email expressing concern for their well being.. Has anyone stumbled upon anything more fun/efficient than the akismet-style plugins?

How to best promote this content via social media to gain backlinks
I have created this content http://www.musicliveuk.com/live-music/the-worst-function-bands-and-wedding-bands-ever in order to promote it via social media. Ideally I want it to be shared across the web in order to gain backlinks. My question is how can I best do this? I know I can post it on twitter, facebook, google plus etc... but is that it? I'm new to social media and don't really understand how to use it to good effect. By posting it on social networking sites am I risking people copying the content and duplicate content penalties? Any help would be much appreciated!

Is there a way on OSE or any other site to find the 50 most socially shared URLs on a given domain?
I'd love to see which URLs on a specific domain get socially shared the most. I know I can use OSE to say figure out exactly how much social sharing has happened on let's say this URL:
Social Media | | Almonds
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama But what if I want to figure out the top 50 most shared URLs across all of wikipedia.org. Is that possible on OSE or anywhere else? If not, do you have some ideas on how something similar could be achieved?0 -
Google Plus for Website - Should the button be available on the homepage or just blog posts and other sticky content?
I am trying to understand if I should add the Google +1 button to my client's homepages in addition to "sticky" content. Any insight here would be greatly appreciated.
