Code Monitor Recommendations
-
Hi all,
I was wondering if you have any recommendations for a code monitor? We'd like to keep track of any code and content changes on a couple of websites. We've taken a look at Page Monitor: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/page-monitor/pemhgklkefakciniebenbfclihhmmfcd?hl=en but I'm not sure if it tracks code changes? Any suggestions for free or paid tools would be appreciated.
Edit: We'd also like to avoid a tool that requires any tracking code changes or anything that involves a database/FTP connection.

Not really no. I only use it per instance versus as a more constant change tool. If you have a dev in-house though they could probably setup something that runs on a virtual machine and sends reports on changes. Or you could run it after getting a change report from one of the other, more standard types of page change tools to see if the site is now making different HTTP requests as well.

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the great resources. I was just wondering if you had any tips on how best to set up Fiddler to monitor for code changes?
Thanks,
Holly

Some great suggestions above - https://www.codeguard.com/ is also worth considering - relatively cheap and effective.

I've used this one. It checks the code once a day, and no need to install anything.

For something code based, you might have to setup an instance of Fiddler to do that as most page change monitoring tools are just looking at the readable text versus the code. Plus server side code changes that are executed prior to the page being displayed will get missed by either type. Here's some more that might suit your needs...

H1 and Schema Codes Set Up Correctly?
Greetings: It was pointed out to me that the h1 tags on my website (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) all had exactly the same text and that duplication may be contributing to the very low page authority for most URLs. The duplicate h1 appears in line 54-54 (see below) of the home page: www.nyc-officespace-leader.com: itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/LocalBusiness" style="position:absolute;top:-9999em;"> <span<br>itemprop="name">Metro Manhattan Office Space</span<br> <img< p="">But the above refers to schema" so is this really duplicate H1 or is there an exception if the H1 is within a schema? Also, I was told that the company street address and city and state were set up incorrectly as part of an alt tag. However these items also appear as schema in lines 49-68 shown below: Dangerous for me to perform surgery on the code without being certain about these key items!! Could ask my developer, however they may be uncomfortable considering that they set this up in the 1st place. So the view of neutral professionals would be highly welcome! itemprop="address" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/PostalAddress">

Status Codes - Deleted URLs
Hi I have a dev team 'cleaning' their database and from what I can tell deleting old URL's - which they say are not in use. I don't have much visibility on how our URLs are managed in the back end of the site, but my concern is these URLs should never be deleted, they should have a 301, 404 or 410. This includes product pages no longer available and category pages - my concern is losing authority. Am I worrying over nothing or is this a big issue?

Panda 4.0 Update Affected Site - What should be a the minimum Code to Text Ratio we should aim for ?
Hi All, My eCommerce site got hit badly with the Panda 4.0 update so we have been doing some site auditing and analysis identifying issues which need addressing. We have thin/duplicate issues which I am quite sure was part of the reason we were affected by this even though we use rel=next and rel=prev along with having a separate view all page although we don't concanical tag to this page as I dont' think users would benefit from seeing to many items on one page. This led me to look at our Code to Content Ratio. We have now managed to increase it from 9% to approx 18-22% on popular pages by getting rid of unnecessary code etc. My question is , is there an ideal percentage the code to content ratio should be ?.. and what should I be aiming for ? Also any other Panda 4.0 advice would also be appreciated thanks Sarah
