What am i not spotting?
-
A client i'm working with is desperate to rank top for the term 'wholesale jewellery' (it's a UK company and that's the UK spelling). He previously held the top spot but got hit with a penalty and is now bottom of page 1.
So far nothing I have done has had much of an impact despite this being a relatively low competition term. We've fluctuated around the first page for the last few months but the highest we got was 4th before dropping again. The site's domain authority is on par with the site ranking top (who have no content to speak of) and is superior to most other sites on the first page. The site also has similar social metrics to the top ranking site and superior to most others on the first page.
I've focused on building fewer good quality links and some of them have been excellent - DA 80+ and yet, still no movement. On-page optimisation is spot on as well.
A couple of things I have spotted that might be having an impact:
-my client's site has a .com domain where most others have .co.uk
-most sites on the first page have either jewellery, wholesale or both in their domain names
-relevance of linking istes could be playing a part here. My client has links from wholesale sites but few from jewellery-related sites
-within my client's link profile there are very few, if any exact anchor text links for the term 'wholesale jewellery'
-legacy of a penalty could be making ranking progress that much more difficult?
I'd appreciate your input because I've hit a brick wall. The site is http://www.parklaneonline.com

Hello there,
Answers to your questions below
- My client's site has a .com domain where most others have .co.uk
I suspect this isn't the issue. but provided your client is only targeting the UK you might considering setting up geotargeting in Google Webmaster Tools - see: http://moz.com/community/q/geographic-target-set-up-in-google-webmaster-tool
- Most sites on the first page have either jewellery, wholesale or both in their domain names
This is unlikely to be the issue.
- Relevance of linking sites could be playing a part here. My client has links from wholesale sites but few from jewellery-related sites.
Attracting relevant links is never a bad idea, plus even if you don't see ranking improvements you'd hope that relevant links sent good quality traffic. I'd definitely do this if I were you
- Within my client's link profile there are very few, if any exact anchor text links for the term 'wholesale jewellery'
I'd suggest it's unlikely that this is the issue - anchor text is not the ranking signal it once was.
- Legacy of a penalty could be making ranking progress that much more difficult?
I think this is the most likely answer, but I don't quite agree with your phrasing. You mentioned a past penalty - given that you're ranking on the first page I suspect you're not suffering from said penalty any more. However, if you do still have a lot of 'low quality' links, then further clean up might be the way forward.
However, you'll also need to continue to build the sorts of links that Google want to reward (i.e. links which are editorially given from quality sites) in order to improve your rankings.
Incidentally, you mentioned you've disavowed a bunch of links. 3rd party tools (ahrefs, majestic, moz) aren't able to filter these out because they've no access to your disavow files
I hope this helps,
Hannah

Thanks for your response Matt.
A lot of the bad links have been disavowed. Does Ahrefs filter these out?
Perhaps a second round of link cleanup is in order?

It's backlinks holding the site back.
Tons of link spam - check out Majestic historic info. 1926 referring domains, 12,000+ backlinks. Of the 1926 domains, only 800 different subnets. That's a pretty high spam ratio.
If Ahrefs is your tool of choice, check out the referring IPs. Link networks aplenty.
- 36 domains on one IP
- 34 domains on another IP
- 30 domains on another IP
- 29 domains on another IP
- Blogspot spam
As far as onsite, remove the meta keywords, ensure you've geo-targeted in WMT and the onsite should be ok. This is very, very likely backlink network related.

My Take on this:
-my client's site has a .com domain where most others have .co.uk
Google does rank regionally, .com is great, .co.uk would probably be better for UK specific listings. (301 from .com .co.uk would be your best bet)
-most sites on the first page have either jewellery, wholesale or both in their domain names
This is less of a thing than it used to be. Google seems to be starting to favour brand identity over direct keyword rich domains (EMD) - http://moz.com/blog/are-exact-match-domains-in-decline
-relevance of linking istes could be playing a part here. My client has links from wholesale sites but few from jewellery-related sites
Probably not going to be a penalty from this, but relevance might make a difference to just how much extra juice those links provide.
-within my client's link profile there are very few, if any exact anchor text links for the term 'wholesale jewellery'
Probably some effect from this, how much though im not sure (Exact anchor text isnt something i've had to look into before)
-legacy of a penalty could be making ranking progress that much more difficult?
Depends how long ago this was. So long as whatever caused the penalty is fixed, this is probably not an issue now.

I can confirm in Incognito mode you are ranked at the bottom of page 1, but only us SEOs use Incognito mode - not your average Google user.
We had a similar problem and no matter what I did I couldn't get the ranking to change constantly.
The strategy I took, was to look at keywords people we're searching for before the 'money' term and get content to meet the searches needs. Less competition usually so rank higher.
Google will rank sites higher where users have visited before and had a good experience, so if you can get people to your site before they know they are looking for wholesale jewellery, when they come to search the terms as well as you ranking higher, you will also have some brand loyalty so more likely to get clicked.
If we still had keyword data in GA we could prove this theory but I get more organic traffic to the page I was trying to improve.
Hope this helps. While you might not improve in Incognito mode - you will get more organic traffic and more sales.
Hope this is useful.
Thanks
Andy

Why has my website been removed from Bing?
I have a website that has recently been removed from Bing's index, but can't figure out why. The website isn't new, and it is indexed just fine on Google. These are the steps I've tried: The website is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools and successfully submitted the sitemap. I tested the URL to ensure that Bingbot is allowed to crawl the site I submitted URLs to Bing via the URL Submission tool There isn't a "noindex" on the site preventing it from being indexed When I do a URL Inspection, an error message comes up saying "The inspected URL is known to Bing but has some issues which are preventing us from serving it to our users. We recommend you to follow Bing Webmaster Guidelines." I contacted Bing to ask whether the website was removed in error, but received a reply that the website doesn't comply with Bing's quality guidelines, but they wouldn't go into detail as to which guidelines the website isn't meeting. The website URL is https://www.pardeehospital.org. Can anyone offer any advice or insight as to why Bing won't index our site? Thank you!

Why isn't our complete meta title showing up in the Google SERPS? (cut off half way)
We carry a product line, cutless bearings (for use on boats). For instance, we have one, called the Able, that has the following meta title (and searched by View Page Source to confirm): BOOT 1-3/8" x 2-3/8" x 5-1/2" Johnson Cutless Bearing | BOOT Cutlass However, if I search for it on on Google by part number or name (boot cutless bearing, boot cutlass bearing), the meta title comes back with whole first part chopped off, only showing this : "x 5-1/2" Johnson Cutless Bearing | BOOT Cutlass - Citimarine ..." Any idea why? Here's the url if it will hopefully help: https://citimarinestore.com/en/metallic-inches/156-boot-johnson-cutless-bearing-870352103.html All the products in the category are doing the same. Thanks!

Website ranking stuck on 2nd page of google. How to bring it in top 10 position??
Hi I am working on a site indianhomeappliances.in that for search terms such as 'best washing machine in india' appears near the top of the 2nd page of Googl for url https://indianhomeappliances.in/best-washing-machine-in-india/ When looking at what is listed on the 1st page for 'best washing machine in india' I would appreciate any advice/guidance on what else could be done to give the site a final push to get on the 1st page of search results. I have made more than 60 backlinks along with sites from competitor analysis via moz for this page Looking at the sites that are on the 1st page I cant understand why many of them are ranking higher than me? Any insight and plan of attack would be most appreciated from any search experts on the forum. My website is 2.5 months old. Many Thanks

Any Tips for Reviving Old Websites?
Hi, I have a series of websites that have been offline for seven years. Do you guys have any tips that might help restore them to their former SERPs glory? Nothing about the sites themselves has changes since they went offline. Same domains, same content, and only a different server. What has changed is the SERPs landscape. I've noticed competitive terms that these sites used to rank on the first page for with far more results now. I have also noticed some terms result in what seems like a thesaurus similar language results from traditionally more authoritative websites instead of the exact phrase searched for. This concerns me because I could see a less relevant page outranking me just because it is on a .gov domain with similar vocabulary even though the result is not what people searching for the term are most likely searching for. The sites have also lost numerous backlinks but still have some really good ones.

Okay. So I had the top spot for organic rank ( # 1 position ) above the places section. Now it has been eliminated and I am in the top spot for just the places section. What gives?
So i dont just want to be number in the places section.

Duplicate content on ecommerce sites
I just want to confirm something about duplicate content. On an eCommerce site, if the meta-titles, meta-descriptions and product descriptions are all unique, yet a big chunk at the bottom (featuring "why buy with us" etc) is copied across all product pages, would each page be penalised, or not indexed, for duplicate content? Does the whole page need to be a duplicate to be worried about this, or would this large chunk of text, bigger than the product description, have an effect on the page. If this would be a problem, what are some ways around it? Because the content is quite powerful, and is relavent to all products... Cheers,

How to beat Wikipedia article from the top spot on SERPS?
Hi Guys, One of our clients has a good web site with lots of content that is ranked already on #2 for the top keyword (singular and plural) on Google UK. The keyword itself is a competitive one. The top spot is occupied by a wikipedia article that doesn't have much content in general. Can anyone come up with an advice what strategy we have to apply to outplace that article? Thanks!

Can you spot the reasons for our site dropping in rankings so significantly?
We've been racking our brains over this since the recent search engine changes (the notorious and non-cuddley Google Panda update) and have, within reason, corrected as many of the problems that we possibly can yet still our traffic drops further. http://www.bedandbreakfastsguide.com used to rank fairly equally with it's competitors however since the update (and a number of suggestions from another SEO company), the traffic has dropped by about 90% and it's dropped almost completely from the search results (unlike the competitors who are breaking many faux-pars yet remain well ranked). I don't think we're seeing the wood from the trees anymore so I'd be grateful if someone could take a look and see if we've missed anything glaringly obvious? Any thoughts welcome. Thanks Tim Big changes around the same time/since that might be worth noting: Setup a canonical domain name of www.bedandbreakfastsguide.com and (using IIS7) 301 redirect all other traffic over. Setup canonical URL meta tag for all results pages so they point to a single page Moved the redirect page (the one which sends users to the B&B's site) to another subdomain. Redesigned the URLs where possible to use "friendlier" and more keyword rich urls and 301 redirecting for the old urls Added XML sitemaps to the various tools (we found out they weren't there before) Added a robots.txt file Lowercased all urls Where possible removed duplicate results pages and pointed them at a single page Restructured the page titles to be more relevant Setup nofollow on the external urls
