How is Google determining location for geotargeting

Hello,
I have a question related to Geotargeting.
Let's suppose I have a website: mysite.co.uk
As far as I understand Google will consider this site targeted for the UK and will appear on searches preferentially from the UK.What happen now if I have a person located in Spain (with a Spanish IP) and searching in Google.co.uk. Will mysite.co.uk still appear in searches?
What are the factors that Google takes into account for Geotargeting?

Hi Martijn, thank you for your answer. I am basically trying to decide if I should geo-target or language target a website.
From what I understand from your answer (correct if I am wrong), if I geo-target a website for the UK, it will appear in SERP optimally not only if the searcher IP belongs to the UK, but also if the search was done from google.co.uk outside the UK.
I need to get this right, since the market I am in is rather competitive

Good question, there are a lot of factors that Google is taking into account but overall the answer is that it's very likely that your site will still show up in other countries if it's related to the query of the user.
Google is looking at the location of the person doing the query but also at it's language. So if you're deep in Spain but still doing English queries a lot it will easily learn that you're probably interested in English sites.

Setting up international site subdirectories in GSC as separate properties for better geotargeting?
My client has an international website with a subdirectory structure for each country and language version - eg. /en-US. At present, there is a single property set up for the domain in Google Search Console but there are currently various geotargeting issues I’m trying to correct with hreflang tags. My question is, is it still recommended practise and helpful to add each international subdirectory to Google Search Console as an individual property to help with correct language and region tagging? I know there used to be properly sets for this but haven’t found any up to date guidance on whether setting up all the different versions as their own properties might help with targeting. For the “.nl” domain we have an “.be” cache..
Enter “cache:www.dmlights.nl” in your browser to see this result. Following points are already adapted: Sitemap contains hreflang tag Sitemap is moved to the location www.dmlights.nl/sitemap.xml We checked the DNS configuration Changed the Content language in de response header to : Content-Language: nl-NL Removed the cache with webmastertools Resolved serverrequest errors. Does it matter where your web hosts servers are located? For example you're a UK based company and your web hosts servers are in Belgium. Does this effect rankings ?

URL Structure for Multilingual Site With Two Major Locations
We're working on a hotel site that has two major locations. Locations currently live in separate domains. The sites target users from around the world and offer content in multiple languages. The client is looking into migrating all content into one domain and creating sub-folders for each location. The sites are strong in organic search, but they want to expand the keyword portfolio to broader keywords regarding activities, which they also market on their sites. The goal is to scale their domain authority as they have a really strong brand. The question is which would be a preferred URL structure in case content is finally migrated into one domain? - (we have doubts about were the lang folder should be placed as each location has different amenities and services). Here is what we had in mind: domain.com – this is the homepage domain.com/location-1 – to target English visitors domain.com/location-2 – to target English visitors domain.com/es/location-1 – to target Spanish visitors domain.com/es/location-2 – to target Spanish visitors

Google search cache points to and uses content from different url
We have two sites, 1 in new zealand: ecostore.co.nz and 1 in Australia: ecostoreaustralia.com.au Both sites have been assigned with the correct country in Webmaster tools Both site use the same urls structure and content for product and category pages Both sites run off the same server in the US but have unique ip adresses. When I go to google.com.au and search for: site:ecostoreaustralia.com.au I get results which google says are from the Australian domain yet on closer inspection it is actually drawing content from the NZ website. When I view a cached page the URL bar displays the AU domain name but on the page (in the top grey box) it says: _This is Google's cache of http://www.ecostore.co.nz/pages/our-highlights. _ Here is the link to this page: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Zg_CYkqyjP4J:www.ecostoreaustralia.com.au/pages/our-highlights+&cd=7&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au In the last four weeks the ranking of the AU website has dropped significantly and the NZ site now ranks first in Google AU, where before the AU site was listed first. Any idea what is going wrong here?

Google results inverted in a different country
Hi My site and a rival site are bothl UK based. If I search google.co.uk for a keyword I'm above him, yet if I search the australian results, he's on top. How come? I'd really like to put this right and grind his face into the dirt -- if only as revenge for repeatedly stealing my web content. Thanks
