Wordpress Category Archives - Index - but will this cause duplication?
-
Okay something I am struggling with
Using YOAST - but have a recipe blog -
However the category archives have /are being optimized and indexed as I am adding custom content to them , then listing the recipes below.
My question is if I am indexing the Category Archives and using these to add custom content above - then allows the recipe excerpts from the category to be listed underneath - will these recipe excerpts be picked up as duplicate content?
-
This should be totally fine. It's pretty common blog/wordpress practice to have excerpts on a category page and then the full article/recipe on that individual page.
Also, just to dispel a myth there is no duplicate content "penalty" - so nothing to fear from that standpoint anyway - just try to make each page have a distinct purpose, which they do. The category page allows users to browse all the recipes in that category and choose which to view. The recipe page allows users to view the whole recipe and use it to hopefully cook something tasty

Often in a cookbook, there are different sections like breads, cakes, and cookies. Each might start out with a page or two explaining general rules about choosing and preparing that type of food and also contain a listing of recipes specific to the sections, with brief descriptions, so the reader can get an idea of what each recipe is for.
If that is what you are doing with your website, I wouldn't worry about duplicate content. If there is a good amount of original content at the top, and then short excerpts to explain what the links are about, you should be fine. As Andy said, just be sure the pages themselves are good pages and the amount of text you duplicate in your recipe descriptions is fairly short. [You could even write custom descriptions for the links, rather than using excerpts. Something to tempt the readers to read more...]

Hi Kelly,
will these recipe excerpts be picked up as duplicate content?
Yes, it is likely that crawlers will see it as duplicate content, but that doesn't necessarily equate to an issue for you. How are you finding that they are being indexed? Are they appearing well in the SERPs? Is the additional content on the pages just there to satisfy Google, or is it genuinely useful?
You could also reduce the excerpt size so the levels of duplication aren't as high.
You also need to look at the page and decide how / why you are optimising the pages. Is it just to gain more keywords and then funnel people to other articles? If so, you may fall foul of the Doorway Penalty. I posted this in another question a short while ago:
Here are questions to ask of pages that could be seen as doorway pages:
- Is the purpose to optimize for search engines and funnel visitors into the actual usable or relevant portion of your site, or are they an integral part of your site’s user experience?
- Are the pages intended to rank on generic terms yet the content presented on the page is very specific?
- Do the pages duplicate useful aggregations of items (locations, products, etc.) that already exist on the site for the purpose of capturing more search traffic?
- Are these pages made solely for drawing affiliate traffic and sending users along without creating unique value in content or functionality?
- Do these pages exist as an “island?” Are they difficult or impossible to navigate to from other parts of your site? Are links to such pages from other pages within the site or network of sites created just for search engines?
If you answer yes to any of those, then it might not just be duplicate content that is your issue.

.com geotagging redirect to subdomains - will it affect SEO?
Hi guys, We have a .com domain and we've got geoIP on it, so UK goes to .co.uk and USA goes to .com/us We're just migrating over to another platform so we're thinking of keeping a "dummy" server just to do this geoIP pointing for us. Essentially .com will just point over to the right place and hold a specific .com/abc (which is generic for everyone worldwide) Current Scenario:
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | Infruition
.com (Magento + geoIP)
.com/us (US Magento)
.co.uk (UK - geoIP redirect to Shopify)
.com/abc (sits on Magento server) Wanted Scenario:
.com - used for GEOIP and a specific .com/abc (for all users)
.co.uk (UK) - Shopify eCom
.com/us -> migration to us.xx.com (USA) - Shopify eCom I just wanted to know if this will affect our rankings on google? Also, any advice as to the best practises here would be great. Thanks! Nitesh0 -

Should I report this to Google and will anything happen ?
Hi, I am working with a client and have discovered that a direct competitor has hidden the clients business name in meta information and also hidden the name on the page but off to the side. My intention is to ask the company to remove the content, but the client would like me to report it to Google. Is this a waste of time and what request in webmaster tools should I use. The name is not a trademark but the business name is not generic and it is an obvious attempt to target my clients business. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advance

Are duplicate item titles harmful to my ecommerce site?
Hello everyone, I have an online shopping site selling, amongst other items, candles. We have lots of different categories within the LED candles category. One route a customer can take is homepage > LED candles > Tealights. Within the tealights category we have 7 different products which vary only in colour. It is necessary to create separate products for each colour since we have fantastic images for each colour. To target different keywords, at present we have different titles (hence different link texts, different URLs and different H1 tags) for each colour, for example "Battery operated LED candles, amber", "Flameless candles, red" and "LED tealights, blue". I was wondering if different titles to target different keywords is a good idea. Or, is it just confusing to the customer and should I just stick with a generic item title which just varies by colour (eg. "LED battery candles, colour")? If I do the latter, am I at risk of getting downranked by Google since I am duplicating the product titles/link texts/URLs/H1 tags/img ALTs? (the description and photos for each colour are unique). Sorry if this is a little complicated - please ask and I can clarify anything...because I really want to give the best customer experience but still preserve my Google ranking. I have attached screenshots of the homepage and categories to clarify, feel free to go on the site live too. Thank you so much, Pravin BqFCp.jpg KC2wB.jpg BEcfX.jpg

Index page de-indexed / banned ?
Yesterday google removed our index page from the results. Today they also removed language subdomains (fr.domain.com).. Index page, subdomains are not indexed anymore. Any suggestions? -- No messages in GWT. No malware. Backlink diversification was started in May. Never penguilized or pandalized. Last week had the record of all times of daily UV. Other pages still indexed and driving traffic, left around 40% of total. Never used any black SEO tool. 95% of backlinks are related; sidebar, footer links No changes made of index page for couple months.

New layout looks funny with JS disabled - long vertical line up of products(Perhaps important keywords/ content in new layout appears way down?)
Lot of 'clunk' has been removed (bits of text, links, images, etc) Thanks for checking this out.0 -
Will Google Penalize Content put in a Div with a Scrollbar?
I noticed Moosejaw was adding quite a bit of content to the bottom of category pages via a div tag that makes use of a scroll bar. Could a site be penalized by Google for this technique? Example: http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/search_Patagonia-Clothing____
