Impact of May 2015 quality update and July Panda update on specialty brands or niche retail
-
We are seeing the following trend in our rankings and traffic after the recent Google algorithm updates (May 2015 quality/phantom, and July 2015 Panda), and I am curious if anyone here has encountered similar and/or has any good ideas on how to react.
Background - we operate in a niche segment, but compete for keywords with large home improvement stores and mass retailers.
In the past, prior to May 2015, we generally ranked higher than the large home improvement stores and mass retailers for our key specific terms in our niche. We believed that it was because we have a very specialized focus and so our store was highly relevant for someone searching in that niche (for example for the name of the product category as a keyword). In general, we ranked #1-3. Along with a few of our competitors in our niche. And then would be the big box home improvement stores in spots 5-10.
The change we saw starting in May is that now all the home improvement stores and also a few large multi-category retailers took over those top 5 spots and bumped all the specialty retailers and the specialty brand manufacturers (like us) down. Our direct competitors in our niche all seem to have been impacted pretty much the same as us.
So, in summary it seems like these latest updates may have favored the more general retailers but with stronger domain authority than the more specific but smaller retailers. Hard to know for sure, but this is the trend we believe we see.
So, that said, what are some good strategies to respond to this situation? We can't really compete on overall domain authority with these huge retailers. And our previously successful strategy of having a very focused niche, with lots of helpful content, videos, instructional guides, etc. no longer seems to be enough.
Has anyone else seen similar results since this past May? Where specialty retail or brand sites lost ground to larger general retailers? And if so, has anyone found any good strategies to gain back their previous rankings, or at least partially?

Unfortunately, this is an incredibly complex situation (in many cases) with no easy answer. Unlike a penalty or typical Panda update, this sounds more like a signal change favoring one type of site over another (one set of signals over another). I'm not going to say "big brands", because that carries a lot of assumptions and baggage, but there are certainly signals that tend to be correlated with more powerful brands.
If Google really just decided to change their preference, there's not a lot to be done. You may have done nothing wrong, per se, and it's hard to fix something that isn't broken. In that case, you've got a few options, SEO-wise:
(1) Hunt for greener pastures. You may have to find new, long-tail keywords where the bigger brands aren't playing. This is a big project beyond the scope of Q&A, but there are cases where you do need to go after new targets.
(2) Re-evaluate your keywords based on impact/traffic/conversion instead of ranking. It's possible, in some cases, that big brands could dominate the Top 5, but that, for some reason, you're still getting decent CTR on certain keywords. Do that analysis before you give up on these keywords.
(3) Hang in there. Sorry, it sounds like lame advice, but these kinds of updates often go back and forth, and you could see Google tweaking the mix over the next few months. In other words, whatever tactical shifts you make, don't completely cut off the pages/tactics that were ranking before (just in case).
All of that said, it's often the case that the situation is a bit grayer, and Google has made this shift because of quality issues it saw across a large number of sites. It's hard to speak in generalities, but Panda updates have gradually been harder on certain types of pages, like product categories, because these are often fairly thin (search results, etc.). If all of the smaller players took a similar approach, it's possible you all got devalued at once, and there may be a way to fix that.
Unfortunately, that kind of fix is really hard to advise on without at least some sense of the keywords/pages in question. I guess my main point is that it's easy to say "Google gave big brands all the rankings!" and see red, which can make you miss the few things you might have power to change.

Dislodged own ranking with poorer quality page?
Hi, So last week we where ranking within the top two pages for google for a results page at something like rank 21 - https://www.whichledlight.com/t/g9-led-bulbs We have been tracking this page and earned a few decent domain authority links here. Today when the new rankings came in it looks like a blog page we wrote a while back has jumped several pages to number 13 in the rankings - ok so not the end of the world BUT our results page seems to have disappeared from the rankings. You can see from the screen shot in the attached link at some point Moz / Google has noted that both the pages are relevent in some capaicty. Has Google decided that because both pages are from the site and both are showing ranking signals for the same traffic that one should go? It also seems weird that this blog one would come from nowhere to rank so highly in the course of a week. Perhaps they have changed their algorithm? This is a bit of a concern for us as it is unclear whats happened - especially after we where so close to getting to page one for a valued search term. SBZRaIq

Do low quality subdomains affect the ranking performance/quality of a root domain?
Hi, Late last year the company I work for launched two new websites that, at the time, we believed were completely separate from our main website. The two new websites were set up externally and were not well-planned from an SEO perspective (LOTS of duplicate content) - hence, they have struggled to rank on Google. Since the launch of the new websites we have also noticed that our main website (that previously ranked very well) has suffered a decline in visitation and search engine rank. We initially attributed this to a number of factors, including the state of the market, and ramped up our SEO efforts (seeing minor improvement). We have since realised that these two new websites have been set up as subdomains of our main website, with MOZ displaying the same domain authority and root domain backlink profile. My question is, do poor quality subdomains affect the ranking performance of a root domain? I have not yet managed to find a definitive answer. Please let me know if more information is required - I am quite new to the whole SEO concept. Thanks! Amy

Should sitewise links always be branded
Hello, A client has 8 sitewide links with the same anchor text - their main keyword. They have 84 linking root domains total. 3 of the 8 are his own sites. 4 of the sitewide links are in the footer (all 3 of his own sites interlink in the footer) In the last 5 months, rankings for the the top 2 short-tail keywords have dropped even though they should rank higher. In a few days they're going to do some major rearranging with one of the 8, adding nofollows sitewide because of a partnership disagreement. Would there be any negative consequences, do you think, to right away changing all of the footer links of the 3 sites that the site owner owns to branded anchor text (domain.com)? Should we change all the sitewides to branded anchor text? There have been no problems in GWT.

Why google does not show my site on my branding keyword?
Hi, I am the site owner of http://www.lankahq.net. It is a youtube video hosted website. 95% of the video contents are daily telecasting TV shows and categorized to make easy to find the specific video of the day of preferred program of the viewer. About 1 year ago suddenly disappeared my site from the google. Before happened that it was performing very well in search. Google showed my site contents within few minutes after I update in their search results when someone search for that. At the moment it does not show even some one search for "lankahq". It showing only if search for "lankahq.net", "lankahq.com" or "www.lankahq.net" something like a search keyword related to my domain name. Some other websites have added my branding keyword LankaHQ as a user of their site and they showing on top of Google. But not mine. It is much appreciated if someone can have a look on this matter. I can not find where is the problem.

Reality of Panda 3.9 Refresh
I have had a 10 page website(registered in 1999) rank for my top keywords(top 5) for over 4 years. No changes have been made to the website. (Static website). July 11, 2012, most of the keywords, and all the major keywords were dropped from Google. They remain steady in Bing and Yahoo. I saw that some people referred to a Panda 3.9 refresh on that day, but also saw that Google(Matt Cutts) denied the refresh. Given the simplicity of the website and the strong backlinks, which remain, what are other reasons I could see a drastic drop in 1 day. Any ideas on where to target my search for solving this very serious issue? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Whether our shared articles caused Panda hit to our high quality site
Hello, We are a quality site hit by Panda Our article collection: http://www.nlpca(dot)com/DCweb/NLP_Articles.html is partially articles written by the site owners and partially articles that are elsewhere on them web. We have permission to post every article, but I don't know if Google knows that. Could this be why we were hit by Panda? And if so, what do we do? We've dropped way down in rank but have worked our way half-way back up. Two of our main keywords are: NLP NLP Training Thanks!

Brand new domain with a lot of old links.
So I just bought http://penny-auctions.co/ a couple of days ago, ignore the fact it's not set up yet and generally just a mess, and something kept bugging me about why the domain authority kept showing as 25 in the SEOmoz toolbar. Now initially I'd set it up as www. and with the trailing slash so the PA was 1, however after a bit of exploration it seems that someone has been building links to the non-www version of the domain for at least a year! The site has never been owned before so I've now made the non-www version the default and have a 5 day old site with PA 35 and DA 25! SEOmoz shows PA - 45 links, 20 domains and DA - 341 links, 113 domains. Majestic Historic - 8598 links, 236 domains and Fresh - 160 links, 62 domains. Brilliant! Except they're all spamtastic. What do you think this will do for my future attempts at ranking? Should I create pages that have links to them or just 301 them?
