Google updates... keeping with times?
-
We know about Panda... Penguin... Hummingbird... but I heard another major update is going to happen. Where do you find out the google updates ahead of time? Maybe a stupid question.
-
Unfortunately, the short answer is that we rarely know ahead of time. When I first envisioned MozCast, my hope was that we had a chance (even if a slim chance) of predicting updates, but there's a simple and obvious reality I overlooked. Google isn't a system of natural laws, spinning on its merry way. Google is being reprogrammed daily, and past updates are no indication of future patterns. We can look to their intent and goals, and make educated guesses, but none of us can say that on October 14, 2015, there will be Update X.
On rare occasion, like the Mobile-friendly Update, Google will make an announcement. Usually, you can find those on the Google Webmaster Central blog:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/
In other cases, a member of the Search Quality team may drop a hint on social media. With 600+ changes per year, though, those pre-announcements are the rare exception.

I personally check webmasterworld.com, they have a Google Updates and SERP Changes thread for each month.

The Infernal Google Hotel Finder
Good Morning Mozzers, I currently have a client who is trying to place ads on Google Hotel Finder. I've recently conducted a great deal of research on this topic, but I'm still struggling to find anything definitive in terms of creating ads for the property I represent. Likewise, I've noticed that my client's property is ranking very poorly for a number of keyword terms when you click "more places" on the search results page. In short, I need to achieve two items (AND FAST...): being able to create ads for the property on Google Hotel Finder, and figuring out how to get the property to rank more highly in the "more places" section of the search results page. Quite frankly, we are willing to do any and all things necessary at this point to expedite the process. Any and all insight/recommendations would be great! Thank you all so much for reading, I look forward to hearing your comments!

When you think you know Google, but realise you don't
I've just typed "Private Investigator" into Google, location set to "Coleshill" (it's near Birmingham!)
Local SEO | | Solid_Web
The search results were surprising:
Position 6: birmingham-privateinvestigators.co.uk
Position 8: privateinvestigator-coventry.co.uk Both sites are the same source of information altered to suit the city - INCREDIBLY SPAMMY. They are just full of SEO text stuffing. No doubt any city you enter they will appear with [city]-privateinvestigators.co.uk..
How are they ranking with such old-skool dirty SEO tactics? You can't say they will be found eventually, because Google has released algorithm after algorithm updates to penalise sites like this. Could it be the importance of having a local phone number and (supposedly) physical address?0 -
Google Webmaster and Multi Country
Lets say I have: www.domain.com/au www.domain.com/uk www.domain.com/nz In Webmaster, should each of those be setup as a separate site, targeted to the relevant country? Does the country targeting in Webmaster bear much weight? Cheers 🙂

Does having /search/ in your URLs for searches within your site hamper these URLs from coming up on Google SERP's?
We are an aggregate site for a particular category and have our own internal search wherein visitors can search for local references to services that they are looking for. We use SOLR search and our results page for the "Tag123" search would look like www.mywebsite.com/city/search/tag123 For some reason, we see that these pages are all indexed on Google but they do not come up on SERPs appropriately! The content is unique and we also have appropriate title and description tags on these pages.

Have you heard of any white hat methods for influencing Google's auto suggest/auto complete?
We have a client who has a "friend" who says he can get keyword phrases that include their business name to show up in Google's auto suggest when doing a search. We have not heard much about this and are skeptical to these claims as we know how Google comes up with these suggested keyword phrases. Wondering if anyone in the community heard much about tactics to influence auto suggest/auto complete and would like to know your opinion about it.
