Same page Anchor Links vs Internal Link (Cannibalisation)
-
Hey Mozzers,
I have a very long article page that supports several of my sub-category pages. It has sub-headings that link out to the relevant pages. However the article is very long and to make it easier to find the relevant section I was debating adding inpage anchor links in a bullet list at the top of the page for quick navigation.
PAGE TITLE
- Keyword 1
- Keyword 2 etc
<a name="'Keyword1"></a>
Keyword 1
Content
<a name="'Keyword2"></a>Keyword 2
Content
Because of the way my predecessor wrote this article, its section headings are the same as the sub-categories they link out to and boost (not ideal but an issue I will address later).
What I wondered is if having the inpage achor would confuse the SERPS because they would be linking with the same keyword.
My worry is that by increasing userbility of the article by doing this I also confuse them SERPS
First I tell them that this section on my page talk about keyword 1. Then from in that article i tell them that a different page entirely is about the same keyword.
Would linking like this confuse SERPS or are inpage anchor links looked upon and dealt with differently?

No worries
Don't forget that both rel=canonical and internal linking can send good signals to Google in terms of which page is prominent. A 301 (if used) can be reversed out of if you ever need to do a semi-permanent redirect, but these days, rel=canonical does pretty much the same.

Hi Andy, thanks for the answer
I think you have understood me.
Basically the article page needs completely re-writing and restructuring into a supporting article rather than what is is now, which just a well ranking page competing with my landing pages. I know this but until I can decide on the best way to utilise the current content which is good, and write replacement content as I want to keep the page I have done a sort of temporary fix.
This temporary fix was to link out to relevant landing pages in an attempt to signal "This is my actual page about this" etc. This has worked well and has boosted my landing pages and has began spreading the traffic were receiving around the site. But is still some cannibalisation going on.
Until i rewrite it, i want to make navigating the article easier to get some movement around the site. By doing what i mention above, however it means creating inpage links that will be linking to headings with the same keywords that link out to other pages in on the site.
You have confirmed the big fix and what I need to do when i can spare the time.
From my understanding from what you say, the inpage anchors will send signals to google and how I was planning on using them whilst adding userbility will be treated like a new page so would have a negative effect on what im trying to do.
I think I will leave it be until I can free up enough time to re-write the article properly.
Thanks again for a good response.

Hi,
...are inpage anchor links looked upon and dealt with differently
I would be trying to name your anchor texts as something a little more than just a Keyword. Try and make it answer a short question if you can so that the link makes sense to both the user and Google.
Anchors are handled like a new page if Google decides to index them, which is why you should try and have these as something that is more of a benefit add to the page, rather than anything too short and simple as a keyword. It will satisfy Google and also remove the worry of any issues.
There is no problem in running with a 'quick skip to content' as it will help with usability. Anything you can do to increase that is good.
I hope I have understood what you are asking correctly?

Would You Redirect a Page if the Parent Page was Redirected?
Hi everyone! Let's use this as an example URL: https://www.example.com/marvel/avengers/hulk/ We have done a 301 redirect for the "Avengers" page to another page on the site. Sibling pages of the "Hulk" page live off "marvel" now (ex: /marvel/thor/ and /marvel/iron-man/). Is there any benefit in doing a 301 for the "Hulk" page to live at /marvel/hulk/ like it's sibling pages? Is there any harm long-term in leaving the "Hulk" page under a permanently redirected page? Thank you! Matt

Duplicate page content on numerical blog pages?
Hello everyone, I'm still relatively new at SEO and am still trying my best to learn. However, I have this persistent issue. My site is on WordPress and all of my blog pages e.g page one, page two etc are all coming up as duplicate content. Here are some URL examples of what I mean: http://3mil.co.uk/insights-web-design-blog/page/3/ http://3mil.co.uk/insights-web-design-blog/page/4/ Does anyone have any ideas? I have already no indexed categories and tags so it is not them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Linking to own homepage with keywords as link text
I recently discovered, that previous SEO work on a client's website apparently included setting links from subpages to the homepage using keywords as link text that the whole website should rank for. i.e. (fictional example) a subpage about chocolate would link to the homepage via "Visit the best sweet shop in Dallas and get a free sample." I am dubious about the influence this might have - anybody with any tests? I also think that it is quite weird when considering user friendliness - at least I would not expect such a link to take me to the homepage of the very site I was just on, probably browsing in a relevant page. So, what about such links: actually helpful, mostly don't matter or even potentially harmful? Looking forward to your opinions! Nico

How to handle broken links to phantom pages appearing in webmaster tools
Hi,Would love to hear different experiences and thoughts on this one. We have a site that is plagued with 404's in the Webmaster Tools. A significant number of them have never existed, for instance affiliates have linked to them with the wrong URL or scraper sites have linked to them with a truncated version of the URL and an ellipsis eg; /my-nonexistent... What's the best way to handle these? If we do nothing and mark as fixed, they reappear in the broken links report. If we 301 redirect and mark as fixed they reappear. We tried 410 (gone forever) and marking as fixed; they re-appeared. We have a lot of legacy broken links and we would really like to clean up our WMT broken link profile - does anyone know of a way we can make these links to non extistent pages disappear once and for all? Many thanks in advance!

URLs: Removing duplicate pages using anchor?
I've been working on removing duplicate content on our website. There are tons of pages created based on size but the content is the same. The solution was to create a page with 90% static content and 10% dynamic, that changed depending on the "size" Users can select the size from a dropdown box. So instead of 10 URLs, I now have one URL. Users can access a specific size by adding an anchor to the end of the URL (?f=suze1, ?f=size2) For e.g: Old URLs. www.example.com/product-alpha-size1 www.example.com/product-alpha-size2 www.example.com/product-alpha-size3 www.example.com/product-alpha-size4 www.example.com/product-alpha-size5 New URLs www.example.com/product-alpha-size1 www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?f=size2 www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?f=size3 www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?f=size4 www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?f=size5 Do search engines read the anchor or drop them? Will the rank juice be transfered to just www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?

How to know when do use singular vs plural in anchor text and on-page copy?
I'm building out a specific section of our site and I want to make sure I target it correctly. Is there a rule of thumb when to know how to use "car" vs "cars"? (as an example) Is there a specific way to research the right approach? thank you!

What causes internal pages to have a page rank of 0 if the home page is PR 5?
The home page PageRank is 5 but every single internal page is PR 0. Things I know I need to address each page has 300 links (Menu problem). Each article has 2-3 duplicates caused from the CMS working on this now. Has anyone else had this problem before? What things should I look out for to fix this issue. All internal linking is follow there is no page rank sculpting happening on the pages.
