Duplicate content
-
Hello mozzers,
I have an unusual question. I've created a page that I am fully aware that it is near 100% duplicate content. It quotes the law, so it's not changeable. The page is very linkable in my niche. Is there a way I can build quality links to it that benefit my overall websites DA (i'm not bothered about the linkable page being ranked) without risking panda/dupe content issues?
Thanks,
Peter

Using Noindex is a solution to prevent any problems,
but what about linking to your original (law) source? The page could be indexed and as long as you have enough good quality content on your website you should not have any trouble i think.
CleverPHD makes a good point about writing some text of your own!

If you have to quote the law, then why not make the page more unique and provide more analysis around it. Why not add information from other laws and legal input. Nothing is ever 100% original. All modern science is built upon the "shoulders of giants", they reference previous works and expand from there, but very commonly, summarizing (known as a meta analysis) is a new way of looking at old data and is considered original and helpful.
Say you needed to quote the law on drunk driving in a particular city. You probably need to not just quote the law, but answer the question, "If I get pulled over for drunk driving, what should I do?" "If I need a lawyer what should I do?" "How do I find a good lawyer who specializes in drunk driving?" Show stats on how many drunk driving offenses occur in that particular city and suburbs. You get the idea. If it is appropriate quote the law and then link back to the government page that you found it on. Shoot a video with an expert talking about all these things - you get the idea.
None of the individual pieces are "original" per se, but pulling it all together is, and this is not only helpful to the user (who now does not have to spend all this time researching), but you have a great page that covers a nice range of keywords related to drunk driving laws. The page I mention above is a very linkable and shareable page on the topic.
Quote the law, link to the reference, but build content around it and you can potentially rank for it.
Good luck!

Hi Peter,
First of all, I would ensure the page is noindexed as this will prevent issues. As long as the page is followed (don't set nofollow) then page rank will flow from this. All noindex does is prevent Google from showing the page. However, this will only benefit other pages linked from there as you will get pass-through page rank - Google isn't going to rank a noindexed page or one that is just duplication.
Is there a way I can build quality links to it that benefit my overall websites DA
So to answer your question, yes.
Alternatively, try and get people to link to your homepage?

Duplicate content when working with makes and models?
Okay, so I am running a store on Shopify at the address https://www.rhinox-group.com. This store is reasonably new, so being updated constantly! The thing that is really annoying me at the moment though, is I am getting errors in the form of duplicate content. This seems to be because we work using the machine make and model, which is obviously imperative, but then we have various products for each machine make and model. Have we got any suggestions on how I can cut down on these errors, as the last thing I want is being penalised by Google for this! Thanks in advance, Josh

We have 2 versions of URLs. we have the mobile and the desktop. is that a duplicate content?
Hi, Our website has two version of URLs. dektop: www.myexample.com and mobile www.myexample.com/m If you go to our site from a mobile device you will land on our mobile URL, if you go to our site from desktop computer you will land on a regular URL. Both urls have the same content. Is that considered duplicate? If yes, then what can I do to fix it? Also, both URLs are indexed by google. We have two separate XML sitemaps- one for desktop and one for mobile. Is that a good SEO practice?

Duplicate Content Issue
Very strange issue I noticed today. In my SEOMoz Campaigns I noticed thousands of Warnings and Errors! I noticed that any page on my website ending in .php can be duplicated by adding anything you want to the end of the url, which seems to be causing these issues. Ex: Normal URL - www.example.com/testing.php Duplicate URL - www.example.com/testing.php/helloworld The duplicate URL displays the page without the images, but all the text and information is present, duplicating the Normal page. I Also found that many of my PDFs seemed to be getting duplicated burried in directories after directories, which I never ever put in place. Ex: www.example.com/catalog/pdfs/testing.pdf/pdfs/another.pdf/pdfs/more.pdfs/pdfs/ ... when the pdfs are only located in a pdfs directory! I am very confused on how to fix this problem. Maybe with some sort of redirect?

Block Quotes and Citations for duplicate content
I've been reading about the proper use for block quotes and citations lately, and wanted to see if I was interpreting it the right way. This is what I read: http://www.pitstopmedia.com/sem/blockquote-cite-q-tags-seo So basically my question is, if I wanted to reference Amazon or another stores product reviews, could I use the block quote and citation tags around their content so it doesn't look like duplicate content? I think it would be great for my visitors, but also to the source as I am giving them credit. It would also be a good source to link to on my products pages, as I am not competing with the manufacturer for sales. I could also do this for product information right from the manufacturer. I want to do this for a contact lens site. I'd like to use Acuvue's reviews from their website, as well as some of their product descriptions. Of course I have my own user reviews and content for each product on my website, but I think some official copy could do well. Would this be the best method? Is this how Rottentomatoes.com does it? On every movie page they have 2-3 sentences from 50 or so reviews, and not much unique content of their own. Cheers, Vinnie

Duplicate content, how to solve?
I have about 400 errors about duplicate content on my seomoz dashboard. However I have no idea how to solve this, I have 2 main scenarios of duplication in my site: Scenario 1: http://www.theprinterdepo.com/catalogsearch/advanced/result/?name=64MB+SDRAM+DIMM+MEMORY+MODULE&sku=&price%5Bfrom%5D=&price%5Bto%5D=&category= 3 products with the same title, but different product models, as you can note is has the same price as well. Some printers use a different memory product module. So I just cant delete 2 products. Scenario 2: toners http://www.theprinterdepo.com/brother-high-capacity-black-toner-cartridge-compatible-73 http://www.theprinterdepo.com/brother-high-capacity-black-toner-cartridge-compatible-75 In this scenario, products have a different title but the same price. Again, in this scenario the 2 products are different. Thank you

How can i see the pages that cause duplicate content?
SEOmoz PRO is giving me back duplicate content errors. However, i don't see how i can get a list of pages that are duplicate to the one shown. If i don't know which pages/urls cause the issue i can't really fix it. The only way would be placing canonical tags but that's not always the best solution. Is there a way to see the actual duplicate pages?
