Domain Change behind Drop in DA from 49 to 9?
-
Hi,
We have recently gone through a domain change and thought we had done this by the book. We 301'd the old site extensively and optimized our new site as best we can. All done with the help of a leading agency.
However our old site had a DA score of 49 and checking our new site's DA almost 3 months after the changes its scores 9!
Furthermore with rankings 2-3wks after the change we saw small drops (1-3 positions), 3-10 weeks saw more gradual slides but remaining page 1 for most terms. Currently some core terms are slipping back to page 2.
I have the below question on this and would like you to get your opinions and views.
-
After a well planned domain change would its be expected that the DA score would remain in the same region or is a drop like this normal?
-
Is the domain change the most likely cause of this drop or are there other factors that may cause this?
-
What is the best approach for trouble shooting this situation?

Thanks Thomas, yes i guess this may well be the reason. We had the new URL live for a period of 3-4 months before we made the 301 of the old site so the score of 9 may be from the new site being scored before the actual change is my assumptions... I've checked other software to now like Majestic and Ahrefs and scores in these are similar to pre domain change.

This could possibly be due to: https://moz.com/community/q/10-14-mozscape-index-update-details
See the following snippet: "Second, many PA/DA and other metric scores will look very similar to the last index because we lost and had problems with some metrics in processing (and believe that much of what we calculated may have been erroneous). We're using metrics from the prior index (which had good correlations with Google, etc) until we can feel confident that the new ones we're calculating are correct."

Single domain or a subfolder?
One of my clients is wondering whether they should move they stand alone business website to a subfolder of their brand website. For example, from http://www.johnlewisforbusiness.com to http://www.johnlewis.com/business. Do you guys think it's a good idea from SEO point of view? Can you recommend any articles on this? What is the expected loss of current value by changing domain and migrating URLs?

Image URL Change Catastrophe
We have a site with over 3mm pages indexed, and an XML sitemap with over 12mm images (312k indexed at peak). Last week our traffic dropped off a cliff. The only major change we made to the site in that time period was adding a DNS record for all of our images that moved them from a SoftLayer Object Storage domain to a subdomain of our site. The old URLs still work, but we changed all the links from across our site to the new subdomain. The big mistake we made was that we didn't update our XML sitemap to the new URLs until almost a week after the switch (totally forgot that they were served from a process with a different config file). We believe this was the cause of the issue because: The pages that dropped in traffic were the ones where the images moved, while other pages stayed more or less the same. We have some sections of our property where the images are, and have always been, hosted by Amazon and their rankings didn't crater. Same with pages that do not have images in the XML sitemap (like list pages). There wasn't a change in geographic breakdown of our traffic, which we looked at because the timing was around the same time as Pigeon. There were no warnings or messages in Webmaster Tools, to indicate a manual action around something unrelated. The number of images indexed in our sitemap according Webmaster Tools dropped from 312k to 10k over the past week. The gap between the change and the drop was 5 days. It takes Google >10 to crawl our entire site, so the timing seems plausible. Of course, it could be something totally unrelated and just coincidence, but we can't come up with any other plausible theory that makes sense given the timing and pages affected. The XML sitemap was updated last Thursday, and we resubmitted it to Google, but still no real change. Anyone had a similar experience? Any way to expedite the climb back to normal traffic levels? Domain Forwarding for SEO
Hey guys, I recently created a new website for a client who was ranking #1 for the term "jupiter obgyn" but they have now dropped down to #4. This happened because their old home page was at www. instead of just jupiterobgyn.com. When you type in the www. version, it does take you to the root domain but it's not carrying the old PA! The www. version of the page had a 22 PA and the new root domain hosted page is a 1. How can I fix it so that "link juice" carries over? Is this something i need to do in 1and1 (their web host) or within Wordpress? Thanks!!!

Multiple domains?
I do own a domain for my business right now, and would have a few questions, regarding the increase or traffic for my website and getting new business 1. Is it worth to purchase multiple domains, keyword search relevant, to my business? 2. If so how is the best way to use it? : have them redirect to my own website? a specific type of redirect? do I make a separate website for each of them? 3. for ex if the keyword is " tile and grout". I figured would be best to own "tileandgrout.com". How about "tile-and-grout.com"? thank you in advance

Losing Rank As A Result Of Domain Change
I have a client who is wishing to switch from an established, but unattractive domain, to a domain he just purchased that is more attractive. For example purposes, his existing site is "His-Company-Website.com" and the site he just purchased and wants to transfer to is "HisCompanyWebsite.com." The only difference is the old site has hyphens in between the words and the new one does not. He is not making this choice from an SEO perspective, but more of a "I don't want to keep saying all those hyphens when telling people about my website." But he said he doesn't want to lose his search engine rankings as a result. So he knows this won't necessarily increase his ranks, but doesn't want them to drop as a result. When speaking with him, I thought we could simply toss in a 301 redirect at the root level and pipe them over to the other site, but he wanted some actual proof. I went back to look at what I thought would be a similar case that I did earlier in the year (transferring from a .net to a .com) and noticed that we did see some rather substantial drops in at least traffic, so I am not so sure about this plan any longer. So my questions for my far more insightful colleagues... What would be your suggestion on this problem? Transition to the more user friendly domain or stick with the unfriendly domain? If he does elect to transition to the new domain, what all can I do to preserve his search engine rankings? Should a rankings and/or traffic drop be predicting when completing this? Thank you all in advance. Any other tidbits anyone has to offer would be great. Looking forward to your replies.

Sudden drop and Rise in SERPs
Our site was affected by panda but now we have recovered almost. But some strange things are going with our site for example Traffic for some pages has been dropped(over 100 position) overnight and recover. (graph is attached for a page). We have dropped(over 100 position) on all keywords for a page except a single keyword (staying on first or 2n position). Our home page is not ranking in top 100 position for title keywords. Is our website under any type of filter or penalized by Google?. What is your opinion about our internal link structure and content? URL http://bit.ly/rvxzDm and graph for this page is attached for sample data. looking for your opinion and suggestions. Thanks IXT0m.png
