Fetch and Render misses middle chunk of page
-
Hey folks,
I was checking out a site with the Search Console's "Fetch and Render" function and found something potentially worrisome. A big chunk of the middle of the page (the homepage) shows up as empty space in the preview render window. The site isn't doing so hot in terms of rankings, and I'm wondering if this issue is causing it (since it could indicate that 80% of the copy on the homepage is invisible to Google)
A few other details:
- The specific content isn't showing in either view. Both the "What Google sees" and "What the visitor sees" are missing this chunk of the page
- The content IS visible in cached versions of the page
- The html for the content seems to be in the
- The "Fetch" part returns "Complete" as opposed to "Partial" so I don't THINK it's a matter of javascript stuff getting blocked by robots.txt
- This website was built using the Wordpress theme "Suco" and the parts of the page that aren't rendering are all built with the Themify Builder tool
- Not ALL of the Themify Builder elements are showing up as blank. There's a slider element that's rendering just fine
Any ideas on what could cause whole portions of a page not to show up in Fetch and Render?
Thanks!

From my experience, several different Javascript and Ajax elements can confuse Google. While you obviously don't want to outright avoid their use, it's always good to have someone knowledgeable sift though any code written externally (like a WP theme or plugin, in your case) to ensure that content is always present, even when it isn't necessarily "called" yet.

Interesting - thanks for coming back to update.

I figured out what it was, and it could have implications for anyone else using a theme with the Themify Builder (assuming the issue was causing a problem). The Themify Builder elements can "animate" onto the page as you scroll down (and I believe they are set to do that by default). This means that up until somebody scrolls down to that part of the page, those elements are hidden. The Fetch and Render process wasn't triggering the reveals, so almost everything below the fold (but above the footer) had ' style="visibility:hidden" '
Disabling animations in the theme settings and clearing the cache fixed the problem.

You would need to provide a link to the site for we Mozzers to look into this for you.

Old pages not mobile friendly - new pages in process but don't want to upset current traffic.
Working with a new client. They have what I would describe as two virtual websites. Same domain but different coding, navigation and structure. Old virtual website pages fail mobile friendly, they were not designed to be responsive ( there really is no way to fix them) but they are ranking and getting traffic. New virtual website pages pass mobile friendly but are not SEO optimized yet and are not ranking and not getting organic traffic. My understanding is NOT mobile friendly is a "site" designation and although the offending pages are listed it is not a "page" designation. Is this correct? If my understanding is true what would be the best way to hold onto the rankings and traffic generated by old virtual website pages and resolve the "NOT mobile friendly" problem until the new virtual website pages have surpassed the old pages in ranking and traffic? A proposal was made to redirect any mobile traffic on the old virtual website pages to mobile friendly pages. What will happen to SEO if this is done? The pages would pass mobile friendly because they would go to mobile friendly pages, I assume, but what about link equity? Would they see a drop in traffic ? Any thoughts? Thanks, Toni

Missing 301 redirects
I just had a developer friend call me in a panic, because they had gone live with a new site and found out (the hard way) that they had missed some pages on their 301 redirects. So the pages are appearing in Google but serving 404s. Ouch! So their question was: other than running a report for 404 errors in something like Screaming Frog, is there a way to hunt down ONLY pages serving 404s, then export to CSV so they can be redirected? Anyone got any tricks up their sleeve?

Page titles in browser not matching WP page title
I have an issue with a few page titles not matching the title I have In WordPress. I have 2 pages, blog & creative gallery, that show the homepage title, which is causing duplicate title errors. This has been going on for 5 weeks, so its not an a crawl issue. Any ideas what could cause this? To clarify, I have the page title set in WP, and I checked "Disable PSP title format on this page/post:"...but this page is still showing the homepage title. Is there an additional title setting for a page in WP?

Dealing with 404 pages
I built a blog on my root domain while I worked on another part of the site at .....co.uk/alpha I was really careful not to have any links go to alpha - but it seems google found and indexed it. The problem is that part of alpha was a copy of the blog - so now soon we have a lot of duplicate content. The /alpha part is now ready to be taken over to the root domain, the initial plan was to then delete /alpha. But now that its indexed I'm worried that Ill have all these 404 pages. I'm not sure what to do.. I know I can just do a 301 redirect for all those pages to go to the other ones in case a link comes on but I need to delete those pages as the server is already very slow. Or does a 301 redirect mean that I don't need those pages anymore? Will those pages still get indexed by google as separate pages? Please assist.

Missing Cache - very strange
Anyone have experience with a cache going missing from a page that had a cache in the past? We’re overhauling a page and noticed the cache was gone from Google results. We don’t know if this event is good/bad/doesn’t matter but I am curious why this happens. I am positive the cache was missing before we updated the page today because a programmer mentioned they did try checking for a cache for a historical load time prior to today for a different project. I have attached two screenshots to illustrate two things: 1) What google delivers for a cache: of the page instead of the normal cache page 2) Even though you can see a cache of any of the indexed pages we have from a serp, the cached link is missing in serps for the mentioned page Has anyone seen this before? thanks! Can I use canonical tags to merge property map pages and availability pages to their counterpart overview pages?
I have a property website, for each property are 4-5 tabs each with their own URL, these pages include the overview page which is content rich, and auxilliary pages such as maps, availability, can I use a canonical tag to merge the tabs with very little content to their corresponding overview page which is content rich? I.e. www.mywebsite.co.uk/property-1/overview This page has tabs for map, town info, availability which all have their own url i.e. www.mywebsite.co.uk/property-1/map
