Best Practices for Leveraging Long Tail Content & Gated Content
-
Our B2B site has a lot of of long form content (e.g., transcriptions from presentations and webinars). We'd like to leverage the long tail SEO traffic driven to these pages and convert those visitors to leads.
Essentially, we'd like Google to index all this lengthy, keyword-rich content AND we'd like to put up a read gate that requires users to register before viewing the full article. This is a B2B site, and the goal is to generate leads.
Some considerations and questions:
- How much of the content to share before requiring registration? Ask too soon and it's a terrible user experience, give too much away and our business objectives are not met.
- Design-wise, what are good ways to do this? I notice Moz uses a "teaser" to block Mozinar content, and I've seen modals and blur bars on other sites. Any gotchas that Google doesn't like that we should be aware of? Trying to avoid anything that might seem like cloaking.
- Is it better to split the content across several pages (split a 10K word doc across 10 URLs and include a read gate on each) or keep to one page?
Thank you!

Hi Ronnell,
Thanks for your considered response, I appreciate it!
Re: #3, I was thinking an advantage to splitting the content amongst multiple pages could be that it gives the search engines more URLs to index, and thus gives more opportunity for users to find it via long-tail keywords.
For example, if we split a webinar transcript across five pages, and optimize the title tags, header tags, other on-page elements, etc. uniquely for each page, then it increases the chances a user will find one of those pages (via long tail searches) vs. loading all the content on the first page.
We could add a sidebar paragraph that gives an overview of the webinar content, and users would see that when they land on the page (or perhaps a modal would be more effective?). Once a user signs up to view the entire transcript, we redirect them to an unlocked experience of the first page of the webinar.
I'm not sure if the effort to separate the content and optimize all the unique pages is worthwhile, and I do think the user experience will have more friction if we go this route. We plan to experiment and see how it goes!
Thanks again -

Hi Allie,
Great to see that you're proactively working to use this content in a way that best benefits the brand while reaping the rewards of organic search. One thing I'd add, however, is it's more important that you create as positive a user experience as possible as well, and that means ensuring that the benefits of the information are commensurate with the effort prospects will go through to access it.
To answer your questions...
- You'll have to do some experimenting here, but you want them to invest enough time that they feel compelled to keep going. You also need to make the case that what they've read only scratches the surface of what they'll learn. To that end, I'd say one or two paragraphs should suffice. However, that means (a) that the headlines are catchy and descriptive and (b) the graphs of text pique their interest to a significant degree.
- From experiments I've done with gated content, headlines/titles and compelling nuggets of text work exceedingly well. Also, use A/B testing on the CTA.
- From a user experience perspective, I'd keep it to a single page. No practical advantage to splitting the content.
Be sure to let us know what you decide. We'd very much enjoy hearing the results of the effort.

Problems preventing Wordpress attachment pages from being indexed and from being seen as duplicate content.
Hi According to a Moz Crawl, it looks like the Wordpress attachment pages from all image uploads are being indexed and seen as duplicate content..or..is it the Yoast sitemap causing it? I see 2 options in SEO Yoast: Redirect attachment URLs to parent post URL. Media...Meta Robots: noindex, follow I set it to (1) initially which didn't resolve the problem. Then I set it to option (2) so that all images won't be indexed but search engines would still associate those images with their relevant posts and pages. However, I understand what both of these options (1) and (2) mean, but because I chose option 2, will that mean all of the images on the website won't stand a chance of being indexed in search engines and Google Images etc? As far as duplicate content goes, search engines can get confused and there are 2 ways for search engines

to reach the correct page content destination. But when eg Google makes the wrong choice a portion of traffic drops off (is lost hence errors) which then leaves the searcher frustrated, and this affects the seo and ranking of the site which worsens with time. My goal here is - I would like all of the web images to be indexed by Google, and for all of the image attachment pages to not be indexed at all (Moz shows the image attachment pages as duplicates and the referring site causing this is the sitemap url which Yoast creates) ; that sitemap url has been submitted to the search engines already and I will resubmit once I can resolve the attachment pages issues.. Please can you advise. Thanks.0 -
What's the best way to sculpt links on a page?
I know PR isn't a top ranking factor anymore, so "PR sculpting" isn't something to focus on. But isn't it still true that having more links that you need on any given page is worse than having fewer, in terms of that page's authority? I'm managing a site that has a lot of navigational links in the footer, which are duplicative because they're almost all included in the top nav bar, and several are triplicated in the sidebar as well. I wanted to remove 85% of these duplicative links from the footer, thinking they diluted the page authority and that most users probably won't scroll there anyway when we launch the site. The site owner is pushing back, though, not wanting to remove so many links because he believes they might be useful to some users. We can test our respective user-behavior theories after launching, but right now I have two questions: Will having a sizable number of duplicative links in the footer dilute the page's authority? and 2) Are there any other ways to reduce this dilution, aside from simply removing the links? (I know nofollow is not the answer, but possibly using iframes or Java or something like that?)

What reason would scrapers, and syndication sites outrank all of our content?
Typing in any of our titles for content, scrapers and content syndication sites all outrank us by quite a bit. What is the main reason for this usually? I started noticing this happening quite a bit this year, and think maybe it has to do with panda. Has anyone figured out the reasoning?

Duplicate Content Problem on Our Site?
Hi, Having read the SEOMOZ guide and already worried about this previously, I have decided to look further into this. Our site is 4-5 years old, poorly built by a rouge firm so we have to stick with what we have for now. Were I think we might be getting punished is duplicate content across various pages. We have a Brands page, link at top of page. Here we are meant to enter each brand we stock and a little write up on that brands. What we then put in these write ups is used on each brands item page when we click a brand name on the left nav bar. Or when we click a Product Type (eg. Footwear) then click on a brand filter on the left. So this in theory is duplicate content. The SEO title and Meta Description for each brand is then used on the Brands Page and also on each page with the Brands Product on. As we have entered this brand info, you will notice that the page www.designerboutique-online.com/all-clothing/armani-jeans/ has the same brand description in the scroll box at the top as the page www.designerboutique-online.com/shirts/armani-jeans/ and all the other product type pages. The same SEO title and same Meta descriptions. Only the products change from each one. This then applies to each brand we have (at least 15) across about 8 pages. All with different URLs but the same text. Not sure how a 301 or rel: canonical would work for this, as each URL needs to point at specific pages (eg. shirts, shorts etc...). Some brands such as Creative Recreation and Cruyff only sell footwear, so technically I think??? We could 301 to the Footwear/ URL rather than having both all-clothing and footwear file paths? This surely must be down to the bad design? Could we be losing valulable rank and juice because of this issue? And how would I go about fixing it? I want a new site, but funds are tight. But if this issue is so big that only a new site would fix it, then maybe the money would need to come forward. What do people make of this? Cheers Will
