Is there a way to tell which redirect - from another domain - is driving traffic to your website?
-
My company acquired another domain/website several year's ago. We want to see - for accounting purposes, how much traffic/revenue that site's REDIRECTS are driving to our website now. Is there any way to pull this information?
I thought of comparing when the site was originally redirected to our traffic/revenue changes - but so much has changed from the acquisition that I wouldn't have faith in this value. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
-
Doubtful - since you've had redirects in place for so long, Google most likely dropped the old domain(s) from the index long ago.
-
Nice. My last question, if you don't mind is - do you feel there would be an impact to rankings/traffic if we went back - a year and a half later - to edit the redirect file?
-
That's correct. I started doing this as a way to determine which 301s can be removed over time, but I come across new uses for it all the time!

Thanks Logan -
Just to be clear - in the redirect file then, we'd have a setup which is basically (old domain url) directed to (new domain url+utm parameters?).
That's interesting. I'd never heard of using the UTM codes in a redirect file.

Hi,
You're probably seeing this as direct traffic in Google Analytics - which is totally useless. The only way around this is to append UTMs with source/medium information to the end of the resolving URL. For example:
theDomainYouBought.com >>> yourCurrentDomain.com/?utm_source=theDomainYouBought.com&utm_medium=301
You can replace '301' and the source info with whatever you want, but the more specific you are, the easier it will be to go back and look at the data months/years from now.

Thanks Peter.
The source does not show up in our analytics. To be clear, the site is no longer active, we just redirected its major URL's to appropriate locations of our website.
We can definitely try to take a look at the server logs though, - thanks!

You can see this from Google Analytics. Should be in referral traffic as traffic source.
Another way to check this is from web server logs. You should see all referral traffic from specific URL/pattern.

Redirecting a single page to another website
We're moving one of our services from the current website to a different domain. That domain will be dedicated just to that service. Currently, we have one page for that service on our current website. It already has been crawled and ranks well for certain keywords. But, we would want to eventually delete that page. Can I set 301 redirection for that page to another domain? At what point should I remove the page from the existing website's back-end?

How to move many domains form an address to another?
We need to move a site from a domain to another one, and there are also hundreds or even thousands of subdomains to move. What would be the best practise to do it in order to save at least some of the visibility in search results?

301 redirect domain to page on another domain
Hi, If I wanted to do a 301 permanent redirect on a domain to a page on another domain will this cause any problems? Lets say I have 4 domains (all indexed with content), I decide to create a new domain with 4 pages, one for each domain. I copy the content from the old domains to the relevant page on the new domain and set it live. At the same time as setting the new site live I do a 301 permanent redirect on the 4 domains to the relevant pages on the new domain. What happens if Google indexes the new site before visiting the redirected domains, could this cause a duplicate content penalty? Cheers

301 Redirect with an Exact Domain name Match
My Client had a site that ranked for a pretty competitive two word phrase, but for a variety of reasons had to transfer the site to a different domain name (with none of the previous keywords). We've 301'd everything just fine to the new site, but our traffic for that two word phrase, as well as related long tail traffic, is beginning to drop. Could the drop be related to something that we didn't do well in the transfer? Or is it due to the new domain name now not being an exact match? Sitenote question: Our Google Analytics is still set up for the former domain name and shows data just fine. Is there any reason to switch GA to the new domain? What are the pros/cons? Much thanks in advance!

Question about domain redirects
One of my clients has an odd domain redirect situation. See if you can get your head round this: Domain A is set-up as a domain alias of Domain B Entering domain A or domain B takes you to default.asp on domain B. The default.asp includes VB script to check the HTTP_HOST variable. It checks whether the main doman name for domain A is present in the HTTP_HOST and if so redirects it to domain A/sub-folder/index.htm. If not present it redirects to domain B/index.htm. In both cases the redirect uses a response.Redirect clause. I think what is trying to be achieved is to redirect requests to Domain A to a sub-folder of Domain B. It works but seems extremely convoluted. Can anyone see problems with this set-up? Will link juice be lost along the redirect paths?
