Yoast SEO. After set up 404 error pages
-
Hello all,
Something strange happened with my blog site.
I recently signed to MOZ tools.
Initially everything was fine, but during my last crawl I got loads of 404
pages.Few days ago I was tweaking some settings in SEO plugin according to this post https://moz.com/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success
What I noticed was that 404 pages were coming from my blog posts, but for
some reason category was missing in those posts. For example this link is 404
https://a-fotografy.co.uk/inchcolm-island-wedding-photography-bailieThe one with category is
https://a-fotografy.co.uk/wedding-pictures/inchcolm-island-wedding-photography-bailie/
So basically for some reason category was missing.
Please let me know how can I fix this instead of doing hundreds of
redirects now.Thank you,
Regards,
Armands -
Hi,
Thanks for response. So I went back and unchecked Strip the category base (usually
/category/) from the category URL option and alsoRedirect attachment URLs to parent post URL. option.
Hope this will solve the problem.
Thanks,
Regards,
Armands

From your description, it appears that when you were tweaking your Yoast SEO settings, you changed the permalink structure in the WP Dashboard's Settings > Permalinks section from www.domain.com/tegory%/%postname%/ to just www.domain.com/%postname%/
Doing this causes all the URLS for all posts on your site to change, which means all the original URLs are no longer correct and result in 404s.
Your two options are:
- reset your permalinks back to their original structure, and redirect whatever new posts were created since the initial change back to the /category/postname URLs
- leave the new permalink structure in place and add a blanket rewrite rule in the htaccess file to redirect all the old post URLs to the new structure without the category. (Done properly, only one redirect is needed to handle all the post URLs.)
Personally, for improved site architecture and to keep from having all your existing posts run through redirects, I'd opt for the first option above.
Hope that all makes sense?
Paul
P.S. Make certain you have a current backup of the site before making any further changes, just in case.

Does the use of a unicode character high up on page adversely affect SEO?
I work for a company in the travel industry and we are currently in the process of building out a 360-degree video landing page to inspire travel to our destination. There is some desire from individuals on my team to use the unicode degree symbol ( ° ) after 360 to ensure clarity. We currently have the ° symbol in the Page Title and H1 tag. Does the use of a unicode character adversely affect SEO? Our concern is that it is very unlikely that people are searching for 360-degree videos using the unicode symbol. We also have it fully written out as well. Just want to make sure we won't get dinged for this. Thanks!

Create Page Titles from H1 using Yoast?
I'm working on a site that has 280 blog posts that have either been migrated from an old CMS site or created on the Dev version of the new WordPress site. We've written 280 unique meta descriptions so they don't truncate but it there a quick way I can export the current H1s and then import them into Yoast so they are set as the Page Titles? I've written unique Page Titles and meta descriptions for all the Service and Products page and just want a way to speed up the blog posts as their H1s are really good and what I would use as Page Titles anyway. Any help, greatly appreciated!

Best strategy to handle over 100,000 404 errors.
I recently been given a site that has over one-hundred thousand 404 error codes listed in Google Webmasters. It is really odd because according to Google Webmasters, the pages that are linking to these 404 pages are also pages that no longer exist (they are 404 pages themselves). These errors were a result of site migration that had occurred. Appreciate any input on how one might go about auditing and repairing large amounts of 404 errors. Thank you.

Is the Authority of Individual Pages Diluted When You Add New Pages?
I was wondering if the authority of individual pages is diluted when you add new pages (in Google's view). Suppose your site had 100 pages and you added 100 new pages (without getting any new links). Would the average authority of the original pages significantly decrease and result in a drop in search traffic to the original pages? Do you worry that adding more pages will hurt pages that were previously published?

Can you 301 redirect a page to an already existing/old page ?
If you delete a page (say a sub department/category page on an ecommerce store) should you 301 redirect its url to the nearest equivalent page still on the site or just delete and forget about it ? Generally should you try and 301 redirect any old pages your deleting if you can find suitable page with similar content to redirect to. Wont G consider it weird if you say a page has moved permenantly to such and such an address if that page/address existed before ? I presume its fine since say in the scenario of consolidating departments on your store you want to redirect the department page your going to delete to the existing pages/department you are consolidating old departments products into ?
