Site Audit: Indexed Pages Issue
-
Over the last couple of months I've been working through some issues with a client. One of my starting points was doing a site Audit. I'm following a post written by Geoff Kenyon https://moz.com/blog/technical-site-audit-for-2015 .
One of the main issues of the site audit seems to be that when I run a "site:domain.com" query in Google my homepage isn't the first page listed in fact it isn't listed in this search when I go through all of the listings. I understand that it isn't required to have your homepage listed first when running this type of query, but I would prefer it.
Here are some things I've done
- I ran another query "info:homepage.com" and the home page is indexed by Google.
- When I run a branded search for the company name the home page does come up first.
- The current page that is showing up first in the "site:domain.com" listing is my blog index page.
- Several months back I redirected the index.php page to the root of the domain. Not sure if this is helping or hurting.
- In the sitemap I removed the index.php and left only the root domain as the page to index.
- Also all interior links are sent to the root, index.php has been eliminated from all internal links everything links to root
- The main site navigation does not refer to the "Home" page, but instead my logo is the link to the Home page.
- Should I noindex my blog/index.php page? This page is only a compilation of posts and does not have any original content instead it actually throws up duplicate content warnings.
Any help would be much appreciated. I apologize if this is a silly question, but I'm getting frustrated/ annoyed at the whole situation.
-
Thanks Seoman,
That was why I was wondering if I should noindex the blog index page. It is purely a listing of blog entries and not original content. It seems to throw up duplicate content issues and Google seems to give it the most page power on the site even though it is not my most important page.
I would want Google to still follow all of the links because those are the blog posts and the original content. I don't know if the noindex is the best choice but I think it at least it would tell Google "Hey guys the blog page is not my most important page. In fact it is just a compilation of posts"
I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet, because I don't know if it will hurt me more than it is helping. I just don't know. If anyone has any other thoughts on the noindex of the blog index page which is not my home page feel free to drop me a line.
-
Apologies I'd slightly misunderstood your question, I see exactly what you mean now. I think this is purely down to the way Google associates the search intent and tries to deliver the most appropriate result.
The site parameter is obviously intended to help users find a specific item on the specified site, therefore if the blog has more content than the other pages there is more chance that it will have what the user is looking for hence Google will deliver that page out of preference.
Don't know for sure but just an assumption. As you said branded searches are fine, there certainly doesn't look to be any issues as far as I can see although I haven't done a full audit.
Would be interested to see what anyone else says but my gut feeling is there is nothing to be worried about, the main thing is you come up for your company name and search terms that you want.
Sorry hope that helps somewhat.
All the best

Feel free to take a look www.denverilluminations.com & www.denverilluminations.com/_blog/ .
Also the domain authority is 19 for the site I was looking at the individual page authorities. Thanks again Seoman.
-
Anyway you could let me have the two links and I can give them a quick look over?
Also bear in mind that DA isn't everything.
-
Seoman,
Thanks for the response. I appreciate any and all suggestions
- Blog page has a page authority of 1 out of 100 the home page has a page authority of 33 out of 100
- I looked at google's cache for pages and reviewed the text only version and everything is showing.
- Checked robots and I'm disallowing certain directories that I don't want indexed or crawled but those are all in order and I tested the robots.txt just to make sure it was written properly and it came back clean.
I don't believe noindexing my blog page is absolutely necessary, but I'm kind of wondering if Google thinks that it is my home page instead of my regular root directory? I know it sounds a little weird but I'm wondering if something is confusing the spiders. Thanks again for your time and thoughts.
-
Few quick thoughts come to mind (in order of priority)
- Blog page may have more authority than the homepage
- Could be a technical issue with the homepage (Maybe Google can't see anything there)
- Check your robots.txt to make sure it's not blocked (Sounds crazy but can happen)
I would strongly advise against noindexing unless it is absolutely necessary.
Personally I wouldn't be too worried about the homepage not showing although, I agree it's a good idea to know why. After all no customers are going to be using Google search parameters like site or info. They are going to be searching for what they want and expecting an answer on the page that Google provides them with.
Not sure if that helps or not but just a few thoughts.

How about a No-index backlink in the eye of Google
I have a doubt - when I create a backlink as a part of SEO in some website when I rechecked the same couple of days after. It hasn't indexed and I checked its robots file. It showing **User-agent: ****Mediapartners-Google ****Disallow: ****User-Agent: * ****Disallow:**However, is this create any backlink support or just this for the purpose of not indexing in google.I make it simple -"Is this kind of backlink creation support my SEO activity or Not?" In this No-index website.

Do you use HREF lang tags when each page that is localised only exists in that language?
Hi, I have 2 questions I am seeking an answer for. We have a home page in english GB, we then also have products which are specifically served in US. For these pages where the phone number is american, the spelling is american, the address is american, do we need to implement href lang tags? The page isn't a version of another page in english, the page is only in the native language.Secondly, is it recommended to create a second home page and then localise that page for US users?I'd be really greatful if anyone has any pointers as googles forum doesn't explain best practice for this case (as far as I can tell). Many thanks

Company sells home appliances and commercial appliances. What is the best way to differentiate the two on our site for the best user experience/SEO?
Should we structure it starting at the homepage with the user selecting for home or for business, that way they have to make a selection before moving further OR should we somehow differentiate in the navigation using the top menu tabs, dropdowns, etc?

On what pages of my site should I put schema.org structured markup for an Aggregate Review of a Concrete Construction Contractors work?
I have a concrete contractor that I do a site for. He has many reviews from Home Advisor. So I created a Structured Data Markup using HTML5\. I put the the AggregateReview near the bottom of the About Us page at [http://www.skv-construction.com/about-us.html](http://www.skv-construction.com/about-us.html). Question 1: Should I also put the AggregateReview on the home page, or on specific project pages. Question 2: How will Google use the data now if the About page is NOT searched or displayed in SERPs. Does Google display this markup when and where they want to? Question 3: Siince this is a Local Business, should I embed the AggregateReview within the LocalSearch tag. I passed the Google test as it is for the Aggregate Review! But I have the review wrapped in the HomeAndConstructionBusiness tag. Here is the code: "http://schema.org/HomeAndConstructionBusiness"> # Quality Workmanship w 50 Yrs Experience "http://schema.org/AggregateRating"> 4.37 stars-based on 54 reviews at ["http://www.homeadvisor.com/rated.SKVConstruction.18028291.html"](<a) target="_blank">Home Advisor "http://schema.org/PostalAddress"> 10005 Fair Lane <spam itemprop="addresslocality" union=""></spam> IL 60180 (847) 364 0161 ["http://www.skv-construction.com/contact-us.html"](<a)>Contact Us Price Range: All Jobs Custom; Call for Quote or Visit Web Site Would appreciate any help. This markup is so vague, I can see why few people are using it. Maybe you should do a Video training or extended training on how to's. Vernon Wanner 815-332-8062

How can my categories rank for my different branches? Tidied site up but now local rankings are worse
Dear Mozzers , I am wondering if someone could please help with some advice and assistance on the following for our Tool hire site: Basically I like to know how we can rank for our categories for our different branch locations ?. We have a branch finder page and separate branch pages but I do not know if I should have an internal link from all our branch pages to all my different categories or not or is google clever enough to know that I have x locations and x categories and I should rank all the categories in all the locations. I think my site structure is fairly straightforward and on the face of it similar to what others do who have multiple branches . For example I enclose a link to 2 of our categories - carpet cleaner hire category and a floor sander hire category carpet cleaner category - http://goo.gl/cMyS4i floor sander category - http://goo.gl/4ipUyA Heres a link to our Branch Finder - http://goo.gl/UyTQdK Heres a link to one of our Branches for example - Bristol Branch - http://goo.gl/9TXHTK And heres our link to our google plus Bristol page - google plus bristol branch page - https://goo.gl/h0IwAK . We have link from our bristol page going to the bristol google plus page and visa versa. Currently within our internal linking structure there is No direct link on the branch pages to the categories ?. Is this something we need to do or not necessary ?. - If we do it , then it may mess up or confuse the page as I someone need to get all the category links on the branch pages ? We have lots of good unique content , lots of citations for our branches and categories etc but we just don't seem to rank at all well for any of our categories in local search. For example if somene was to search for - Carpet cleaner hire "City Name " or Floor sander hire "City Name" (City name being where our branches are). We dont rank very well for most of our cities. Even without putting the city name in we dont rank to well in local search. We used to have individual pages for our categories in each of the cities we have branches with unique content on all and these did rank quite well in a few cities but never top 3 in most and we got rid of these last month (start of Oct) as I was told that google may see this as quite spammy or doorway pages if I have a carpet cleaner hire Bristol page or a floor sander hire Bristol page etc ?.. All my location landing pages now just 301 back to the appropriate category. I am wondering if getting rid of these landing pages was a good idea as by tidying things up , I've seemed to have lost my local rankings for my cities. Can someone please advise if what I did was right and what else I should look at doing ?> Could it be an internal linking issue I need to sort ? Any assistance much appreciated.

Multilocation business, how can you rank for different categories in different locations with only branch pages?
Hello Mozzers, I am wondering how do you rank for categories locally where when you operate from multiple branches. Currently our eCommerce website has location pages for every category but I know that this is now classed as doorway pages and spammy so I am in the process of sorting out our site structure. I understand that the general format for having sites with multiple branches is to have a branch page per physical location and that's about it. Is there any more to this ? However, What confuses me though, is that if you offer all these services in all these branches, how are you going to rank for them locally if you don't have a specific page for each of them in that location? So for example - We rent Carpet cleaners , floor sanders, generators in each of our different branches. My site currently has a carpet cleaner hire <location>url , floor sander hire <location>url and a generator hire <location>url. Every branch has a url for each of my categories.</location></location></location> So if I was to get rid of all of my location category pages. How am I going to rank for these renting these products in different cities where our branches does without having specific location pages for them ? Is it just a case that google knows that because I have branch pages at locations x, y, x , then my carpet cleaner , floor sander and generator category pages will rank locally in those locations providing I have decent citations etc etc etc thanks

2 Relevant local websites but closing one and redirecting it to an older site
We have 2 websites, 1 domain is about 10 years old and another is about 4 years old, the 4 yr old domain we are thinking of shutting down since its the same type of service we run but it was a 'keyword domain' that used to rank on 1st page but now its 4th page back. If we put the blog posts and other content + setup re-directs from the 4yr old domain to the 10 yr old domain, would this help the 10 yr old domain with more link juice that it might need for the extra boost? There isnt really any point having both websites up since both are about the same content and targeting the same local market.
