Why is the Dev site indexing and not my actual Domain
-
hi guys I had 2 word press sites built but since they went live a couple of things aren't working.
1.when I do a keyword search one of the sites comes back with the actual URL and when I do another keyword search for the same site the DEV site comes back indexed and not the actual URL.
2. The other site originally started indexing with the DEV site and not the URL and the developer tried to fix it and now it doesn't index at all. Its been long enough time for it to index.
Both URL's are live when put into a browser.
Any advice would be great
Thanks
Jamie

Looks like your dev didn't block the dev site while it was being created. That sucks.
This is easy to fix. Make sure you have an updated sitemap file with recent change dates, and all the final URLs added. Also, go through Google's webmaster tools and fetch each new URL that has been added. If you still have a dev directory or folder on the server, block this with robots.txt.
Sitemap example:
<url><loc>https://DOMAIN.com/subpage/</loc>
<lastmod>2016-09-26T04:14:14Z</lastmod></url>
<priority>1.0</priority> (or whatever priority you want to set for the URLs)
<changefreq>Daily</changefreq>

Hi Jamie,
It sounds like the dev site has been removed from index, which is good, but I would check two things straight away on the proper site:
- Make sure your site doesn't have a meta robots "noindex" tags on each page
- Make sure your site isn't blocking crawlers (including search engines) in robots.txt
If this is a WordPress site, check Settings > Reading and make sure that the box that says 'Discourage search engines from indexing this site' is unchecked.
If you aren't sure how to do any of this, send me a PM with the domain names and I'd be happy to take a quick look.
Cheers,
David

Linking Root Domains after Site-Wide Redirect
(Edited for simplicity) Page #1 on site A has links from 5 different root domains. If I 301 that page to a page on site B that has zero links, will site B gain 5 linking root domains, per the Moz tool? Thanks.

Redirecting old domain to new domain with wordpress
Hi all, I need to change domain name to a website published on wordpress. I'd think to make these steps: trasferring the website (files+db) to a new hosting space to redirect old site (www.oldsite.com) to the new one (www.newsite.com) using rewrite rules. With these steps I'd need to transfer and reinstall files and wordpress so I would like to discover if there's some less time expending procedure to consider. Thanks and ciao Bob

Is 301 redirecting all old URLS after a new site redesign to the root domain bad for SEO?
After a new site redesign ...would it hinder our rankings if we 301 redirected all old URLS that are returning 404 error codes to the root domain (home page) ? Would this be a good temporary solution until we are able to redirect the pages to the appropriate corresponding page? Thanks so much!

Mobile Site Domain/URL Structure
We are currently building a mobile optimised version of our main website and I had some questions with regard to SEO. 1. Is it best to structure the domain as: m.yourdomain.com yourdomain/m 2. It is correct to place rel="cannonical" on the mobile pages and to have only the main site indexed? Thanks in advance and links or books on mobile seo you can direct me to that would be greatly appreciated. Phil

Lots of Domains Going Nowhere - Point to a Real Domain?
I have hundreds of domains that I have purchased over the years that arent going anywhere except GoDaddy's Cash Parking system, which returns very little revenue, if at all. I wonder if it would make more sense to just point these domains to actually e-commerce sites that I own. If so, how best to take these domains and point them so that SEO credit is given properly. Most of these available domains dont have anything to do with the e-commerce stores. So not sure it would help. Furthermore, if I were to purchase new domains that were more relevant to the keywords to our e-commerce sites, how best to set them up so we can generate traffic on them and point them over to the actual domains? Many thanks.
