Hi,
I have generated a dynamic sitemap and submit it in search console, but there is a huge gap between the number of submitted pages and the number of indexed pages.
143,206 URLs submitted 2,151 URLs indexedwhy we have this gap and what should I do to reduce it?

If your site is relatively new or you've only just added your sitemap to Google Search Console then it will take a while for you'll see this number go up. What you can do though is check our your Crawl Stats in Google Search Console. There you can find out how many pages Google is currently crawling daily on your site. If this number is very low, then you need to find ways to get more authority to your pages so Google will find it worthwhile to index these pages as well. You have a limited crawl budget and if that's relatively low then it could take a while before Google will index all these pages as they just haven't found them before you submitted the sitemap.

Submitted pages are those pages we've submitted to Google from the Sitemap on your website. Indexed pages are those pages Google finds by spidering or crawling your website naturally. It is not uncommon for your Indexed pages to be lower than your Submitted pages. Yes, ideally want your Indexed pages to be just as much as the Submittedpages. The tricky part is knowing which pages are not indexed!
However, there are things you can do to improve these Indexed pages, namely:
- Getting more websites to link to the pages in your website.
- Adding unique content to all the pages in your site and modifying the all important SEO tags.

Sitemap.gz is being indexed and is showing up in SERP instead of actual pages. I recently uploaded my sitemap file - https://psglearning.com/sitemapcustom/sitemap-index.xml - via Search Console. The only record within the XML file is sitemaps.gz. When I searched for some content on my site - here is the search https://goo.gl/mqxBeq - I was shown the following search result, indicating that our GZ file is getting indexed instead of our pages. http://www.psglearning.com/catalog 1 http://www.psglearning.com ...www.psglearning.com/sitemapcustom/sitemap.gz... 1 https://www.psglearning.com/catalog/productdetails/9781284059656/ 1 https://www.psglearning.com/catalog/productdetails/9781284060454/ 1 ... My sitemap is listed at https://psglearning.com/sitemapcustom/sitemap-index.xml inside the sitemap the only reference is to sitemap.gz. Sitemaps, 404s and URL structure
Hi All! I recently acquired a client and noticed in Search Console over 1300 404s, all starting around late October this year. What's strange is that I can access the pages that are 404ing by cutting and pasting the URLs and via inbound links from other sites. I suspect the issue might have something to do with Sitemaps. The site has 5 Sitemaps, generated by the Yoast plugin. 2 Sitemaps seem to be working (pages being indexed), 3 Sitemaps seem to be not working (pages have warnings, errors and nothing shows up as indexed). The pages listed in the 3 broken sitemaps seem to be the same pages giving 404 errors. I'm wondering if auto URL structure might be the culprit here. For example, one sitemap that works is called newsletter-sitemap.xml, all the URLs listed follow the structure: http://example.com/newsletter/post-title Whereas, one sitemap that doesn't work is called culture-event-sitemap.xml. Here the URLs underneath follow the structure http://example.com/post-title. Could it be that these URLs are not being crawled / found because they don't follow the structure http://example.com/culture-event/post-title? If not, any other ideas? I Lost Index Status of My Sitemap
We have a simple WordPress website for our law firm, with an English version and a Spanish version. I have created a sitemap (with appropriate language markup in the XML file) and submitted it to Webmaster Tools. Google crawled the site and accepted the sitemap last week, 24/24 pages indexed, 12 English and 12 Spanish. This week, Google decided to remove one of the pages from the index, showing 23/24 pages indexed. So, my questions are as follows: How can I find out which page was dropped from the index? If the pages are the same content, but different language, why did only one version of the page get dropped, while the other version remains? Why did the Big G drop one of my pages from the index? How can I reindex the dropped page? I know this is a fairly basic issue, and I'm embarrassed for asking, but I sure do appreciate the help.

Sitemap errors have disappeared from my Google Webmaster tools
Hi all, A week ago I had 66 sitemap errors related to href langs in my GWT. Now, all the errors are gone, and it shows no errors. We have not done any work to fix the errors. I wonder if anybody has experienced the same thing, of Google suddenly changing the criteria or the way they report on errors in Google Webmaster Tools. Multiple sitemaps for various media?
Hello, We have always included videos, pages, and images in the same sitemap.xml file, and after reading through the Google sitemap info page, I am wondering if we should break those up into respective types of sitemaps (i.e one for video, one for images, etc)? If this is so, how to name the files and submit them? And then, should I submit a sitemap.xml directory sitemap? Note: we have the normal amount of images, videos, pages..not an ecommerce site. Exclude Child URLs from XML Sitemap Generator (Wordpress)
Hi all, I was recommended the XML Sitemap Generator for Wordpress by the very helpful Keith Bloemendaal and John Pring - however I can't seem to exclude child URLs. There is a section Exclude items and a subsection Exclude posts. I have tried inputting the URLs for the pages I don't want in the sitemap, however that didn't work. So I read that you have to include a list of "IDs" - not sure where on earth to find that info, tried the page name and the post= number from the URL, however neither worked. I hope somebody can point me in the right direction - and apologies, I am a Wordpress novice, and I got no answers from the Wordpress forums so turned right back to SEOmoz! Cheers.

How does a sitemap affect the definition of canonical URLs?
We are having some difficulty generating a sitemap that includes our SEO-friendly URLs (the ones we want to set as canonical), and I was wondering if we might be able to simply use the non-SEO-friendly, non-canonical URLs that the sitemap generator has been producing and then use 301 redirects to send them to the canonical. Is there a reason why we should not be doing this? We don't want search engines to think that the sitemap URLs are more important than the pages to which they redirect. How important is it that the sitemap URLs match the canonical URLs? We would like to find a solution outside of the generation of the sitemap itself as we are locked into using a vendor’s product in order to generate the sitemap. Thanks!
