Why is hosting good for SEO?
-
I've heard a few people mention this now. I have seen hosting packages range from £5 to £1000 per month, and I understand that each comes with their own amounts of storage space, bandwidth and all. Now I understand that page speed is important to SEO and the type of hosting will dictate your page speed, but other than this why is hosting important to SEO?
-
Page speed is the obvious one which can certainly be impacted by poor hosting selection. Specfically server response time when viewing page speed insights within GA are impacted by your hosting setup.
Beyond page speed reliability is a factor as well. You may have great average server response times and page load speeds but if you see frequent outages or slow-down periods it may have an impact on your traffic.
It's also good to understand and choose the right type of hosting. Do you need a DIY hosting package where you are expected to maintain things or are you looking for something managed. Managed hosting can help lessen the stress of hosting depending on your business needs.

£1000 /month for hosting? o.O
I can't say I've ever seen this before! Perhaps that's for massive traffic volumes like you'd expect to see for Reddit.com? It would make sense in the scenario to cope with the sheer volume of simultaneous sessions and interaction as well as risks like DDOS but for the average website I can't imagine there'd be any benefit beyond finding a host with a server that's fast, reliable and preferably in the same region as your target market.
The server location isn't as important as people think but it does have some influence so if you're in the market for a server change you might as well, just don't go changing for this alone.

SEO Experts: Where did you start?
Hi all! I'm beginning to travel down the road of becoming an SEO expert! I've attended the latest few webinars on Moz, and have started watching the White Board Fridays. However I'm wondering, for the current SEO Experts, how did you get to where you are today? I.e. What books did you read? Did you pay for classes or just learn everything from Moz? Where is a good place to get an SEO Expert Certification/Is it necessary? How long did it take you to become an expert? (Stuff like that) I suppose I'm looking to make a list for myself, organizing what I should learn first, and then create a timeline moving forward. Thanks for your help Mozzers! - Briana B.

Could Sub domains damage our SEO?
Hi there, We're currently looking into integrating a new internal search function to our site which will involve housing the search results on a sub domain of our site. We have no intention of these search result pages becoming landing pages for organic traffic but would the inclusion of a sub domain affect the optimization of the main domain? i.e. could it effect our authority? Does capitalization matter for SEO?
Two places capitalization comes into play: (1) on-page use (title, h1, body text, img alt text, etc) (2) external anchor text I didn't think it mattered from Google's point of view for on-page usage (is this correct?) but I notice that OpenSiteExplorer' s 'anchor text distribution' tab shows different counts for the same keyword if it's capitalized in different ways (eg seomoz.org is listed separate from SEOmoz.org). Is that just OSE or does Google treat the keyword/phrase different based on its capitalization, too? And if so, then should I be creating external links to my site with the 'regular' and 'Capitalized' versions of my key phrases?
