Help talking to an aggressive web team (1st time in the forums)
-
Hello All!
I am a long-time Moz user, but not super technical myself. I'm used to asking a web team to fix something, based on the reports, and they do it. I'm trying to communicate with a really aggressive web team about a site that's showing about 16,000 errors every week on my Moz reports. What I'm trying to figure out is if they are right or not, so I can either ignore them or push harder. Can someone help me with how to explain these to them or let me know if they are right? These are the two biggies I'm struggling with:
b. Duplicate page content
Example: https://www.whiteheadindustrial.com/c-104-abrasives.aspx?pagenum=1 and https://www.whiteheadindustrial.com/c-104-abrasives.aspxTheir explanation:
I wonder if MOZ is not reading the infinite scrolling pages the way that Google does. We have followed Google’s directions for how to let Google know that each page is a successor of the previous one, so no duplicate content. But probably MOZ tool does not view the code on the page the same way. So I think this is not relevant for Google indexint.
Second:
Example 2: https://www.whiteheadindustrial.com/p-19708-4-point-mandrel-and-hex-nut-116-hole-18-shank-nocra-13440-m.aspx
https://www.whiteheadindustrial.com/p-30356-working-peanut-knife-no-046-6220-ss.aspx
In Example 2, the only duplicate content I can find is the “Stocking data Current as of… Please note:..” and the Customer Reviews area.c. Duplicate page title
I wonder if MOZ is not reading the infinite scrolling pages the way that Google does; because the duplicate page titles are related to category pageI would be super grateful for any guidance!

Thank you David! This is exactly what I needed!

Hi Renia! I am here just to confirm what David said Good luck!

Hi Renia,
I'm not sure what they mean when they say "I wonder if MOZ is not reading the infinite scrolling pages the way that Google does"...
Pagination (rel="next" and rel="prev") and canonical tags are not in place so each page is being indexed individually, and would be causing some issues, as Moz reports. Without these tags in place, Google will not understand that the pages are a series, as your web team suggests. You can see that they are indexed by doing a Google search for site:https://www.whiteheadindustrial.com/c-104-abrasives.aspx
Or site:whiteheadindustrial.com inurl:pagenum to see that there are over 2,000 in total of these pages indexed.
You could easily overcome this issue by getting the developers to implement pagination and canonical tags on these types of pages.
Your second issue, I think, will always be reported as duplicates in Moz because they use the same overall page template (which is taken into consideration when assessing duplicate content) and there is little unique content on them - this is common on e-commerce sites when there isn't much product information available or products are very similar.
However, I don't think you need to worry about this too much. Google is pretty generous when it comes to product pages like this and you shouldn't be negatively impacted by it.
Your third issue with title tags should be resolved once pagination and canonical tags are implemented correctly throughout the site.
Hope this helps
Cheers,
David

Help with 301 redirects.
Hi, I would like to say thank you in advance to all who help me with my question. MOZ crawl test showed duplicate content for a site that i just finished. I have www.site.com, site.com and site.index.html( all are the home page) So i have decided to 301 redirect all pages to site.com. And I also learned that when you do a 301 redirect all link juice is passed to the page that i redirect to. Here is my question: If someone links to my site using www.site.com instead of site.com in the future, will the 301 redirect still pass the pr to the page?( site.com). Or it only does, at the time of redirect and not in the future. I know this might be a stupid question but i am really new to this and couldn't find an answer for that. Thanks guys

Help - Analyzing Web Traffic Across Multiple Websites
Hi Moz Community, Hope you can help. Is there any way to discover the most visited pages for a particular website, one that I do not administer? I wouldn't need exact numbers, just a relative breakdown of the "Most Visited" pages/sections. For example, if I was reviewing www.jcrew.com, I'd be interested in determining the 10/20/50 most visited pages/products. And just to provide another example, I would be interested in the 10/20/50 most visited pages/stories on www.buzzfeed.com. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

HELP - Configuration Killing Me, Dying on Google, About To Give Up
My organic Google traffic just completely died and it is not Panda related. I really need someone to offer some suggestions because I am about to give up. This is going to be a bit complex .. Here is the skinny: I have several relatively new sites. My main site for the purposes of this discussion is smartwatchnews[dot]org and I host my sites on wpengine.com. My traffic was was slowly building and I was averaging 2000+ unique visitors per day on 8,000 highly ranked Google impressions. In addition, Google was indexing my new posts about an hour after they were made. After reading seoMoz in its entirety and subscribing to Moz PRO, I decided to streamline my site, and focus my content to provide a better user experience. Here are the changes I made: 1. For ease of administration, I converted all of my sites into a single multisite wordpress installation. For some reason, Google now has half of my pages listed on the master site smartwatch.smartfamily.wpengine.com, and not on smartwatchnews.org. I have implemented 301 redirects for the pages at issue hoping to fix this problem. 2. At the same time, I also streamlined my categories and tags and used 301 redirects to route users to the right pages. 3. Finally, I subscribed to Moz Pro, analyzed my sight, and reduced usage of my keywords to around 3%. I had not stuffed, but the focus of my site necessarily resulted in me using certain words frequently. Within one week of implementing the above-listed three tweaks, I went from getting 2,000+ visitors per day to ~200 and my Google impressions went from around 8,000 highly ranked per day to approximately 150 poorly ranked. In addition, Google went from indexing my site hourly to indexing about once per week now. I do absolutely no blackhat, link-building or marketing of any kind. Other interesting things I have noticed: 1. Several SEO companies have linked to my site recently ... for example, all of a sudden, chkme.com just showed up in Webmaser Tools with over 1,000 links to my site. I have no idea who they are. 2. Google Analytics shows that my site has an average page load time of 33 seconds! It has never taken me more than 2 or 3 to load one of my pages and I have Google PageSpeed scores in the 90s. I guess what I really want to know is, can I just create a bunch of quality content over the next few months and the problem will remedy itself, or is there an obvious problem that I need to fix? I am at my wits end ... can anyone offer any suggestions before I simply chuck the whole thing? Thanks in advance for ANY assistance, ideas, or simply "hang in there's" ;-(

Quote "There is no SEO software that can help optimize a site"
Hi all I am a developer for a small agency in the UK. I am using SEOmoz for a couple of our clients and I am also using it to learn from. So far I am finding it a great tool and this forum is also incredibly helpful. Now I also visit another forum called HighRankings.com and this months newsletter is a list of points that are defined as "SEO Mistakes". In it, point number 2 reads: "Repeat after me: There is no specific number of times a keyword phrase should be used in my content. There is no magic number of words that my pages should have written on them. And there is no best number of words or phrases that belong in a Title tag. And most of all: There is no SEO software that can optimize my website (despite the claims of their creators). Use your common sense to optimize your site! Learn how your target audience searches for products, services and information such as yours, and write about it accordingly on your website. Then write to make an emotional connection with your visitors so that they'll convert into happy customers." Now as a user of SEOmoz I wondered what others thought of this comment? Many thanks for reading. Kris
