Query on Sitemap xml Root Path

- Is it compulsory to have sitemap.xml at this path - abcd.com/sitemap.xml?
My sitename is abcd.com. Now is it compulsory to have sitemap.xml at this path - abcd.com/sitemap.xml only?
a) If i take cnd services where path can be like xyz.com/sitemap.xml and then this sitemap i can submit in robot file so it is fine?
b) What will happen here in webmaster tool as in webmaster tool when we submit sitemap by default it gives us domain name like abcd.com and we have to just add /sitemap.xml

Hi Ian,
Thanks for your support!

Hi,
What is the main reason for you to upload the sitemap to a new location?
I also found an article on sitemaps that might help. It says: The XML sitemaps protocol defines that XML sitemap files can not contain URLs from different domains. This includes subdomains and other kinds of variations. You have to keep all URLs to a single domain per XML sitemap.
Taken from this site https://www.microsystools.com/products/sitemap-generator/help/multiple-domains-xml-sitemaps/
This includes tutorials on different types of sitemaps.
Hope this can help further.
Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian,
I have a large ecommerce website whose XML site map is currently located at https://www.abcd.com./sitemap.xml , whereas I want to upload it at new location I.e https://data.abcd.com/sitemap.xml it means on new location which is sudomain, Also if it is OK as per Google guidelines to upload your sitemap in sudomain rather than main domain then please let me know that in webmaster console how can I upload this new sitemap? Because when I try to upload sitemap in console it ask mandatorily to upload sitemap to be available at root of the website so what next I can do ? Thanks!

Hi,
I Believe it's compulsory for a sitemap to be at abcd.com/sitemap.xml.
Here is a guide on sitemaps and their format for future references: https://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html
You tend to only have one sitemap, unless you have a large site then you will need divide the sitemaps across different pages, a general rule of thumb is to keep the sitemap below 50,000 URLs. I'd say one sitemap at abcd.com/sitemap.xml should be enough for a standard website.
I'm unsure of Question a) if you could repeat that in more detail please.
Finally, there are two ways to submit a sitemap,
-
Directly within Google Search Console (previously Webmaster Tools) using the 'Test/Add Sitemap' feature, by adding /sitemap.xml and testing it before submitting it.
-
Insert the your sitemap line anywhere in your
robots.txt
file, specifying the path to your sitemap:
Sitemap: http://example.com/sitemap_location.xml
You can also find more information and guidelines on sitemaps here: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/156184?hl=en&ref_topic=4581190
Hope that helps.

Search Console rejecting XML sitemap files as HTML files, despite them being XML
Hi Moz folks, We have launched an international site that uses subdirectories for regions and have had trouble getting pages outside of USA and Canada indexed. Google Search Console accounts have finally been verified, so we can submit the correct regional sitemap to the relevant search console account. However, when submitting non-USA and CA sitemap files (e.g. AU, NZ, UK), we are receiving a submission error that states, "Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page," despite them being .xml files, e.g. http://www.t2tea.com/en/au/sitemap1_en_AU.xml. Queries on this suggest it's a W3 Cache plugin problem, but we aren't using Wordpress; the site is running on Demandware. Can anyone guide us on why Google Search Console is rejecting these sitemap files? Page indexation is a real issue. Many thanks in advance!

Sitemap indexation
3 days ago I sent in a new sitemap for a new platform. Its 23.412 pages but until now its only 4 pages (!!) that are indexed according to the Webmaster Tools. Why so few? Our stage-enviroment got indexed (more than 50K pages) in a few days by a mistake.

Sitemaps
Hi, I have doubt using sitemaps My web page is a news we page and we have thousands of articles in every section. For example we have an area that is called technology We have articles since 1999!! So the question is how can Make googl robot index them? Months ago when you enter the section technology we used to have a paginator without limits, but we notice that this query consume a lot of CPU per user every time was clicked. So we decide to limit to 10 pages with 1 records. Now it works great BUT I can see in google webmaster tools that our index decreased dramatically The answer is very easy, the bot doesn't have a way to get older technoly news articles because we limit he query to 150 records total Well, the Questin is how can I fix this? Options: 1) leave the query without limits 2) create a new button " all tech news" with a different query without a limit but paginated with (for example) 200 records each page 3) Create a sitemap that contain all the tech articles Any idea? Really thanks.

Same day our sitemap finished processing in G WebTools, our SERP results Tank!
Need a little help troubleshooting an SEO issue. The day our sitemap finished processing in Google Webmaster Tools, almost all of our keyword serp results tanked. Our top 4 keywords routinely were placing from 11 - 33 rank in serp result and now they're not even on in the top 200? Would the sitemap processing have anything do do with this or should I look somewhere else. FYI: Site is build in DNN, sitemap is fine and robot.txt file is good. Open to all suggestions!!

Sitemap coming up in Google's index?
I apologize if this question's answer is glaringly obvious, but I was using Google to view all the pages it has indexed of our site--by searching for our company and then clicking the link that says to display more results for the site. On page three, it has the sitemap indexed as if it wee just another page of our site. <cite>www.stadriemblems.com/sitemap.xml</cite> Is this supposed to happen?
