Duplicate Content in WordPress Taxonomies & Noindex, Follow
-
Hello Moz Community,
We are seeing duplicate content issues in our Moz report for our WordPress site’s Tag pages. After a bit of research, it appears one of the best solutions is to set Tag pages to “no index, follow” within Yoast. That makes sense, but we have a few questions:
In doing this, how are we affecting our opportunity to show up in search results?
Are there any other repercussions to making this change?
What would it take to make the content on these pages be seen as unique?

Hi Corey
Don pretty much nailed this answer. I'll make sure to answer your specific questions:
-
You're not negatively affecting your ability to show in search by noindexing tags. They almost never rank or get traffic since they are just pages of thin content. Noindexing them does not affect your other pages.
-
No other repercussions - unless you have a random tag archive getting traffic. Check your analytics, and if so, you can individually leave specific tags indexed with the Yoast plugin. I wrote a post all about this a while back: http://www.evolvingseo.com/2012/08/10/clean-sweep-yo-tag-archives-now/
-
You would have to figure out how to have unique title tags on each page - which is honestly more effort than is worth it. The Moz tool is showing an 'error' of duplicate content but the issue is just more that tag pages don't have much value and can just be noindexed and then ignored.

Hey there. Have a look at this post please. I believe it has everything you'll need to know. Thanks again for the help, Don!

The problem you are experiencing is due to archives pages that are created every time you create a new tag, category, author, or other types of archive pages. The issue occurs when you tag or categorize the post or page. For instance, "Why Do We Need SEO" is your first ever post on your website and you tag it with SEO Best Practices, and you categorize it has SEO. You will have 3 archive pages with duplicate content. The author page, the SEO Best Practices page and the SEO page. This is because each archive page only consists of the same post "Why Do We Need SEO". So as you write more posts the duplicate pages may disappear depending on how you organize your content. If you create lots of tags and tag everything chances are you will always have duplicate content.
To not get a penalty you should no index these archive pages. But if you are disciplined with your organization of tags and categories. You will not have a problem.
Thanks,
Don

Are AMP pages affecting mobile search visibility?
Hello fellow Mozzers. I've recently seen a fairly hefty drop in search visibility on Google mobile, from 12.8% to 4.1%. Desktop visibility is unaffected. The same search visibility drop is echoed in SEMRush. However, Google Analytics shows that our site traffic from mobile hasn't changed. The only thing I can think of is that we recently launched AMP pages. I know Google sometimes caches AMPs so they’re served off google domains. Could that mean that the cached version of the page is ranking rather than our own? That would explain the drop in visibility but stable traffic I think?! What other explanation could it be? Many thanks in advance, Kit

Duplicate Content/Missing Meta Description | Pages DO NOT EXISIT!
Hello all, For the last few months, Moz has been showing us that our site has roughly 2,000 duplicate content errors. Pages that were actually duplicate content, I took care of accordingly using best practice (301 redirects, canonicalization,etc.). Still remaining after these fixes were errors showing for pages that we have never created. Our homepage is www.primepay.com. An example of pages that are being shown as duplicate content is http://primepay.com/blog/%5BLink%20to%20-%20http:/www.primepay.com/en/payrollservices/payroll/payroll/payroll/online-payroll with a referring page of http://primepay.com/blog/%5BLink%20to%20-%20http:/www.primepay.com/en/payrollservices/payroll/payroll/online-payroll. Some of these are even now showing up as 403 and 404 errors. The only real page on our site within that URL strand is primepay.com/payroll or primepay.com/payroll/online-payroll. Therefore, I am not sure where Moz is getting these pages from. Another issue we are having in relation to duplicate content is that moz is showing old campaign url’s tacked on to our blog page i.e. http://primepay.com/blog?title=&page=2&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=blogCTA&utm_campaign=IRSblogpost&qt-blog_tabs=1. As of this morning, our duplicate content went from 2,000 to 18,000. I exported all of our crawl diagnostics data and looked to see what the referring pages were, and even they are not pages that we have created. When you click on these links, they take you to a random point in time from the homepage of our blog; some dating back to 2010. I checked our crawl stats in both Google and Bing’s Webmaster tool, and there are no duplicate content or 400 level errors being reporting from their crawl. My team is truly at a loss with trying to resolve this issue and any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Do the SEOmoz Campaign Reports follow Robots.txt?
Hello, Do the SEOmoz Campaign Reports (that track errors and warnings for a website) follow rules I write in the robots.txt file? I've done all that I can to fix the legitimate errors with my website, as reported by the fabulous SEOmoz tools. I want to clean up my pages indexed with the search engines so I've written a few rules to exclude content from Wordpress tag URLs for instance. Will my campaign report errors and warnings also drop as a result of this?

How to resolve Duplicate Content crawl errors for Magento Login Page
I am using the Magento shopping cart, and 99% of my duplicate content errors come from the login page. The URL looks like: http://www.site.com/customer/account/login/referer/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5tbW1zcGVjaW9zYS5jb20vcmV2aWV3L3Byb2R1Y3QvbGlzdC9pZC8xOTYvY2F0ZWdvcnkvNC8jcmV2aWV3LWZvcm0%2C/ Or, the same url but with the long string different from the one above. This link is available at the top of every page in my site, but I have made sure to add "rel=nofollow" as an attribute to the link in every case (it is done easily by modifying the header links template). Is there something else I should be doing? Do I need to try to add canonical to the login page? If so, does anyone know how to do it using XML?
