New site migration (multiple sites into one + new domain)
-
Hi,
I have read so many very helpful guides and experiences from you guys that will greatly help me but I have a few questions please.
Our company has 3 sites, the main site and 2 sites for different product ranges:
- BrandProductName.com (main site - DA = 22 raking well for product name)
- Productname2.com (DA = 10 ranking very well for product name and little competition)
- BrandProductName3.com (DA = 10 poor ranking)
We wish to bring all the sites into one with categories for the 3 different product. The main site is an e-commerece site whereas the other 2 are not (currently).
On top of this as the main domain has one of the product names in it they wish to change the domain to be just Brandname.com.
So the plan is to combine site 2 and 3 into site 1 and change that domain name. As you can imagine this is going to be quite a job. I am fairly happy with the steps required (having read all the guides and migrated many sites in the past) but with the added domain name change this is a little daunting.
So my questions are:
- Should I merge the 3 sites into 1 and then changed the domain at a later point?
- Should I change the domain of the main site first and then merge site 2 and 3 in later?
- Should I just do it all together?
Or based on the data i have provided do you disagree with the plan, what would you recommend?
We are not in a massive rush to complete all of this so we have the time to plan and execute this when we are fully ready.
Any help / advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all

I agree with James. Move them all into one carefully & methodically. Start with crawling all the sites and getting a good idea of how many pages you are dealing with & where they would 301 on the new site. Slow and steady amigo.
Good Luck!

Our new site will be using static site generator which is supposed to be better for SEO?
Hi folks, Our dev team is planning on building our new marketing webpages on SSG or Static Site Generator(we are stepping away from SSR). Based on my research this is something that can help our SEO in particular for site speed (our site has a poor score).

Site migration/ CMS/domain site structure change-no access to search console
Hi everyone, We are migrating an old site under a bigger umbrella (our main domain). As mentioned in the title, We'll perform CMS migration, domain change, and site structure change. Now, the major problem is that we can't get into google search console for the old site. The site still has old GA code, so google search console verification using this method is not possible, also there is no way developers will be able to add GTM or edit DNS setting (not to bother you with the reason why). Now, my dilemma is : 1. Do we need access to old search console to notify Google about the domain name change or this could be done from our main site (old site will become a part of) search console 2. We are setting up 301 redirects from old to the new domain (not perfect 1:1 redirect ). Once migration is done does anything else needs to be done with the old domain (it will become obsolete)? 3.The main site, Site-map... Should I create a new sitemap with newly added pages or update the current one. 4. if you have anything else please add:) Thank you!

Migrating to new Windows Server
Hello, We are migrating an existing website to a new Windows 2016 Server. Please advise or direct us to any good resources for advice on important configurations for the server primarily with respect to SEO. For example, is it important to ensure Pinging is enabled on server? Or are there good IIS add ons / features we should ensure we use, like URL rewrite? Thank you in advance for your response!

Site Migration and Traffic Help!
Hi Moz, I recently migrated my website with the help of an SEO company using 301 redirects. The reason for the move was to change our CMS from .aspx to Drupal/Wordpress. The homepage (www.shiftins.com) and the blog (www.shiftins.com/blog) were the only two pages that kept the same url. Everything else was redirected. It's been about two months since the redirects were completed and traffic has dropped off about 90%. I'm starting to worry that something was not done properly and my traffic may never return. The process for the redirects seem correct when I checked the work the SEO company did. All pages were duplicated, redirected to individual pages, then the old pages were de-indexed. Are there any insights the community can provide? Please help!

Subdomains vs. Subfolders vs. New Site
Hello geniuses!!! Here's my Friday puzzle: We have a plastic surgery client who already has a website that's performing fairly well and is driving in leads. She is going to be offering a highly specialized skincare program for cancer patients, and wants a new logo, new website and new promo materials all for this new skincare program. So here's the thing - my gut reaction says NO NEW WEBSITE! NO SUBDOMAIN! because of everything I've read about moving things on and off subdomains, etc (I just studied this: http://moz.com/blog/subdomains-vs-subfolders-rel-canonical-vs-301-how-to-structure-links-optimally-for-seo-whiteboard-friday). And, why wouldn't we want to use the authority of her current site, right? While she doesn't necessarily have a high authority domain - we're not talking WebMD, here - she does have some authority that we've built over time. But, because this is a pretty separate product from her general plastic surgery practice, what would you guys do? Since we'll be creating a logo and skincare "look and feel" for this product, and there will likely be a lot of information involved with it, I don't think we'll be able to just create one page. Is it smart to: a) build a separate site in a subfolder of her current site? (plasticsurgerypractice.com/skincare) b) build a subdomain? (skincare.plasticsurgerypractice.com) c) build her a new site (plasticsurgeryskincare.com)

Best way to transfer pagerank from one site to another
We currently own two sites (with unique domains) that accomplish a similar goal, but are completely different (so there's no duplicate content, etc) and were developed independently. Both sites have very good pagerank due to great press and inbound links over several years. Also both have thousands of pages and get a lot of inbound deep links. We plan on shutting one of the sites down so we can focus on the other. We'd like to transfer as much traffic and SEO/pagerank value from the one we're shutting down to the one we're continuing to focus on. What's the best way to do that? Should we just do a 301 redirect? Or keep the site running in some diminished form and link it to the site we're focusing on? I saw SEOmoz has a good guide on moving sites http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection which recommends a 301 redirect, but I wanted to see if the same applies when merging sites as we are in this case.

Multiple country site versions and hosting
If I intend to have 5 versions of an e-commerce site, one for each countries marketplace, would it be best to: a) Host each site in its own country b) Host all sites from 1 server/1 country I'm presuming that hosting in each country is better? But how quantifiable is this, and is it worth the extra hosting and management costs? Any advice gratefully received..
