I added an SSL certificate this morning and now I noticed duplicate content
-
Ok, so Im a newbie, therefor I make mistakes! Lots of them.
I added an SSL certificate this morning bc it was free and I read it can help my rankings. Now I just checked it in screaming frog and saw two duplicate content pages due to the https.
So im panicking! What's the easiest way to fix this?? Can I undue an SSL certificate?
I guess what's the easiest that will also be best for ranking.
Thank you!!

Since you are WordPress, install "Really Simple SSL" plugin https://really-simple-ssl.com/
You have a mixed content warning as well as the redirect problem. Really Simple SSL will fix that pretty painlessly. Worth the $25 for the premium version but the free version is also great.
Also looks like your host may be WP Engine? They can work with you to help as well.
I see the mixed content warning if I go directly to the page: https://intercallsystems.com/nurse-call-manufacturer/

Hi Brian, Im sorry to bug you. But if you don't mind... Im still confused and having a hard time wrapping my brain around this. This is what I do know.. when i type in intercallsystems.com it automatically goes to https://intercallsystems.com.
But if I type in any other page, like: http://intercallsystems.com/nursecallsystems/the-equinoxlegend-systems/ it doesnt automatically go.
Only the homepage does..
Also,
When I put my site through screaming frog I get duplicate title issues and duplicated H1 tags and what not for some pages like:
http://intercallsystems.com/nurse-call-manufacturer/
https://intercallsystems.com/nurse-call-manufacturer/
So do i need to redirect to http or do i need to do rel canonical?
This is what my current htaccess file looks like:BEGIN WordPress
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule>END WordPress

Thank you! Actually I suspected something was up bc it has more than usual down time. I wasn't sure what to do. Thanks

My pleasure, glad you were able to get that fixed rather quickly!
Yes, I would set up a new property in Search Console with the https version and resubmit the new sitemap and all that fun stuff. Then you can delete the old property to keep things neat.
One thing I want to mention, I noticed your site is on a shared hosting server with BlueHost. You may want to see about moving onto a dedicated server with them to play it safe. You run into malware issues and the possibility of the server being slowed down when loaded with sites like that. Run your site through this tool and you will see that there are several other sites that share the same IP address as your site. I am not sharing this to make you panic because there is no reason to, just so you are aware and can make an informed decision.

Here is an article on the topic that can help shed more light of the risks. I am super picky about where my sites are hosted and page speed so I always steer clear from shared hosting environments.

Thank you Brian,
It looks like my hosting provider automatically did it. when I go to the homepage it goes directly to https version and when I look at in Moz Bar I see:
|
HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
http://intercallsystems.com/ HTTP/1.1 200 OK
|
So now my new question is do I have to create a https version in webmaster tools, submit the sitemap, and do the data highlighter all over again?
Thank you for the help!

Sorry I just went back and read that you were a new to SEO! My apologies. Check this article out for more info on htaccess redirects.
-
Next task is 301 redirection as http to https.
-
Hey Rena!
I would just redirect that duplicate page to the new https version and call it a day!
Keep the SSL, just go through like you are and check to make sure everything is directing properly. You should be good to go. Hope this helps! Cheers

Duplicating relevant category content in subcategories. Good or bad for google ranking?
In a travel related page I have city categories with city related information.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
Would you recommend for or against duplicating some relevant city related in subcategory pages. For visitor it would be useful and google should have more context about the topic of our page.
But my main concern is how this may be perceived by google and especially whether it may make it more likely being penalized for thin content. We already were hit end of june by panda/phantom and we are working on adding also more unique content, but this would be something that we could do additionally and basically instantaneously. Just do not want to make things worse.0 -
Geo-Targeted Sub-Domains & Duplicate Content/Canonical
For background the sub domain structure here is inherited and commited to due to tech restrictions with some of our platforms. The brand I work with is splitting out their global site into regional sub sites (not too relevant but this is in order to display seasonal product in different hemispheres and to link to stores specific to the region). All sub-domains except EU will be geo-targeted to their relevant country. Regions and sub domains for reference: AU - Australia CA - Canada CH - Switzeraland EU - All Euro zone countries NZ - New Zealand US - United States This will be done with Wordpress multisite. The set up allows to publish content on one 'master' sub site and then decide which other sub sites to 'broadcast' to. Some content is specific to a sub-domain/region so no issue with duplicate and can set the sub-site version as canonical. However some content will appear on all sub-domains. au.example.com/awesome-content/ nz.example.com/awesome-content/ Now first question is since these domains are geo-targeted should I just have them all canonical to the version on that sub-domain? eg Or should I still signal the duplicate content with one canonical version? Essentially the top level example.com exists as a site only for publishing purposes - if a user lands on the top level example.com/awesome-content/ they are given a pop up to select region and redirected to the relevant sub-domain version. So I'm also unsure whether I want that content indexed at all?? I could make the top level example.com versions of all content be the canonical that all others point to eg. and rely on geo-targeting to have the right links show in the right search locations. I hope that's kind of clear?? Obviously I find it confusing and therefore hard to relay! Any feedback at all gratefully received. Cheers, Steve

Duplicate Internal Content on E-Commerce Website
Hi, I find my e-commerce pharmacy website is full of little snippets of duplicate content. In particular: -delivery info widget repeated on all the product pages -product category information repeated product pages (e.g. all medicines belonging to a certain category of medicines have identical side effects and I also include a generic snippet of the condition the medicine treats) Do you think it will harm my rankings to do this?

Tabs and duplicate content?
We own this site http://www.discountstickerprinting.co.uk/ and just a little concerned as I right clicked open in new tab on the tab content section and it went to a new page For example if you right click on the price tab and click open in new tab you will end up with the url

Opinion on Duplicate Content Scenario
So there are 2 pest control companies owned by the same person - Sovereign and Southern. (The two companies serve different markets) They have two different website URLs, but the website code is actually all the same....the code is hosted in one place....it just uses an if/else structure with dynamic php which determines whether the user sees the Sovereign site or the Southern site....know what I am saying? Here are the two sites: www.sovereignpestcontrol.com and www.southernpestcontrol.com. This is a duplicate content SEO nightmare, right?

Duplicate Content
Hi, So I have my great content (that contains a link to our site) that I want to distribute to high quality relevant sites in my niche as part of a link building campaign. Can I distribute this to lots of sites? The reason I ask is that those sites will then have duplicate content to all the other sites I distribute the content to won;t they? I this duplication bad for them and\or us? Thanks

Duplicate Page Title/Content Issues on Product Review Submission Pages
Hi Everyone, I'm very green to SEO. I have a Volusion-based storefront and recently decided to dedicate more time and effort into improving my online presence. Admittedly, I'm mostly a lurker in the Q&A forum but I couldn't find any pre-existing info regarding my situation. It could be out there. But again, I'm a noob... So, in my recent SEOmoz report I noticed that over 1,000 Duplicate Content Errors and Duplicate Page Title Errors have been found since my last crawl. I can see that every error is tied to a product in my inventory - specifically each product page has an option to write a review. It looks like the subsequent page where a visitor can fill out their review is the stem of the problem. All of my products are shown to have the same issue: Duplicate Page Title - Review:New Duplicate Page Content - the form is already partially filled out with the corresponding product My first question - It makes sense that a page containing a submission form would have the same title and content. But why is it being indexed, or crawled (or both for that matter) under every parameter in which it could be accessed (product A, B, C, etc)? My second question (an obvious one) - What can I do to begin to resolve this? As far as I know, I haven't touched this option included in Volusion other than to simply implement it. If I'm missing any key information, please point me in the right direction and I'll respond with any additional relevant information on my end. Many thanks in advance!
