More internal links pointing to internal page vs homepage
-
I was looking at our GSC internal links section and I saw that we have 901 internal links going to our compare rates form and 890 going to our homepage. At the end of most of our content I add a call to action to our compare rates form. Is this SEO friendly or should I have more pointing to the homepage and less pointing to our compare rates page?

Hi Lindsay
The quicker you can establish user intent and get them on that all-important journey the better. So personally I would provide them with either a search bar or a multiple choice box to get them interacting straight away. This would dramatically improve your bounce rate.
Best of luck,

Thank you! Yes, all of your suggestions are on my Q1 goals for neat year. I didn't build the website, a designer did. We're going to use Google Optimize for A & B testing of the homepage call to action. I definitely want to add a short form to the homepage to see how it converts. We're also moving our website off of WP Engine and onto Site Ground to start our overall speeding up of the website. We have a lot of cleaning up to do next year, speed is our priority. Also going to install AMP.

Does the number of links to the number of words in a post do not work?
-
Hi Lindsay
If these are internal links then I would not be concerned as Google takes far more notice of external links. The number you quote is partly a metric of how your site is structured and partly an indication of how important the page is, and for me, the 'compare rates' page satisfies user intent far greater than any other page on your website.
I would even consider bringing the whole Get A Quote >Compare Rates section to the home page as this is clearly where the site can earn its money, so is to be the most important page on your website.
I actually had to dig around a bit to find Get A Quote - To you, it seems obvious as it's on the top bar but for me, I had to flick around a bit to find it.
If a user were confronted with a highly visible section where they had to enter their sex and DOB then this would increase the interaction with the home page, cause less pogo sticking (jumping back to Google for alternatives) and lower the whole site's bounce rate.
I would also address the problem of the slow site load as well - the background comes up quickly but the content takes a few seconds.

How would you build links to this page?
Hi i have ecommerce store and currently we are looking to build links to category pages like: http://www.theiconic.com.au/womens-clothing-dresses-party-dresses/ What are some natural ways to build links to a page like this? Our SEO agency has done guest posting and forums but these are not natural link building methods and against Google policy. Any suggestions on how to build natural links to these pages? Cheers.

Rankings rise after improving internal linking - then drop again
I'm working on a large scale publishing site. I can increase search rankings almost immediately by improving internal linking to targeted pages, sometimes by 40 positions but after a day or two these same rankings drop down again, not always as low as before but significantly lower than their highest position. My theory is that the uplift generated by the internal linking is subsequently mitigated by other algorithmic factors relating to content quality or site performance or is this unlikely? Does anyone else have experience of this phenomenon or any theories?

Internal Linking
Hi I've been looking over my pages and it says for this page for example http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/1-6kw-halogen-heater I have too many links, I think it was about 178. These links are from the menu and bottom of the page - how much of an issue is this for internal linking structure? I wouldn't want to remove the menus or change them too much. Thank you!

Links on page
Hi I have a web page which lists about 50-60 products which links out to either a pdf on the product or the main manufacturers website page containing product detail. The site in non e-commerce is this the site/page likely to get hit by Penguin? Would it be best to create a separate page for the product/manufacturer group i.e 5 or 6 pages but linking out to the PDFs etc...?

Any downsides of (permanent)redirecting 404 pages to more generic pages(category page)
Hi, We have a site which is somewhat like e-bay, they have several categories and advertisements posted by customers/ client. These advertisements disappear over time and turn into 404 pages. We have the option to redirect the user to the corresponding category page, but we're afraid of any negative impact of this change. Are there any downsides, and is this really the best option we have? Thanks in advance!

Link + noindex vs canonical--which is better?
In this article http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66359 google mentions if you syndicate content, you should include a link and, ideally noindex, the content, if possible. I'm wondering why google doesn't mention including a canonical instead the link + noindex? Is one better than the other? Any ideas?

How do I reduce internal links & cannibalisation from primiary navigation?
SEOmoz tools is reporting each page on our site containing in excess of 200 internal links mostly from our primary navigation menu which it says is too many. This also causes cannibalization on the word towels which i would like to avoid if possible. Is there a way to reduce the number of internal links whilst maintaining a good structure to allow link juice to filter through the site and also reduce cannibalization?
