Http:// vs Https:// in Og:URL
-
Hi,
Recently, we have migrated our website from http:// to https://. Now, every URL is in https:// and we have used 301 permanent redirection for redirecting OLD URL's to New Ones.
We have planned to include http:// link in og:url instead of https:// due to some social share issues we are facing. My concern is, if Google finds the self http:// URL on every page of my blog, will Google gets confused with http and https:// as we are providing the old URL to Google for crawling.
Please advice.
Thanks

Shareaholic and Social Warfare (paid) plugins are the ones I'm familiar with, Sameer. There is also a paid add-on for Sassy Social Share plugin that will accomplish this too. Others may have also added this capability.

Thanks for sharing the informative answers. @ThompsonPaul Which Wordpress Plugin we can use to save the Facebook share count?
-
Yea, this is a stupid screwup by Facebook because they won't fix their system to simply recognise the HTTP and HTTPS URLs are the same. (Others like Google+ got this figured out ages ago.)
Mentioning the HTTP URL for your OG data won't do any harm. It's the same as all the other websites out there with previous links still pointing to your old HTTP address. The 301-redirect and the hew HTTPS sitemap will give crawlers overwhelming directive of the correct URLs to index. (And in fact, the OG URL isn't even technically a link, so crawlers likely aren't even following it.)
As Martijn says though - you're kind of in limbo. The pages will show the old counts, but won't be aggregating the new counts. There are some plugins for WordPress that purport to be able to combine both, but I haven't used one yet.

What I'm guessing is that Sameer has a significant amount of URLs that have a ton of shares. So some numbers around social share counts might be off due to that. Anyway, what you could evaluate is if you can change the OG urls for only new articles. In the end HTTPS is also the new reality for you, so you might just best suck it up and change it to HTTPS. Likely the impact will be low.

I think you probably know what I am going to say!
If you put the HTTP version of the URL you are sending out conflicting signs to Google by telling them that both pages exist. By sharing the HTTP links on Socials you are also creating needles redirects. There is conjecture, still, as to whether 301 causes any loss of link juice, but personally I'm with Rand Fishkin, that there will be a small loss of link juice suffered by having a redirect in place (Others - this is not the place to argue about this!), so I would make it as clear as possible without any HTTP mentions on the page whatsoever.
I'm not sure what you mean about 'social share issues' but maybe I can help? what are they?
Any SEO audit software will tell you the same - if you move to HTTPS then use the correct URL otherwise the software will scream with warnings.
Regards
Nigel

SEO advice on ecommerce url structure where categories contain "/c/"

https://www.granngarden.se/Sortiment/Husdjur/Hund/Hundfoder-%26-Hundmat/c/hundfoder To either: a.
https://www.granngarden.se/husdjur/hund/hundfoder/c/hundfoder b.
https://www.granngarden.se/husdjur/hund/c/hundfoder (hundfoder means dogfood) The question is whether we should keep the duplicated category name (hundfoder) before the "/c/" or not. Will there be SEO disadvantages by removing the duplicate "hundfoder" before the "/c/"? I prefer the shorter version ofc, but do not want to jeopardize any SEO rankings or send confusing signals to search engines or customers due to the "/c/" breaking up the url breadcrumb. What do you guys say and prefer from the above alternatives? Thanks /Hampus0 -
Our homepage url has been 301'd to the new https version - as our MD wanted us to have the secure protocol
Hello Mozers I'm just checking whether it is good practice to 301 the main homepage url to its https version. Will this have any detrimental effect on ranking and DA?

Stuck with canonical URL - main site vs categorys?
Hello, I started to doubt myself. We have a classified advertisements website. On the main www.website.com page, almost all the advertisements are shown. Now we take those advertisements and also split them into categorys Category 1 / category 2 / category 3 / category 4 Now all those categories almost always have the same content as www.website.com except a bit less (because X amount of content is now divided also to 4-5 groups) For raking should i actually tell google that those categories are a copy of www.website.com or they should still be as they are?

New URL Structure
Hi Guy's, For our webshop we're considering a new URL structure because longtail keywords to rank so well. Now we have /category (main focus keywords)
Technical SEO | | Happy-SEO
/product/the-product345897345123/ (nice to rank on, not that much volume) We have over 500 categories and every one of them is placed after our domain. Because i think it's better to work with a good structure and managed a way to make categories and sub-categories. The 500 categories may be the case why not every one of them is ranking so well, so that was also the choice of thinking about a new structure. So the new URL structure will be: /category (main focus keywords)
/category/subcat/ (also main focus keywords) Everything will be redirect (301, good way), so i think there won't be to much problems. I'm thinking about what to do with the /product/ URL. Because now it will be on the same level as the subcategories, and i'm affraid that when it's on that level, Google will give the same value to both of them. My options that i'm considering are: **Old way **
/product/the-product-345897345123/ .html (seen this on big webshops)
/product/the-product-345897345123.html/ Level deeper SKU /product/the-product/345897345123/ What would you suggest? The new structure would be 20 categories 500+ sub's devided under main categories 5000+ products Thanks!0 -
Bigcommerce only allows us to have https for our store only, not the other pages on our site, so we have a mix of https and http, how is this hurting us and what's the best way to fix?
So we aren't interested in paying a thousand dollars a month just to have https when we feel it's the only selling point of that package, so we have https for our store and the rest of the site blogs and all are http. I'm wondering if this would count as duplicate content or give us some other unforeseen penalty due to the half way approach of https being implemented. If this is hurting us, what would you recommend as a solution?

HTTPS vs HTTP
A few months ago we switched all product page urls in our e-commerce site to https: Recently working on the site I was appalled at how slow our pages were loading and on investigating further with our hosting partner they advised to switch back to http instead of https for all of the site content to help page speed. We obviously still need to use https in the cart and check-out. I think that that Google will be pushing all commerce web pages to https but for now I need to improve page load speed. Will the switch back from https to http impair our keywords? https://www.silverandpewtergifts.com/

Does having a page (or site) available on HTTP and HTTPS cause duplication issues?
Say I've got a site that can be accessed using either protocal (i.e. HTTP and HTTPS), but most (if not all of the links) are pointing to the HTTP versions. Will it cause a problem if I start link building to HTTPS versions? In other words does google see http://mysite.com as the same page as https://mysite.com? Thanks
